Been haunted by a kids interactive exhibit my sister and I went to some 25 years ago. I could remember blurry bits and pieces, even was able to find the museum that housed it. But thanks to reddit I was finally able to find proof that it existed and the name of it and I feel so free now.
I feel like I should mention the concept of this exhibit: a family of four goes missing and it is up to the children to pick a family member and figure out what happened to them by exploring their house. The house was colorful with funky proportions, probably to seem fun and whimsical for kids, but just ended up feeling very... off.
(You could crawl out of the toilet through a pitch black tunnel in the washing machine. I was too scared to do this.)
Also there was a head in the freezer.
Anyway the family member I chose got shrunk down and trapped in a doll house and I watched her get carried away by mice never to be seen again. Cool!
Miss Perception's Mystery House exhibit located in the Port Discovery Children's Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.
Here's a blog with extra pics/blueprints
Can everyone who makes video content do a Deaf bitch a favor? Watch your shit with the captions on and the sound off, and then do another round of editing to fix things including but not limited to:
Captions cover the spot on the screen you put the information I need
The dialogue is captioned but not the song you have playing that the dialogue is responding to
You only captioned the person on the screen, not the person off screen who is also talking
No captioning of critical sound effects (alarms, bells, dogs barking, etc)
Speakers are not labelled at moments where it is not clear on the screen who is talking.
Captions cover the spot on the screen that you put the information I need!
Other d/Deaf people welcome to add.
This post brought to you by the fifth video tutorial I could not follow because the bad, auto-generated captions covered what I was trying to watch today.
I find it so funny that people are shocked and freaking out that Mark knows about the bloodymary ship as if he wasn't saying shit like this on this very site back in 2015
Strange racists and homophobes on the internet seem to have access to an alternate way cooler version of TV than me. "every white character on TV is in an interracial relationship" "every show has a gay couple in it" "main characters keep having to secretly be bisexual and nonbinary" "every show has gratuitous full frontal nudity" like damn promise?? What channel???
as a black gay person real like where y'all be finding this stuff pass the name
for real though, those DO NOT WATCH OR YOU'LL CORRUPT YOUR CHILDREN lists put out by conservative christian family groups is where I find all the stellar tv shows. Like, shit I didn't know half of those existed, thanks for finding them for me, gonna go watch 30 hours of gay tv now!
I think I know how this works.
For personal context, before I went to the '98 Burning Man festival, one of the things I'd read from a couple different journalists was that "everybody" runs around naked. Which, fine by me, I'd already spent a lot of time in clothing-optional spaces, I'm not fanatic about it but it's nice.
So I got there early and set up a public shade structure on one of Black Rock City's main roads and spent most of each afternoon just watching the crowds go by. I don't remember seeing more than one actually naked person the whole week. I think a topless woman passed by my intersection maybe every half an hour, sometimes once an hour. So why in the hell were people, normally pretty smart and observant writers, coming away with the impression that everybody was naked?
Then I remembered an unrelated passage from Joel Garreau's great book about the history of the outer-ring suburbs, Edge City. Mall developers told him flat-out that they tried to keep the crowds in their malls less than 5% black. Not because they themselves were racist, but because they had determined, experimentally, that if more than 5% of the people in the mall are black, the median white shopper will wrongly describe the mall as at least half black, as mostly black. And not a few of them would describe it, at 6% black, as a mall where "only black people go." Why?
Because, emotionally, they were still upset over the last one when the next one came into view.
Same as the journalists describing Black Rock City as all naked. Same as the right-wing religious culture warriors describing television as entirely mixed-race and gender non-conforming. Not because it's even vaguely true, we know that, but because they haven't gotten over their discomfort over the last one by the time the next one comes along. The anger, not the stimulus, is the part that's continuous, so their mind lies to them that it's "all" the thing they can't get over.
Similar effect for the presence/proportion of women in things, by the way: https://health.howstuffworks.com/mental-health/human-nature/perception/how-17-equals-496-the-amazing-multiplying-women.htm

Incredibly violent take of mine but I actually donât think you need to relate to a story in any way to enjoy it. You can enjoy a story even if you canât point at a character and insert some aspect of your personality or identity into them. In fact I would argue the need for a character like that to be present in every single story you experience is a sign of stunted growth.
Ask that someone sent a blog I follow that inspired this. You are twisting yourself into some incredibly bizarre pretzels so you can go âaha, a character I Relate Toâ and itâs just like. Well actually there just may not be parts of this film you can see yourself in. And thatâs okay. You can enjoy this movie for many of its merits that arenât âI am in itâ.
