in 2024 I felt like I was ready to articulate exactly what troubled me about the way that Neil Gaiman cultivated an image and a particular relationship with his fandom and then. well. and the thing is that it would still have troubled me if he hadn’t turned out to be an evil rapist and was just kind of a self-obsessed guy with poor boundaries, but now it’s impossible to talk about that lol.
I am interested in what you have to say. I am interested in your perspective on this matter of reputation, fandom, and social/parasocial relationships.
I have tried but honestly I can’t really rewind my own brain to 2024 before the scandals broke and when it was all fresh in my mind due to the excitement around the Good Omens show. Ultimately it came down to having bad boundaries with his own fandom… the “rockstar” thing was very purposefully cultivated, and he got way too comfortable publicly encouraging a really extreme degree of hero worship in a way that felt deeply irresponsible from a public figure.
Like… his tumblr was quite active, his askbox was open, and he no doubt received dozens to thousands of asks per day. The ones he chose to publish were frequently over-the-top “you’re literally the reason I’m still breathing” “your books are so important to me I’m going to name my ovaries after you” type shit that’s like… personally I think you have to be a little bit of a creep not to find kind of uncomfortable. He would never attempt to graciously de-escalate or redirect that sort of interaction and really normalized it as the way to speak to and think about him while also courting the down-to-Earth and accessible Tumblr uncle thing. Just. Like. He made himself irresistible to a kind of psychologically vulnerable young queer woman hungry for validation in a way I had thought was shameless and irresponsible and retroactively think was very calculated.
yeah what always got me uncomfortable is that... like, and obviously my experience with this is the lowest stakes possible version, lol, but when you have any kind of somewhat visible internet presence and you Make Things that people see & consume, you'll get a variety of messages that range from "I hate your fucking guts in a weirdly personal way" to like, "I am/was really going through it and seeing you/your words really got me through a super dark time" with a LOT of stuff in the middle. and the latter type of posts often come with shades of "this person is really really vulnerable and is pedestalizing you and whatever you say back is going to have a really really outsized impact on them" and those are messages that I get sometimes, and I've gotten to the point where I'm always REALLY really conscious of the differential that's present there and always always try to respond in ways that emphasize my status as just a person on the same level of personhood as the asker, while at the same time not acting completely like A Peer, because how the person feels about me prevents us from really being equals in terms of the impact I can have on them vs the impact they can have on me. like, there simply is a level of emotional distance it is appriate to maintain when people latch onto you/your work to that degree.
so I would see the asks he chose to publish, and how he chose to respond to them, and my primary thought was always "wow I would never select those messages to publish and if I did I would answer them very differently" because he kind of did the opposite of the thing I try to do; he would act like he was A Peer (in other words, not acknowledging any unevenness between him & a fan) while at the same time not at all discouraging the pedestalizing. like "yes I'm a god, but I'm a god you can talk to!" as opposed to "wow hey, you can talk to me and I'm really glad my work had a positive influence on your life, but I'm not a god, I'm a guy." which I think at best shows someone is really clueless about power dynamics & bad boundaries and self aggrandizing behavior. and I guess we found out what it shows at worst.
blech.
#mmmmhmm.#a tricky line to articulate is that - absolutely the scope and magnitude of what came out against him was shocking#and far beyond what I had expected. I don't make any claims to having 'known all along' or anything of the sort#But also on the face of it. I was not surprised that he was accused of sexual assault.#Because the way he was acting with fans demonstrated a willingness to take advantage of people's admiration to feed his own ego.#which suggests a willingness to take advantage in other ways is at least a potential issue.#and there is something in the shape of hiding 'calculated intent to exploit' under a guise of 'willing to take advantage of fans'#under a guise of 'magnanimously accepting praise and feeding people's fan/idol complex'#under a guise of 'just building an approachable internet personality'#I also feel like. In relation to the whole thing with the sanctification of terry pratchett#I really felt like a lot of gaiman's posturing about the show was pretty transparently an attempt to feed off of that#energy of idolization. In a way that felt pretty shitty to do to the memory of a friend. (via screambirdscreaming)
scientists in the 1990s, putting a Get More Purple gene attached to a harmless plant virus into an already purple petunia: please get more purple
the petunia, sensing an apparent honest to god Get More Purple Disease, using the previously undiscovered RNAi antiviral ability to shut down all other purple genes along with it just in case: you put VIRUS in petunia? you infect her with the More Purple?? oh! oh! her children shall bloom white! jail for mother, jail for mother for One Thousand Years!!!!
Btw the thing this discovered is like. A foundational lab technique now and has revolutionized genetics
The concept of being 4 months clean from ai...
idc what you guys think I'm proud of him
Several AI services (chatbots ) are purposely addictive, the same way people can become addicted to gambling or shopping. We’ve literally seen in real time how ChatGPT has caused psychosis and delusions in people; it can have a huge affect on someones’s mental stability. Just because it isn’t substance-based doesn’t mean that doesn’t count as an addiction, and shaming people who are trying to move on and improve themselves is counterproductive. Im proud of that dude and his 4 month mark!
AI chatbots can fuel emotional dependence and blur boundaries. Emerging research highlights significant mental health risks. Here are import
Large language models often prioritise agreeability over truthfulness to the detriment of users
AI addiction includes the overuse of AI chatbots and companions, often leading to adverse psychological effects.
Some articles to back my statements, and this isn’t even mentioning about the predatory chatbots who do this on purpose
Then I'll mention the predatory chatbots who do it on purpose! Character.ai is one of many AI chatbot websites that're designed to be addictive.
None of the signup methods require a password. It only takes email and birthday. Minimizing time on the signin or signup screen makes it harder for people quitting to avoid relapse.
"Characters" on the website will send messages "on their own" (prompted by the site) to try to invite inactive users back after as soon as 1 day of inactivity. This is likely to force FOMO, or make users feel more like they owe the bots a response. Unhealthy attachment stuff.
Account deletion is an essential part of every service that should go smoothly, right? Right? Wrong. It takes 1-2 weeks for a Character AI account deletion to be finalized, and account deletion requests have a high chance to not go through if you're not using the app.
Rephrasing: People leaving Character.AI are pushed to download the app in order to delete their accounts, if they haven't already. This makes it harder for people to quit and stay gone. Failing to quit an addiction makes it harder to quit successfully in the future, so this feels like a feature, not a bug. On top of that, the delete account menu reads like this:
Tell me THAT doesn't sound like a bad ex. It's a carefully crafted yet hostile environment to those who are already addicted to the technology. I am so so SO happy, downright delighted that they've managed to quit, and I wish the best for others in recovery spaces or considering quitting as well!! While AI addiction is an emerging condition, there are already therapists and other mental health professionals trained to help people plan to quit and do so a bit easier. (If anyone seeing this is in need of them, there are several tumblr Communities here devoted to quitting, too. They provide a mix of advice, venting spaces, and proof that you aren't alone.)

