Happy that people are smashing flock cameras i just hope it doesn’t stop there and people put up the same resistance when they try to regulate it into safety features
Fancy smart cars track you. Pings to satellites for gps. Your paired smartphone streaming music
In the usa backup cameras have been required on all new vehicles starting in 2012. More and more features require internet to work, including potentially life saving services. Can the driver call 911? Can the car alert medics to your location? If the driver needs help what should the vehicle do?
It’s easy to see how ‘always available 911 service’ or ‘automatic crash detection with location’ could be argued as mandatory safety features. Even gps could become required
So maybe bike to that meetup without a phone
The reason Flock cameras became a flashpoint is because they are vocal about being a third party selling your location, and they are building easy to search collections of data. Could a subpoena surface cell phone pings and a spotty web of cameras to general show where you drove? Yes, but that takes effort and a legal paper trail. This is a net catching all who pass, allowing the data to build patterns, where the patterns become the source of legal action, instead of searching for information relating an existing legal matter
Flock cameras are uniquely bad, but are just a single star in a horrible constellation of data mining
not just fancy cars but almost all newer models:
Mozilla’s latest edition of *Privacy Not Included reveals how 25 major car brands collect and share deeply personal data, including sexual a
taylor swift invited a guy who owns and operates an ice detention center to her wedding swifties can pack it up forever now your bitch is awful
Wild how no one made announcements like this about P.Diddy when his trial was happening.
Wild how abusive artists like Micheal Jackson can have biography movies made and not a single mention of accused abuses or the subsequent trials will be mentioned.
Hmmmm I wonder why people feel the need to explicitly condemn women and any action they may have possibly been a part of (like inviting a shitty guy to your wedding) yet do not extend this same behavior to men in the same industry who commit abuse and atrocities on a much larger scale 🤔?
yeah i hate concentration camps because i hate women you caught me
something incredibly funny about dnd trying to get in on the cute animal of the week trend with a popular raccoon and, because this is how dnd works with regards to animals, doing so by releasing a statblock so you can fight and kill it
putting "don't you dare" in the XP count but still explaining how one would go about fighting jimothy the raccoon, a random animal with a spinal condition, is killing me
BRING HIM BACK

oh thank goodness
It's called the Global Justice Report, it is here. This is an actionable plan which can be sent to legislators and demanded of political parties. We could save the world within our lifetimes.
It has always been possible. It is still possible.
so funny to me when white american christians are like “ooh i incorporate my religious trauma into my art and thats why i draw these stained glass gothic church gold multi eyed reneissance sculpture angels agnus dei” like i know your protestant southern california ass didnt have any of that. go make some art about this
Damn way to read the assignment and go above and beyond.
the bleakness and sanitized feel of most American protestant churches really is an underused medium.
idk why tf the images were deemed to be ‘violating community guidelines’, but here’s what this post used to look like
you are a body. you have a brain

for now
Hello, I work for a large moderately evil corporation and for at least five years now I have to sign a yearly thing to say I will never ever have one of these devices in the same room as me while I work.
My large moderately evil employer takes it for granted that these things are spying on me at all times, and you should too.

It's kinda crazy that Nixon resigned over Watergate because in this current news cycle, it would be a big deal for like a week then everyone would collectively forget about it like the Venezuela or Minnesota thing
I won't publish the ask (they asked me not to), but I thought I'd still answer it publicly!
no, royalties are not a significant source of income for most authors. if you wrote something like Project Hail Mary, then absolutely, the royalties would be substantial. but that's like winning the lottery. Ryan Gosling is not starring in the movie adaption of most books.
when you sell a book to a publisher, you get what's called 'an advance against royalties'. it's usually split into multiple parts, so you might get one third for the initial sale, one third for the final revised manuscript, and one third on the publishing date.
an advance against royalties is that the publisher is saying "we believe you will eventually make X amount in royalties, so here it is ahead of time." and then you don't actually see any money for royalties until the advance is paid off. most books do not make enough in royalties to pay off the advance (I have two children's books and one fiction book, and have yet to see royalties for any of them).
advances are still great, but you need to make them stretch! for instance, last year my net income was about 30k Canadian (21k USD), which is fantastic when you consider that I mostly made it through writing. but I'm definitely not a millionaire. I can live off my writing (not trying to undersell that!) but I'll probably remain in a low income bracket for the foreseeable future.
this isn't meant to discourage anyone from seeking out writing as a career. however, there is a reason that many authors have alternate jobs with writing on the side. or, you know, rich spouses.