One of the main points of fiction is the opportunity to experience viewpoints and forms of existence that are different from our own. You can find a character or story interesting without it being like you somehow.
pewdiepie was one of the harbingers of the alt right internet apocalypse i hate that skinny white man with all my heart
I blame him (at least partially) for the rise in anti-indian racism in the late 2010s to today and people look at me like I'm the friend who's too woke when I say that. But it's true
and youâd be right to blame him. he normalized the rise in anti-indian and anti-desi racism through âjokes.â it took me forever to take pride in my indian heritage bc of the culture he helped set up.
med people are so annoying "This family's 8 year old child who was about to go through a major surgery and kept crying that she was hungry so they pitied her and gave her food, she then had a heart attack in the surgery. They're so stupid đ" girl they didn't know that could happen or why it happens. it takes so little time to explain to them that will happen instead of telling them "no food" with no explanation 10 times
"Before surgery, your bodyâs reflexes that protect your airway are relaxed by anesthesia. If thereâs food or liquid in your stomach, it will near certainly come back up and go into your lungs, which can cause choking, a severe lung / heart infection or even a heart attack. Thatâs called aspiration, and it is life-threatening. It's hard, but it's only a single day to prevent near certain death. Not eating or drinking beforehand massively lowers the risk and helps prevent these life threatening situations under anesthesia." <- TIP: patients have brains which allows them to receive information just like you
I have four kids. Iâve had one or another of them need some kind of surgical procedure that requires anesthesia four or five times over the past 15 years.
This Tumblr post is the first time someone has explained to me *why* I couldnât feed them before those instances.
Iâm not stupid. I understood that just fine. Hell, my kids would have understood that just fine. But no one bothered to tell us.
i did know this before having kids (i have six). we have a kid that's needed multiple procedures requiring anesthesia. and every single time, i am asked multiple times if i'm sure he was not given any food or water after a certain point.
every single time i have had to say, "i understand that if he had food or water, he could aspirate it into his lungs under anesthesia. i am not lying to you." THEN someone would make a little note and i would stop being repeatedly asked.
not a single time was that risk explained to me. the only reason it came up was because i already knew. i still don't understand why it isn't standard pre-op counseling or pre-op check information, when me as a parent acknowledging the actual risk also put THE MEDICAL STAFF at ease because i conveyed that i had informed understanding as reason to not lie about giving my kid food.
"maybe some people will get nervous and refuse surgery" okay so they need more counseling about risks and anxiety, not less information in a way that actually does endanger their child or themselves!

hey. if you want to actually change minds, don't be unkind to the people you're trying to convince. or you CAN but in most scenarios you'll alienate a potential ally. what matters more to you? taking your anger out on someone? or helping them actually understand the situation at hand?
"wow you're fucking stupid OBVIOUSLY x isn't y. can you learn to read or something" <- changes no minds, the person you're talking to will struggle to agree with you because by extension they would have to agree that they're stupid for being wrong, total happiness for everyone involved is through the FLOOR. in the NEGATIVES. no one wins, even if you feel good in the moment.
but....
"hey there, I understand that you're very passionate about this, but the most recent studies out there show that x isn't y. I just wanted to let you know, because you clearly care a lot about the subject!" <- I have seen this change minds firsthand, it's easier for the person to agree with you because they're not feeling defensive over an insult, and total happiness for everyone involved either stays the same or goes UP. everyone wins. if they're still being silly about it, at least you can walk away knowing that you tried. and often times, even if they show no change in the moment, that kind of interaction stays with people. they'll ruminate on it. you might have helped incite a later change of heart.
all that being said, conserve your energy and efforts. if someone repeatedly shows that they have no intention of considering any of your words, disengage! walk away! you CAN change minds but you CAN'T change everyone. "is this a constructive use of my time?" is a question worth asking yourself when you catch yourself talking to someone who is attempting to animorph into a brick wall. patience and kindness are awesome weapons but you do have to pick your battles. âWhile bats can only sense the outer shapes and textures of their targets, dolphins can peer inside theirs. If a dolphin echolocates on you, it will perceive your lungs and your skeleton. It can likely sense shrapnel in war veterans and fetuses in pregnant women. It can pick out the air-filled swim bladders that allow fish, their main prey, to control their buoyancy.
