new story alert!
It finally occurred to me to share my latest work here. 😆 This is not a new fic to me, but I've been sitting on it for a couple years and finally got around to posting. It's set during Star Wars, TCW era, and features my OC Jedi baddie, Kalinda Halcyon, and the gooey marshmallow trapped by plastoid armor, OC clone Captain Stonewall. Plus, approximately a million other OCs with the occasional canon character sprinkled in for flavor. I also had a fun Republic Commando detour about half way into the fic, so eventually you'll see some of those characters stumble through. 😘 Here's a snippet:
The bacta bay was silent now. Stonewall entered the vast room, lit by the rows of bubbling tanks, each with a figure suspended within the pale-blue liquid. The clone captain’s leg ached a little, but the painkillers were doing their job, though his steps were slower than he liked.
Which seemed to be the theme of the day. He tried to ignore that thought, at least right now. He could brood anytime, but right now he had to find his men — and his general. She hadn’t said she’d be here, but Stonewall knew her habits.
Only a few medics were at work in the bacta bay now; most of the others were in the medbay proper, tending to the troopers who hadn’t warranted a tanking. The sickly-sweet scent of bacta hung in the air, sticking to the inside of Stonewall’s nose, and he almost replaced his bucket. Instead, he swept his gaze over each tank, noting the clone trooper held within. None of them were who he searched for. He continued down the rows.
As he went, he tried to focus on his Jedi general. Kali?
The silent call wavered in the void. Stonewall was obviously no Jedi and could not feel her presence the way she could his, but they were able to speak in this silent way. Apparently, Kali had spoken to others she…cared about, deeply, with this mind-speech, which made Stonewall feel a lot of different ways. It’d started months ago, during a mission to Florrum. By now, Stonewall had almost gotten used to the sensation of hearing his Jedi’s voice in his mind.
But she wasn’t answering now. The thought made his pace quicken and he tried again. Kali? Are you here?
You’re getting warmer, she replied, and he exhaled in relief, though it was short-lived. Though she spoke like the wry woman he knew, there was a frayed edge to the words, like she was barely holding herself together.
He paused to peer down the nearest row, then moved forward.
Colder, she sent. Turn left, then look right.
He did, and spotted her at once: a slight, dark-haired Human woman standing between two bacta tanks on the end of this row. Stonewall’s pace quickened as he met her, and he grimaced over the imbalance in his gait. Along with the myriad of cuts, scrapes, and burns he’d sustained on Gandowyne, he’d taken a blaster-bolt to his upper thigh. Bacta had worked wonders, but he’d have a limp for the next few days, at least.
Well, there were worse things.

The council told Anakin what he needed to hear. Palpatine told him what he wanted to hear. That's why Anakin chose Palpatine, not because the council was "too mean."
Honestly I do gotta say, they make good points here.

To anyone who believes fairy tale romances never happen in real life, may I remind you that JRR and Edith Tolkien met and experienced a forbidden love in their youth, and then were separated for five whole years because of his guardian’s rules that he could not date till he was 21, and she got engaged to someone else only because she assumed he’d forgotten her and lost hope that she could ever be with him, but then on his 21st birthday, he wrote her a letter saying he still loved her and wanted to marry her, she responded basically saying ‘if I’d known you hadn’t left me on the shelf, I would never have said yes to anyone else,’ then a week later she greeted him at the train station and then immediately dumped her fiancé, and they got married and she converted to his religion and danced for him in a flowering field far away from the trenches into which he was drafted, which left such an impression that he crafted an entire story about the most beautiful maiden in the world who danced in the woods and made enormous sacrifices to be with the man she loved, and they had four kids and remained faithful to each other and blissfully grew old together and their gravestones are now marked with the names of that same fictional couple that he created, who broke every rule and overcame every possible obstacle to be together and get a happy ending, who only did all that because he based it all on their own real love story.
Knowing all this has always made this bit of Beren’s song instantly reduce me to tears:
Though all to ruin fell the world
and were dissolved and backward hurled
unmade into the old abyss,
yet were its making good, for this—
the dawn, the dusk, the earth, the sea—
that Lúthien on a time should be!
Tolkien straight up wrote a poem that said “the world could end, but it wouldn’t have all been pointless, because she was in this world, however briefly, and that justified all the rest.” Kills me.
Who can outdo Wife Guy Tolkien? Dude was writing elaborate AUs where his wife is an impossibly beautiful magic-wielding immortal elf princess who fights Satan and wins to rescue her human boyfriend from Satan’s doom fortress. Flawless.
Final note: while they were dating, a favorite activity was to go to a local cafe with a balcony and throw sugar cubes into people's hats.
you ever think about the fact that mrs. ryland, mrs. eddleton, and mrs. van sicklen probably went to school with lydia?
well, maybe not—there's certainly the chance that they all didn't grow up in mount bedford. but considering the fact that they all have children samantha's age (sure, clarisse isn't confirmed to be mrs. van sicklen's daughter, but it is very likely), it goes to reckon that, if they have spent their entire lives in the town, they should be very close in age to lydia.
this is interesting in and of itself to me, but i also think it's also interesting to think about this in relation to grandmary. i've already gone on at length about grandmary and grief, so let's keep this post a little lighter: how absurd must it be for her to have to now socialize with women that she once knew as her daughter's schoolmates or friends?
i also think, if we're running with this theory, it offers a really good explanation about the social weight that grandmary throws around during the series. of course she's able to get mrs. van sicklen to offer jobs to nellie's entire family—she's known that women since she was in diapers. of course she’s able to talk back to them all when they’re scandalized about samantha’s friendship with nellie—what are they going to do, go up against a women that hosted them for birthday parties? nah, grandmary probably has sooo much dirt on them, and that in turn gives samantha social leverage that she’s not even aware of.
this is a detail that i actually didn't notice until this year, but i ADORE the fact that dan andreason's portrait of sam has her bow just a little bit crooked
like yes! that's sam as we meet her! she is trying her best to fulfill all the expectations that are set for her, but she already is feeling like she's not going to be able to be the proper young lady that grandmary wants her to be. she's trying so hard--her bow is neat but crooked--and she's about to learn that sometimes doing the right thing means following your heart rather than the rules
anyways. should we talk about the fact that sam's portrait for raquel's book misses this detail orrrrrr
it's almost like they have completely lost sight of what samantha is all about
Happy May the Fourth! I added a second page to this comic from last year!
Nasty and sophisticated scam: BEWARE of this!

