i do think oil executives should be considered mass murderers and treated as such. they knew this was going to happen
PBS and NPR were never beholden to the US government.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was created so that the US government could fund public media without public media being influenced by the government. It was a private non-profit funded by the government, not a part of the government itself. This is by design. This was a good thing. It meant that even small local TV and radio stations, could afford to create media for the public good, without government influence.
This meant TV and radio stations for poor communities. For non-english speaking communities. For rural communities. For minorities. It meant that free and accessible media could be created for everyone, even if the government didn't like it.
That's why conservatives defunded it.
Because if they couldn't control it, and if it helped the people they hated, then they would have to destroy it. Do you really think that a fascist government would defund their own propaganda machine?
Not only is the idea that PBS before being defunded was propaganda wrong, but ignores the fact that defunding it is going to have long-term negative effects on vulnerable communities.
OP of the post in the screenshot called me an idiot and blocked me for pointing this out. So I'm setting the record straight. The CPB was never our enemy.
this might be inappropriate for me to talk about (you can yell at me if it is, and I will do my best to listen), but I watched the most depressing shit go down this weekend.
so a book YouTuber made a video about Sir Cameron, titled "Apparently, Sir Cameron is Problematic on Tumblr", where they read through the book live for two hours and then discussed the drama. and their conclusion was (paraphrasing here) "didn't like the writing, felt very debut quality, barely scraping 3/5 stars in that regard, but all the claims about offensive content were overblown. it was basically just some clumsiness here and there which Tumblr escalated because it's Tumblr."
which, fair enough (didn't disagree with any of the criticisms), BUT THEN the people who've been harassing me for months caught wind of this and shifted their attention. because I've been doing my best to not react, deleting inbox hate etc, so I haven't been a fun squeaky toy. this YouTuber, however, was new to being at the centre of a storm like this and had a semi-public breakdown. which, honestly? you would too. everyone likes to think they'd have a graceful, intelligent reaction until it actually happens, and then suddenly your brain is in rat-in-a-burlap-sack panic mode.
and I just have to say..... even if it is your firm opinion that the book is offensive, is this the best use of your energy? you can't channel this wrath toward the people making policies that actually affect you? the most important use of your limited time on Earth is brigading a small YouTuber who is your ally in every significant way, but who has a different opinion than you on a queer indie book?
it's just so frustrating.

Sorry we really went from free the nipple, take back the night, slut walks, and ending gender/sex segregation in sports being fucking milquetoast feminism 101 concepts to fucking girl dinner and "I just worry about fairness if we let trans girls play against cis ones" and "it was right of that woman to call the cops on a black man for existing near here in public during the day time because men are all violent monsters" and "radical feminism isn't transphobic we just need to kill all men including trans ones those oppressive traitors" and I will legit never be able to be normal about it. What the FUCK happened. I'd say I wonder what the feminists of my youth would say about this but I'm one and lemme tell ya I want to throw up. Go fucking read bell hooks or do something else useful please because all of this learned helplessness, gender essentialism, and transphobia dressed up as feminism is actively holding us back.
I just want to get dicked down again =/

Alright so after seramyudreamer made a post about some musicals giving original brooches to the rest of the team I JUST HAD TO DRAW THEM AND STUFF– I MEAN I’VE WANTED OFFICIAL, PROPER BROOCHES SO BAD SO LONG so yeah. Fanart happened.
The accuracy of the brooches is limited mind you; the pictures were sorta blurry, and I’ve never been good with proportions. Also as you can see in the reference pictures, a lot of the “metal” is really shiny, so t’s hard to tell whether or not some parts were meant to be silvery or not; so with the exception of Moon, Mercury and Saturn, I did all of the brooches with gold alone. Uranus and Neptune got different shade gold (although, Neptune does sorta look like she had a light colored crystal on her brooch… I still went with the gold look though).
Also, with the Inners (except Moon), I added a small planetary symbol into each “big” gem. Now excuse me while I adore Mercury’s beautiful brooch like a dork. Oh and the brooches themselves are in a transparent PNG, look at how pretty they are!
i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.
I think leftists need to refer to the United States as a slave (nation) state more often. It has one of the highest prison populations per capita of any nation, slavery is legal as punishment for a crime, and Black people are disproportionately imprisoned and given longer sentences. The prison industrial complex is modern-day slavery
something that i find interesting about independent animation nowadays is that if you don't have studio/streamer backing, you have to release your work yourself on the internet, but you have to do it for free on the internet because virtually nobody is going to be willing to accept a paywall just for one original show, so what you have to do in order to make any money off of it is make all of your money from merchandising, but then this means that you show must be merchandisable and have very toyetic character designs that translate easily to plushies and whatnot, but then you also need to cater your show to people who are disproportionately inclined to buy merchandise like that in the first place so that your sales can be enough to sustain you, which means that even if you want to communicate complex or difficult ideas in your work, your independent animation project must attract (at least on a first impression) and retain viewers who are both very consumerist and very capable of rabid passion, which unfortunately has a single-circle shaped venn diagram with a lot of the most toxic fandom tendencies known to man, and this explains a lot of things about independent animation and its fandoms nowadays I think
why, i haven't the foggiest notion of what you're talking about

whenever people express feelings to the effect of "i'm glad soulsov isn't super popular because fandom wouldn't be able to handle it" i think, with kindness, "don't speak that on me." i have very little interest in what Fandom Can Handle and a completely unremarkable desire to make money
one might think, "well that's awfully cynical." of course making money is not my primary motivator in writing the weirdo vn that has all but consumed me over the past few years. i even considered going with "desire to see fanart of my characters," something which inspires more genuine fondness in me. it's just that whenever people talk as if the impact of lukewarm fandom discourse on my daily life could possibly outweigh the impact of 100,000 people each giving me 10 dollars, i can only roll my eyes at best. let's be honest with each other here
Everybody go give this person ten dollars.
if I see one more "why age verification is bad" post that doesn't even bother to mention that locking young people out of huge sections of the public sphere - literally the stated goal and primary impact of this shit - is wrong in and of itself I will simply start hitting people with bricks
yes yes biometric data privacy blah blah adults can hypothetically by harmed by this too. what about the immediate and deliberate and not at all hypothetical harm to youth. why are you acting like a potential data leak about what your face looks like, which if it ever happened would at least be generally recognised as a problem, is a more serious issue than cutting millions of people off from information and community and public expression which is happening right now in the open with large scale support
it's got the stench of fucking "banned books week" on it. thousands of adults congratulating themselves for reading books literally no one is trying to stop them from reading while doing nothing to improve access for the young people who are the ones actually having those books made off-limits to them.