It can almost certainly tell different species apart based on the shape of those air bladders. And it can tell if a fish has something weird inside it, like a metal hook. In Hawaii, false killer whales often pluck tuna off fishing lines, and âtheyâll know where the hook is inside that fish,â Aude Pacini, who studies these animals, tells me. âThey can âseeâ things that you and I would never consider unless we had an X-ray machine or an MRI scanner.â
This penetrating perception is so unusual that scientists have barely begun to consider its implications. The beaked whales, for example, are odontocetes that look dolphin-esque on the outsideâbut on the inside, their skulls bear a strange assortment of crests, ridges, and bumps, many of which are only found in males.
Pavel Golâdin has suggested that these structures might be the equivalent of deer antlersâshowy ornaments that are used to attract mates. Such ornaments would normally protrude from the body in a visible and conspicuous way, but thatâs unnecessary for animals that are living medical scanners.â
-Ed Yong, An Immense World
Cetacean echolocation is one of those things that boggles your mind once you really start to think about the implications. They can see each others' hearts beating fast with fear or excitement. They can see if another dolphin is healthy, or pregnant; how the fetus is doing; if they have ingested debris. Their echolocation is also incredibly precise: a bottlenose dolphin could discriminate between cilinders differing in wall thickness by just 0.23 mm (0.009 inch) from 8 meters away!! And they certainly notice when something is off.
I'm not sure if I ever shared this story before here, but in Curacao, when I was allowed to assist in a guest interaction programme, there was suddenly consternation in the pool behind us. A guest had entered the water and the dolphins were going crazy, paying no heed to the trainers anymore. The lead trainer that was with me gave the dolphins to me to watch over while she went to help. When she came back she told me what had happened. The guest that had caused so much uproar had left the water again and was asked if he had done anything to upset the dolphins. He hadn't, and he couldn't imagine what was wrong... until he mentioned he had a pacemaker. The younger dolphins in the pool had never seen someone with a pacemaker before and apparently it rocked their world.
It was such a wild experience, and offered such a cool insight into how dolphins experience their world. I'll never forget it.
Bitch we're ALL the problematic transsexual you were warned about via call out posts and news articles. Do not betray your siblings in the struggle, we are all next.
"But what if they did x, y, and/or z! They need to be held accountable!"
I means it's honestly unlikely they did x, y, and/or z. Most call out posts are just bullshit lies or so taken out of context that they're just as fraudulent as a bullshit lie.
However, if they did? A callout post is useless. It's utterly pointless.
A callout post does nothing but:
Isolate the supposed perpetrator, making it impossible for them to stay in a community that would otherwise be able to go "Hey bro/sis/sib, that was fucked, let's talk about it and fix it".
Puts a spotlight on the possible victim that prevents them from recovery or healing.
Creates drama that creates damage for all parties.
And that's if their was any truth in the post.
A callout post that's just a bunch of garbage though? That:
Isolates the victim of the slander, leaving them volunrable to attacks and harassment
Feeds into transphobia both generalized and specific to the victim of slander
Creates infighting, gatekeeping, and policement of the community
Often forces people who had nothing to do with the initial drama to take part in a now ever delevoping drama, which creates more callout posts, more slander, more harrasment, and more attacks on community members. Most often effecting the most marginalized members of out community.
Forces people to view content that is often triggering and demands that they make a moral statement about it, while trying to process or cope with the content.
Creates room for Terfs, tehms, radfems, and transphobes of all brands, to stick their ugly heads in and go "see, I was right about the trans cult, do you see what monsters they are".
There is never a valid reason for a callout post. There is no callout post that has ever successfully "held someone accountable for their actions" and there is no callout post that has not done damage to our community.
the weird thing about being a leftist is the government calling you a radical extremist and your family believing that youre a radical extremist and the whole times your main political beliefs are shit like "we live in a world where we could very easily end world hunger, homelessness, most disease, poverty, ect. and the people in power are choosing not to, and thats evil and should change" and that bigotry is bad
every time a young gay person quits smoking or makes the decision that they want to quit, the sun shines on us all with the promise of happiness and beauty.
i appreciate everybody thatâs sharing the sentiment that itâs good for anyone to quit smoking (it is) but i very specifically wanted to highlight and encourage LGBTQ youth because lesbian, gay, and bisexual people are about 1.5 to 2.5 times more likely to smoke cigarettes than heterosexual people, and the statistics for transgender people are even higher than cisgender people. this is due to tobacco companies marketing heavily and aggressively to LGBTQ communities and exploiting the higher rates of mental health struggles prevalent in our communities.
i want and hope to see all my LGTBQ people live long, healthy, fulfilled lives despite how predatory and punishing this world can be. you should stay around as long as you can to make it a little better in your own way.
