Idk, one of the things that keeps tripping me up in a lot of the hiatus discussion is how often people talk about it like the show's quality was in some inevitable death spiral.
And like... I just don't personally agree with that assessment.
I liked a lot of Fifteen's era. Do I think it was perfect? No. Not even close. There are episodes and decisions I have criticisms of. There are stories that I think fumbled ideas they were reaching for. There are moments where I think the show had genuinely unfortunate timing with real-world events.
I think there were occasions where the era missed the mark on social issues, or at least didn't communicate what it was trying to communicate as effectively as it could have. That's a completely fair criticism to make.
But none of that is the same thing as the show being in a state of unstoppable decline.
Because alongside those criticisms, there were also a lot of things I genuinely loved.
There are scenes, performances, ideas, and character moments from this era that I think I'll be thinking about for years. Ncuti Gatwa brought an energy to the role that felt distinct and exciting. There were risks taken that I was glad the show took, even when not all of them landed.
That's why I struggle with the narrative that a hiatus was somehow necessary because the show was getting worse.
To me, it feels less like people are talking about an objective decline in quality and more like they're talking about whether the current version of Doctor Who was the version they personally wanted.
You can dislike an era. You can bounce off an era completely. That's been happening since 1963.
But when people talk about the last couple of years like they were some creative wasteland with nothing of value in them, I feel like I'm watching a different show.
Maybe that's because Doctor Who has always been a messy thing. A brilliant thing, an infuriating thing, an ambitious thing, and occasionally a ridiculous thing.
So when people say, "The show was clearly getting worse," my response is mostly just... was it?
Or did it stop being your version of Doctor Who for a while?
