Then the Red Death happens and any danger at all afterwards he takes in stride and handles with a certain levelheadedness expected from someone who's been in a deathmatch with a dragon the size of an island at the young age of 15 in order to save his father and tribe.

He still worries when his friends are in danger (a lot) and it's not like he doesn't run from danger when it's required, but it's not the same as during or before Httyd 1.

The adults will probably be a lot more tense than the next generation for at least another many years or so because they’re so used to things going wrong just when things are going right. They’ll hold onto the trauma of constantly wondering if another friend or family member is going to die like that’s normal, something their kids will never feel.

There was such a balance, a chemistry, loyalty, and the biggest support coming from Astrid. And Hiccup clearly adores her. Gods, you could almost touch their love through the screen.

1. A war with dragons up until they were 15 2. A war with Alvin and Dagur over dragons when they were 16 3. A war with dragon hunters to stop them from killing dragons when they were 18 4. A mini-war with Drago who had a dragon kill Hiccup’s father-the chief of their island-when they were 20 5. Another mini-war with Grimmle and his guys who wanted to use dragons to take of the world when they were 21/Fighting Dragon Hunters every few days who wanted to kill dragons

Well I mean the first ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ is almost 12 years old so yeah..,

Stands frozen as mental crisis takes over 

Because it showed that Hiccup still has some lingering self esteem issues.

That his confidence is growing but easily cracked.  And that he STILL has an intense NEED to prove himself.  He refuses to let what he’s found slip away.  So much that this caused him to risk his life.  Hiccup tends to make stupid decisions when its his reputation on the line.  Even Stoick is well aware of this as evidenced by the finale.  Hiccup gives in to taunting.  He has a bit of a pride complex, that spawned from his need to prove himself.

I LIKE that the writers have an ongoing flaw for him.  It gets him into trouble.  He became increasingly arrogant, to the point that even Snotlout was like WOW REALLY HICCUP.  And in the end, it got him into some DEEP DOO DOO. Alvin even used it against him, he knew it would work.  Hic gets his mind set on something, and gets excited, or determined to prove a point, and he either forgets to weigh the danger, or dismisses it as “I can handle it!” Maybe you would, too, if you defeated something like the Red Death.  But he’s figuring out that not every long shot plan is going to go off without a hitch.  That’s why they’re called long shots.  He is learning, he is still a kid, he is not perfect. 

Just wanted to show this great moment between Snotlout and Hiccup as the former decides, without a single complaint, to help out a friend and find him a new leg.

I like that Snotlout decides to help Hiccup out without even batting an eye. I like that he does it in a humorous and typical way for him while still showing that he’s genuinely trying to help a guy out.

There is no useless taunting banter, no sarcasm, no other Snotlout-y things he probably would have said if this were to have taken place in the past, just Snot immediately finding a solution for Hiccup’s problem, getting to solving it without wasting time, and not immediately asking for something in return.

I like that he actually did pick out a left leg for Hiccup to use too. And one that fits!

The dialogue was also quite whimsical.

Hiccup: *babbling nonsense*

Momma Snotlout: Hush you!

And then there is that little victory smirk after he attaches the bone leg. Such a Snotface…face.

But most of all, I love how, when Hiccup stands up to test out his spoopy new leg, Snotlout actually stays kneeled and checks to make sure this is an okay solution for Hiccup, not smiling or smirking or anything. Just waiting and seeing if Hicc can stand like this.

I just really love this moment, I really do. It is the Hiccup and Snotlout that I will never forget. We can basically see, in just this moment alone, how much Snotlout has grown in Race to the Edge.

Snotlout! Snotlout! Oi! Oi! Oi! (Snotlout bonus)

Snotlout knows how Hiccup’s prosthetic works and has, judging by how fast he worked, done this at least once before. Otherwise this would’ve been done a lot more clumsily and definitely not as fast as Snotlout has worked here.

Snotlout: “Thank you, dead body.” Hiccup: “I guess I can live with that.”
