(I think he was in like 5 different Ska bands)
If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.

made this into a gif bc i liked it so much. shark Denied
I still think it’s funny as hell that while LWJ was like “I just want to find either his body or his spirit so I can put him to rest and maybe talk to him one last time,” Jiang Cheng was like “I KNOW that motherfucker is alive I KNOW it I KNOW he’s out there doing his Wei Wuxian BULLSHIT. Like hell he’s dead!!! This is Wei Wuxian we’re talking about!!”
i have this headcanon that, when they were looking for wei wuxian during the war (the only time they could ever stand each others’ company!!!), it was actually the reverse. like, they were both stubbornly insisting that They Will Find Him, but deep down Jiang Cheng is kinda sure what they find is going to be his remains - which he is still determined to find because dammit he is not leaving his brother to rot out there!! but like, he’s already halfway to thinking of yanli as “my only surviving family,” he’s halfway to referring to wwx in the past tense, and lwj keeps glaring at him whenever he says “wei wuxian was -” because nope he does not accept this. lan wangji is not used to not getting what he puts his mind to! lan wangji, at this point, had his own brother go missing-presumed-dead and then show up again to lead an army and be okay! lan wangji is going to find wei wuxian and he is going to be alive when he does and that’s all there is to it!
and frankly, lan wangji’s willingness to believe that wei wuxian is Gone with a capital-G after his fall hits jiang cheng as a kind of betrayal. as the only other person who knows wwx was not stabbed, that he was still alive when he fell, jiang cheng feels that lan wangji should be on board the “he’s definitely not dead” train - but of course he can’t get up in lwj’s face and demand to know why he’s not, because they are very much Not Talking about who did or did not stab which other people that day.
#because LWJ has worked out his feelings as horrible as they are at this point. #he understands very clearly that he loved wwx and he failed him and the only thing left to do #is live with that and try to be the kind of person who would have made different choices. #JC needs WWX to be alive so they can finish their argument (via @henshengs)
it kills me how fucking gentle ilya is with his father when he can't remember things. like, that man treated ilya like dogshit, he was cruel and abusive and made ilya and his mother miserable for years. Yet when his father is sick, ilya is kind. he is gentle to the man who never was with him.
I don’t think we talk enough about how, despite the presence of multiple globes, PotC takes place on a flat earth, ice wall included.
I'm gonna need some elaboration here
They literally sail over the edge of it after passing through a hole in a wall of ice. They fall off. They get back to the other side by passing through the whole ocean.
But also there’s a globe on, like, everyone’s desk.
#it's like lord of the rings#it's only flat for pirates
You get it.
No, but this is actually (sort of) canon.
See, part of the conceit of the PotC trilogy is that all myths are true. Nearly every supernatural element in the franchise has a root in some real world mythology or pirate lore, although some of them are mashed together.
Another thing is that they take place at the end of the Golden Age of Piracy, and the more the map gets filled in, and the more the Royal Navy takes power, there less room there is for the mystical and supernatural in the world. This is explicitly called out in At World's End with the death of the kraken:
Barbossa: The world used to be a bigger place. Jack: The world's still the same. There's just... less in it.
The only way to access the world of the supernatural is through the supernatural itself. You can only get to the Isla de Muerta with Jack's compass that points to whatever you desire, or if you already know where its is. You need Tia Dalma's map to find the edge of the world. To access the supernatural, you need to already be immersed in it.
The pirates world isn't flat, it's round - but because the edge of the world exists in myth, it therefore exists in reality. The pirates are able to find it through supernatural means, but if, say, someone like Norrington just sailed in the same general direction, he wouldn't end up in the same place.
“Pirate” is a mage subclass fueled by word of mouth, rule of cool, The Power of Belief/Love/Friendship, and rum.
If you look at it in a particular way, the Pirates specifically function by FAIRY RULES: obscure codes of law and formality that they are irrevocably bound to abide by...except when you get the wording wrong.
When we go to Tortuga (or any pirate controlled space) we leave behind the sensibilities of the real world and enter this bizarre perpetual revel of debauchery and violence that could never sustain itself in a world bound by sense.
That makes Jack our Puck character, a trickster of tricksters who can invert your fortunes just by letting him talk to you.
It also makes Will into a changeling, born of the fairyworld, adopted by mortals, and fated to return to it in what makes for a doomed love story. Hell, one might say that the reason Will's swords are SO GOOD is because they contain an element of myth about them: they're the IDEA of swords, true to how they would be in myth.

