one of my least favorite liberalisms is “you can’t criticize xyz, because you’re abc” or “you can’t think or feel xyz, because you’re abc”
it makes the same amount of sense for black people to be homophobic as it does for white people to be homophobic. it should be clear from all of fucking human history that people going through shit does not make them any less hateful. literally every minority group, be it race or religion or whatever, has beef with other minority groups. everyone hates each other. all the asian countries have beef with other asian countries, africans have beef with african americans, black people can be racist to hispanics, hispanics can be racist to asians, arab counties hate other arab countries, etc etc etc. like welcome to earth. being a part of a minority does not make you a good person or preclude you from hating other minority groups. it’s weirdly racist to project perfect morality and upstanding citizenship onto all black americans just because of their race. and to be honest, i know this won’t help my racism allegations but the black community and black neighborhoods especially in the south are not exactly known for being an lgbt beacon, or accepting of men behaving or dressing in a less than ideally imagined “masculine” manner.
the concept of being black and homophobic is not surprising or incongruent or new at all
btw this is me criticizing white liberals being stupid more than it is me criticizing the homophobia and strict gender roles present in many black communities. before the “but what about white conservative christian’s they’re homophobic too so the the fact that you’re critiquing black people instead of them proves that you’re racist” crowd gets here. i’m mostly criticizing this dumbass tiktok comment rn
Not only does this kind of thinking reinforce the good old racist "noble savage" stereotypes and the overall romanticization, misrepresentation and downright fetishization of indigenous cultures as idyllic communities full of liberal and progressive ideals, but this is also the very justification liberals use to hate on women while trying to paint it as something else.
This is the very reason you see so much more anger directed at "terfs" and characters like JK Rowling than you ever see directed at actual perpetrators of transphobic violence. This is why the whole "Karen" meme exists, even though there must be just as many men, if not more, who act entitled in front of a retail worker. This is why lesbians are called violent for having any sexual boundaries, even though straight men definitely have those same exact boundaries too. This is why women who voted for Trump were accused of being the very reason he got selected, even though there were a lot more men who voted for him.
It is obviously, at the bottom of it, just simple good-old misogyny. But the people hating on women like this think they're being feminist about it, so it's this very thing they use as justification: that women should know better.
That of course white/straight/cis/able-bodied/middle-class/middle-aged/what-have-you men can't be expected to protect marginalized people because they are awful people and practically non-curable at this point. Point blank, no surprises there. But!! If you're a woman, your lack of enthusiastic support is an actual betrayal! I expected you to be on my side when it comes to literally everything and anything! How dare you disagree when you already know what it's like to be oppressed! You should have empathy for me, you should show endless kindness and grace! You must dedicate yourself to my cause, and those peoples' causes, and these peoples' causes, and understand the latest lingo, and be super educated about it, and never show anything but support!
In short: I can excuse anything coming from men because they're so ignorant, but you, a woman? You are on thin fucking ice.
So yeah, this sort of thinking covers up a whole lot of misogynistic, homophobic and racist bullshit underneath it, even when the people thinking like it claim to be against such things.
