Freak on Virgin crime
It's not lost on me that Dol-makjar is a historically orcish city and yet has a governing body consisting entirely of humans. How the hallowed round, the very site of so much orcish suffering, is mearly on a lease to Hal from the sundered houses, trying to corrupt and shape the stories they share there.
a reminder for everyone, since one of the toughest things about writing posts about CritRole campaigns is checking when and what specifically happened, but there's tools to quickly search transcripts for all episodes so far.
there's a transcript search by Stuart Langridge. allows for filtering by speaker, shows each instance as its own result, and has timestamps to videos.
I prefer the Langridge search, but if you're having trouble with the search result limit on it, you can search the transcripts on Encyclopedia Exandria. hosting them in their own namespace allows for limiting search terms to transcripts only, and results can be filtered further down using categories (example searching for "Lana Strossa" in "Campaign 4 transcripts"). downside is it does not show each instance within an episode, only brings up each episode once, and has no timestamps, but it doesn't have a limit on the number of results and it includes transcripts for more one-shots than Langridge covers.
Thoughts on the Tachonis family abuse.
One thing I love that Brennan has been doing so far in campaign 4 is showing the effects of an abusive parent with Primus and his kids. Obviously Occtis is the family scapegoat and gets the majority of it, but all of Primus’ children are messed up and most of the family are terrified of him.
Petra’s and Raya: have no concept of healthy relationships and are so psycho-sexually trauma bonded with each other they want to be sister wives and kill all their fiancé’s as foreplay. They also expressed feeling disillusioned towards their father in letters but show deference to him in person.
Koral: what little we saw of him wasn’t great. He was chained to a bed and under the effects of a much deserved dancing spell, but even the fact that this powerful sundered house chained him up instead of finding a way to break the curse is wild to me. Everyone is expendable, and you only last as long as you’re of use.
Kid number 4: Nothing yet.
Frons: gone too soon to get info, but I’m hoping he makes a reappearance.
Ethrand: boy there’s a lot to unpack with him. Starting with the fact that he is absolutely terrified of his father. He was shaking after ripping out Occtis’ heart and being called by his father, cowering at the mansion while Primus yelled at him, visibly guilty when Occtis’ death was mentioned, and nauseous when his father killed Hannan. Out of all the Tachonis kids that might turn to the magpie’s side, I have a feeling that Ethrand might be it. He seems just one mistake away from becoming the next family scapegoat, and I feel that all of his motivations so far have been to avoid that no matter what. His redemption arc would be incredible for sure.
Kid 7: I’m most interested in this Tachonis kid. They are the closest in age to Occtis and Ethrand, they are the child born right before the one without sorcerous ability, and while we’ve seen flashbacks of Ethrand and Occtis, I find it very interesting we haven’t seen any hints of his next oldest sibling.
Occtis: obviously we have the most evidence for abuse effects on our sweet undead wizard, but it’s heartbreaking just how much Occtis tried to prove himself and earn his father’s love despite literally being cast aside and sacrificed. I would love to see how Occtis deals with recognizing the ways his siblings were abused in comparison to him.
Honorable mentions: Trimus ( got choked by her scary ass big brother), Tertia ( poor baby sacrificed herself to be useful to her uncle and dad), random Tachonis attendant Primus had Wic kill.
All in all, Primus’ leadership of his family, and maybe his father’s before him, have created dysfunctional and messed up kids. Even if the abuse wasn’t as overt as with Occtis, the entire family system is affected. We’re seeing a breakdown of an acceptable hierarchy of abuse where the brunt of Primus’ ire was directed at Occtis; now that his plan is falling apart, I’m interested to see what other cracks appear in all of the Tachonis family members.
Portrait of a Shadowhand ✨
(I.d.: a realistic digital vector portrait of Essek Thelyss in shades of purple against a backdrop of stars and constellations. Essek is a drow elf with coily hair worn in an undercut and lots of gold earrings. End I.d.)

et tu brute?
The thing about the "all evil fictional women from myth and legend are misunderstood and in reality their story was retold to make them evil because men were afraid of their power" trend is that it's low-key also misogynistic to assume women are incapable of being terrible people purely due to being women.