It's interesting to think about the intersection of these two facts:
Films reflect the time period in which they were made.
Our most popular films right now are all reboots, sequels, and reused IPs.
On one hand, you could make the case that our generation is being deprived of its place on cultural timeline, because (as far as the mainstream goes) all we're being given is rehashed ideas from other time periods. Seems rather boring to analyze.
But on the other hand, I think future film historians will find that this era is culturally fascinating. Not because of the "nostalgia bait" itself, but because it represents the emergence of independent cinema and streaming.
When TV was invented, people could watch filmed media at home. You no longer had to go to a theatre just to watch cartoons or comedies.
So the studios responded with a wave of epics in the 1950s. They said "Okay, you can get Dick Van Dyke at home, but you can't get Ben-Hur." Television couldn't compete with the budget, big name stars, or visual tech that film studios could offer. They were financially incentivized to blow your socks off with visuals and big name stars.
But with the emergence of streaming and independent film, that's no longer the case. A-listers are happy to take TV roles, and TV offers Hollywood-level visuals. You don't need to mess with the theatre system at all. It's easier than ever to make good-looking movies and share them with the masses with no major studio backing.
So what's the one thing that studios still have going for them? What's the one thing that Disney can give you that an independent filmmaker can't? Yoda. The Little Mermaid. Iron Man. Fucking brands. That's all they have, so that's all they sell.
We aren't being sold reboot after reboot because it's what the people want to see, or because our current culture is somehow more boring and lifeless than ever before. It's because it's the last stranglehold that these soulless studios have over the industry. They will shove your own childhood down your throat because their domination over previous generations is the one thing they have left to sell to this one.

just found out about this cute little birdy and i am in love
from the above-linked ebird.org:
Anis are bizarre, coal-black cuckoos with long floppy tails and unique, curiously tall, flattened bills. Groove-billed occurs in a variety of open and semi-open habitats in tropical lowlands and foothills, typically staying low in shrubs and grasses. Gregarious and not particularly graceful; usually seen crashing around awkwardly in small groups.
oh my god
groove billed anis are a hilarious cuckoo situation where they ended up laying their eggs in one another’s nests instead of anyone else’s. they hang out together in groups of up to five pairs until a nest gets built (sometimes by committee, sometimes they just hang around hopefully until someone does it all on their own) then they start sneaking over and laying an egg in at a time. the females who lay for the first time will sometimes flip prior eggs out of the nest like ‘oh i KNOW this one isn’t mine! away it goes’ but eventually everyone’s laid a couple eggs in there and is stuck with the mutual hostage situation. then they take turns incubating until all the kids hatch and everyone pitches in on feeding them, because no one knows which of the kids are theirs so they all might as well.
they also like to do a team handshake where they clump up and mutually make a low bubbling noise together, to signal group affiliation. go team!
Also their eggs are incredibly beautiful. They’re a very pretty blue color, but covered by a white chalky outer layer that is easily scratched off, so they end up in various stages of in-between.

very disappointing when someone says "the bird app" and for one lovely moment I think they are talking about Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Lab, the free app that allows you to identify birds by appearance or sound, make a list of birds you have seen, and explore all the birds native to your region.... and then I realize they are talking about twitter.
I took some bird pictures yesterday, and this was the shot of the day! 📸🧡