I wanna specifically shoutout trans men here because back in the day (I donât know if itâs still prevalent) there was quite a common rumour going around that smoking could make your voice deeper, which meant a huge upstick in young trans men taking up smoking.
So, if any trans men are being told about this, itâs not true!! Smoking will not change your voice, at least not until youâre about forty years down the line and youâve already irreparably destroyed your lungs and throat and mouth and pretty much every other organ in your body. When you hear heavy smokers with deeper, scratchier voices it is literally because their vocal cords have been ruined. This is not a passive effect of smoking, it is a very very damaging one!
Itâs simply not worth it! There will be no meaningful changes except terrible ones. Voice training will do a lot more for you than cigarettes will, I promise that the people urging you to start smoking as a voice training method do not have your best interests at heart!
(And you know what, this also goes for not eating due to the idea that starving yourself will decrease your chest size. Like with smoking, there will be no meaningful changes except terrible ones. Your body is worth so much more than that and there will always be healthier alternatives!)
I wanna see trans people thrive, and one day when things get better and youâre able to start your transition, youâll want a body that will last as long as possible so you can enjoy every little moment of your life. Please take care of yourself!!
As for trans women and other trans people taking estrogen HRT, smoking has been proven to reduce or even cancel out the effects of estrogen on the body. If you quit smoking, your transition will be faster, fuller, and smoother. I know that it's hard, but your boobs will thank you!
(Btw, afaik smoking only has this effect on estrogen from HRT. Estrogen that AFAB bodies produce naturally is not affected, so smoking is still bad for trans men)
In addition (and this applies to all trans people), smoking increases risks of complications during surgery, so doctors might refuse to let you get whatever surgeries you want if you smoke. They'll at least tell you to quit for a while beforehand, which will be easier to do if you'd already quit to begin with.
Sleep well Marjane Satrapi. You were a huge influence on me and my work in a way that cannot be understated. You will be missed but your work will carry on for generations to come

This beautiful outdoor choir performance is an act of rebellion, and efforts are underway to make it illegal to do this.
The choir is part of the larger organization Women of the Wall, a multidenominational, international group of women who are campaigning for the right of women to pray at the Kotel in Jerusalem in an egalitarian way -- to sing, read Torah, and to pray out loud, taking up space, as women.
The Kotel is currently administered by a highly Orthodox rabbinate, which I suspect would prefer it if women just . . . didn't pray there at all. Grudgingly, they allow a teeny tiny official prayer space for women, who are expected to be very quiet and Orthodox about their prayer. The Orthodox men who take up most of the space at the Kotel haaaaaaaaaaate when people pray in non-Orthodox styles there, and they especially loathe it when women do that, to the point where they will physically attack people like the Women of the Wall, by throwing things like chairs and hot coffee at them while they're having services.
The Israeli government has been making noises about setting up an egalitarian prayer area at the Kotel for ages and ages, and noises is all we're going to get from them for the foreseeable future. Therefore, Women of the Wall, and their choir of beautiful Kol Isha voices will continue to campaign, to pray, to read Torah, and to sing for the right of all Jews to encounter the Divine in our most holy place.
Shout out to the autistic whoâs abilities have regressed as theyâve gotten older.
âYou didnât used to be like this when you were a kid.â I know please donât remind me
"This never bothered you when you were a kid."
Yes it did. I just let it slide because I was taught that I'm "too sensitive" anytime something bothered me. But now I'm finally standing up for myself.
"You never struggled with this when you were a kid."
Yes I did. I just burned myself out in order to do it so I wouldn't be punished. But now I'm accepting myself enough to not force myself to do what I was never meant to do.
"You didn't have these problems when you were younger."
Yes, I did. I just spent my child/teen years with structured institutions like school while not having to worry about whether I had a roof over my head or food to eat and spent my early adult years using up every bit of adrenaline I will ever have to ignore the fact that I've been chronically burnt out my whole life.
"But you did fine for years, why would it be bad now?"
Because I spent the first 37 years of my life burning the candle at both ends to function even remotely and I scraped that barrel empty. Then I crashed and burned and now I'm likely never recovering fully.