OBI-WAN KENOBI (2022): Part III
The very best thing about The Phantom of the Opera is that it shows us a possibly supernatural occurrence, then gives us a natural explanation that is infinitely crazier than the supernatural one would have been.
What if there was a ghost in the opera house that was killing people?
Requires you to accept the existence of ghosts, but otherwise is a straightforward story.
What if the chief contractor who built the opera house was a deformed circus freak who used his experience building palaces and torture chambers for sultans to keep building secret passageways and torture chambers in the basement when construction halted during the Franco-Prussian War, and then kept living down there working on an opera and killing and blackmailing people who crossed him and also training a pretty opera singer that he wants to marry?
There is nothing in the world that could have prepared me to expect even half of that.
@o-lei-o-lai-o-lord you are so right about this
Honestly, this explains so much about Christine's perspective too when you think about it.
My father sent me a guardian angel from Heaven to guide and comfort me in his absence: "Okay, not something that happens every day, but that is what guardian angels are supposed to do and Dad did indicate something like this would happen."
A hideously disfigured renaissance man, having all the natural skills and education to build himself a secret villain lair in a public building, extort enormous amounts of money from its management, and convince everyone he's a ghost, has developed a massive crush on me and has decided to express that through manipulation, kidnapping, and murder: "I cannot even begin to tell you how much this was not on my Bingo card."
Well then.
a couple of people on that last post are like 'i had to stop when i reached the point where i didnt know what was going on' and i always legit forget that insane shit happening that the audience can't understand yet is gonna be a turnoff for a lot of people. i have a real "lets see where the dog is going with this one" ethos in how i approach media and it has been nothing but a boon. how do you ever expect to find something that really blows you away if you tap out as soon as you're in uncharted territory.
I tend to also want to see things thru to the bitter end but sometimes you just hit a point where you’re like, “ehhhhhh I think I’m good.” There’s no hard and fast method to it, at least not for me. It’s more of a, “I know it when I see it” vibe.
thinking about how obi-wan probably always thought, always hoped, that eventually the war would end and if, force-willing, they survived, he and anakin could just be regular jedi together in a time of peace.
that the tension and grief and anger of anakin’s padawan years would settle (anakin had grown into a jedi obi-wan was incredibly, terribly proud of, after all) and when they no longer had to be generals, they would go on missions together, normal missions where they would negotiate treaties and investigate minor problems off-world and weren’t locked into endless, bloody battle.
that his grand-padawan would be knighted, the padawan he and anakin had trained together, that she would maybe take a padawan on her own someday and his lineage would continue, healing over the broken branches of dooku and qui-gon.
and this, growing old with anakin, leading a normal jedi life with him by obi-wan’s side, living at the temple and eating in the refectory and teaching the initiates, would be obi-wan’s reward for all his grief, all his pain, all he had sacrificed for the order. a humble reward, he would never ask for more, just a simple life with the only family he had ever imagined himself having, the life anakin and ahsoka deserved but hadn’t seen since the start of the war.
and then none of those things happened because of terrible machinations that had been in place, unseen, for decades inside which they were all just pawns on a playing board to be moved and sacrificed in meaningless cruelty
all the tears :(
My personal metric for fandom has always been this: If more than half of my time in a given space is complaining about the bullshit I'm subjecting myself to in said space, I'm out of there. I don't care if it's legitimate reasons for being angry about shit I see or if it's dumbass reasons, once the scales tip in favor of "I need to tell the internet how wrong they are" instead of "I'm finding my own fun to have", it is just not worth it anymore. It just isn't. That's the point I hit the bricks, I'm out and you will not see me again, because no made up fictional story or fannish experience is worth piling that much crap onto myself and I really think a some people in fandom could really stand to think about whether this whole shebang is worth it for them anymore.

CALL YOUR SENATORS!!!
I don't usually make political posts on here but please call your senator if you're in the USA.
If you do not want to go through the switchboard or are unsure of your district/senators 5calls will auto connect you when you enter your zip code
It is super easy: if you do not want to talk to anyone you can call after 4 pm and leave a message. They have to write down your comment you can stumble, stutter and re record as many times as you want.
It takes less than three minutes including the wait time for the voicemail message to play.
Spend 5 minutes. Make 5 calls. Make your voice heard.
This is great IF you live somewhere that has a senator or representative who isn’t a DT fanboy 🫤🫤🫤🫤🫤
