This is the real mayor of Albuquerque
i enjoy the flaws in carol's worldview and that we're clearly not supposed to be 100% on her side all the time. like even though her freaking the fuck out is understandable, her weird attempts at being heroic with the "the future of humanity is in our hands" and "you're traitors to the human race" made me physically cringe with second hand embarrassment. you can sympathize with her but also see that she is being a self-centered and condescending asshole to these people just because they don't immediately agree with her, without even really bothering to hear them out about why. there is no attempt at understanding happening anywhere because she's too caught up in her own anger. she simultaneously hates herself and has a weird superiority complex about like. everything. i love women who suck really bad <3
Pluribus— "Grenade" (1.03)
I’ve seen a lot of posts that, even when they acknowledge the hivemind, still kind of speak about Zosia like ‘she’ is an individual when the show (via Carol) has spent every second reminding us that there are no individuals anymore. Now I understand that the individualizing of Zosia is mostly for ease of #yuri discussion, but it’s also like… it wasn’t ’Zosia’ that looked back at Carol while boarding the plane, it was the hivemind. ‘Zosia’ didn’t look after Carol, or offer her gentleness, the hivemind did. Everything it has done has been decided by committee, if influenced by the memories of Helen.
So it’s funny, because even the existence of a Carol x Zosia tag flies in the face of the information we’ve been given so far. ‘Zosia’ is a hand reaching out from a many-armed body and many of us still feel the impulse to ascribe individuality to ‘her’ (even the use of the pronoun brings up questions imo). And maybe that’s because the human brain sees a kind-faced actress showing care towards a traumatized and devastated main character and can’t help but attach to those kind features and acts of care some level of individuality, as well as the fact that we as viewers understand that in real life Karolina Wydra is a person, and usually, in the real world, 1 body = 1 person. And yet, that’s the same understanding of the world that Carol would have had up until the events that start the season, so, in an intriguing way, the very same long game that’s being played against Carol (whether intended cruelly by the hivemind or not) is getting played against the audience in real time. How cool!

Can’t stop thinking about Carol Sturka and how even though her marriage to Helen was obviously deeply reciprocal and deeply happy in many ways, Helen did so much to manage not only Carol’s career but Carol. Implied in just the few glorious scenes together: years and years of maneuvering around rages, maintaining functionality w/r/t alcohol, providing intimate queer outlet from career built on self-alienating compulsory heterosexuality, offering grounding perspective as antidote to self-pity.
Also, a HIVE MIND of sorts: Helen fully prepared to type while Carol talks during the aborted AMA, workshopping the answers together. (Did “George Clooney” send before the virus arrived?) Helen as the lifeblood of Carol’s career.
At the bar together, Carol’s misanthropy is only slightly frustrating and mostly charming because she’s complaining in front of someone who loves her and knows her depths, someone who both challenges and indulges her on a daily basis.
Contrast that with Carol’s behavior in front of the 5 English speakers: Carol in a deep grief she can’t talk about because she’s consistently chosen not to talk about that part of her life, Carol giving nothing of herself, Carol understandably bitter over the others having spouses and family members with them, Carol the writer who’s used to crafting narratives for an absorbed audience, albeit one she secretly disdains. She defaults to treating the other 5 like an audience, but this audience has received nothing good from her, and she just alcoholic white-lady rages all over them (KILLING MILLIONS!) with no Helen around to temper her and love her and mirror her good parts back at her.
(Helen dies so close to the start of the series and yet this is far and away one of the most compelling, lived in, lovely, real queer relationships I have ever seen on television and I LOOOOOOVE THEM.)
Trying not to pit 2 queens against each other but the golfing in the Pluribus teasers/trailers got me thinking
Better Call Saul — 6.04 "Hit and Run" Pluribus — 1.01 "We Is Us"
decided to watch pluribus. was like 'oh wow this is some great in media res storytelling, they really trust the audience to figure out how we got here from context clues'
reader, I was watching episode 2
(it's really good and worth going in with no idea what it's about, however I do suggest starting with the first episode, a very good place to start)
hall of fame
has anyone done this yet

see carol is right to be freaked out but i also think that deliberately framing her with a huge 'president of the united states of america' flag while she tries to impose her worldview to several people who come from different countries of the global south has to be an intentional choice
#you have to remember that carol is the only one outside of the others who has nobody#like the only person who understood her is GONE#but all her memories and feelings for carol are in the hivemind#but obviously none of the others know that because carol would never share that#so while i agree carol DOES appear as 'your typical american telling everyone else what to do' and its def intentional#i don't think its as simple as carol strong and good / others stupid and bad (thanks for the tags @magilewd)
