hi i was just looking at your old phoenix edgeworth kristoph "a game for two or three" fanart from 2021, and i know its really old, but it kinda stood out to me that it looks like kristoph and edgeworth are both "leading" the dance, with phoenix "following" their move more flexibly, but in the final image with edgeworth and kristoph it appears more stiff because seemingly both of them are still trying to "lead" the dance rather than follow. was this intentional or am i just spewing brainworms rn?
in general im curious abt thought you might put into your art that may not be immediately obvious
omg.. well, i can't claim my memory of what was going through my head at the time is perfect cause that piece is four and a half years old, but i did go to look at it again to jog my memory and you're not too far off lol. actually lets all look at it again because i still love this one.
so i loveee using ballroom dance because you can really pack a lot of subtext into a single pose. while i can't say i was thinking about leading/following in those terms exactly, they were each meant to convey how i see that dynamic:
kristoph+phoenix, to me, is largely defined by the game of chicken they're playing, so phoenix is having a bit of cheeky fun being dipped- it's a performance of faux-vulnerability. he's allowing kristoph to believe he's in control of the situation. whether or not he buys it is up to you.
phoenix+miles are very intimate. obviously. this era of their relationship for me has always been about how romantic i find the concept of being in on a scheme together, a sentiment i think is shared more with phoenix than with miles, who doesn't find any of this very fun. this is a point in the long arc of their relationship where it's his turn to make sure the other doesn't slip away, hence why he's pulling phoenix in.
kristoph+miles are, as you correctly latched onto, very stiff. these are two guys who are obsessed with decorum, and thus are performing a dance so properly that it looks joyless. i always imagined them both wanting to keep the other close enough to keep an eye on, but not so close that they know what they're up to, and so they have the rigid arm's distance of two people scared to touch
