I'm the anon who used to work for a halfway house, so again we're talking about a specific type of homelessness (street living for longer than six months). unhoused women are more likely to be assaulted by unhoused men they don't know than housed women (by housed men they don't know), and unhoused women are assaulted much more than housed women. there are a lot of factors but the biggest factor is that unhoused women have no protection from men. housed men also assualt unhoused women at much higher rates. abuse of women already doesn't have much of a consequence but the more marginalized the woman is, the more permissible the abuse, and the more status a man has, the more women he's "allowed" to abuse with no consequence. in the case of unhoused men, unhoused women are the only women they're "allowed" to abuse with no consequence and those women also have no way of getting away from them. yes it's a class issue, but it's a class issue exacerbating a much bigger gender issue, ie that if a woman doesn't have a place to go men in her community will opportunistically harm her.