Never in my life have I considered drawing “One Piece” fanart but that live action was so much fun, it got me hooked
Wei Wuxian's first meeting with teenage Jin Ling just gets funnier every time. Especially because, by this point, he should have a rough idea of how long it's been since he died, and he immediately recognizes Jin Ling as a member of the Jin Sect, clearly an important one if he's bossing other people around and spending absurd amounts of money on spiritual nets. If Wei Wuxian had spent A SINGLE MINUTE actively trying to guess this kid's identity, he probably could have worked out that this kid has a high chance of being his nephew.
But Wei Wuxian does not take the time (thirty seconds! WWX, you could have made an educated guess!) to figure out this kid's specific identity! He's just been wrestling with an incredibly stubborn donkey all day and he's probably hangry again because they had to share an apple. He just thinks to himself, "Wow, this Jin kid is a real spoiled brat," and goes from there!
"Didn't your mother ever teach you any manners?" he says obliviously to JIN LING, his own fucking nephew. When Jin Ling is FAMOUSLY ORPHANED. Like, you could go up to literally anyone on the street and be like, "What happened to that rich kid Jin Ling's parents?" and they would immediately tell you, "Oh, the evil Yiling Patriarch killed them, evilly." Very high chance that no one has ever said anything like this to Jin Ling - extremely rich young master, most famous orphan in the cultivation world, in possession of some very scary uncles - before.
And from Jin Ling's perspective, this outrageous comment is coming from his OWN UNCLE, Mo Xuanyu, his late grandfather's bastard son who was kicked out of the sect for being gay and crazy. There is NO WAY that Mo Xuanyu could somehow not know that Jin Ling has no parents, so of course, this has to be an intentional low-blow insult bringing up and disparaging his dead mother. So, of course this brat tries to start a fight! Mo Xuanyu started it with words like that!
And then Wei Wuxian trips him and essentially sits on him (using a talisman), there's the whole "My uncle is going to kill you!" & "Who's your uncle?" exchange, and Jiang Cheng immediately interrupts them. And Wei Wuxian has to do the sudden, incredibly simple, damning mental calculation of: "Jin kid + Jiang Cheng for an uncle = Oh, fuck."
It's funny every single time.
#its hard to make extremely sad concepts funny#but mdzs does it by making them happen to wwx - by @withthewerewolves
first of all, this is very funny and you know i enjoy lan wangji and wen ning joining forces behind wei wuxian's back. second of all, isn't it curious how often wei wuxian and wen ning lean into this joke? we know wei wuxian dislikes being called "the yiling patriarch" and considers "the ghost general" moniker ill-fitting and stupid; we know wen ning is uncomfortable with it when lan sizhui notices and switches to a different address. yet with each other, they are willing to reference or roleplay their "characters"? me & you when society dehumanizes us and casts us to play monstrous caricatures of ourselves in their morality tale about hubris and karmic punishment, and we can't escape the narrative or prove them wrong, so we might as well commit to the bit.
and i say Both, because while wei wuxian gets back into character straight from his "you've got nerve, daring to kick me, the patriarch" awakening and is often side-eyed for treating wen ning as his servant / thrall / thing (consciously or subconsciously or tongue-in-cheek #mylivingweapon), wen ning is very much doing it back. wen ning kneels first when they meet. wen ning has infinite options to choose from when he decides to rescue wangxian from their haystack predicament, but he chooses to scare the peasant family as a violent fierce corpse because that's what he is to them anyway. he's afraid he's not quite scary enough to match their expectations so he covers himself in dirt to be a better boogeyman. and wei wuxian pisses himself laughing and compliments his mighty and powerful roar. later wei wuxian throws his sword to wen ning without turning around as if wen ning's readiness to be his weapon should be implicit; wen ning catches it immediately. they do it to troll a bunch of children. there's a moment during the blood pool cave fight when wei wuxian shouts at wen ning to throw the kids outside, and wen ning replies "yes, sir 🫡", like he's literally doing the bit, a general receiving an order from the patriarch. they're both insane. and doylistically i suspect that mxtx just can't resist poking fun at their dynamic on a meta level and it probably aint that deep, but watsonially it's a whole other can of worms. they get to act like they're characters in a story because they are! in-universe! and their story sucks!! "the supreme evil yiling patriarch and his mad dog, the ghost general" has to be their inside joke, it has to be a joke or it'll be too depressing to live with.

having anxiety is like being given permanent unwanted custody of a halter arabian. like okay buddy is it panic time again. cool you probably need more exercise and an apple and then maybe you'll calm down.
taking my stupid walks for my stupid mental health with my stupid hypervigilant brain horse
thoroughly enjoying the notes on this post because it's equal parts people with anxiety going "yeah that's what it's like" and people with arabians going "yeah that's what they're like"
