Zombie setting where the undead are drawn towards unhygienic scents, so survivors constantly bathe to avoid being eaten.
Zombies are docile when adorned with flowers.
Settlements overgrown with herbs and flora.
Barely any banditry; everyone is focused on farming and gathering.
Different human factions and towns named after flowers like Lilies, Orchids, Roses, etc.
Instead of immediately killing an infected survivor, theyâre given special funeral rites - the zombie is covered with flowers to keep them calm, and allowed to walk out from the settlement to join the hordes.
#this makes me curiously sad #the idea of flowers covering the undead #that symbol of human love is what makes them docile
me to zombies:
Thank you all for the responses!!!! I got a few more notes to share from folks asking me about this setting :D
Itâs incredibly risky to attack zombies. The scent of the attackerâs aggressive intent coupled with spilled pungent rotten blood drives other zombies into a frenzy.
Zombies given funeral rites grow flowers within their bodies, eventually bursting from their chest and head area. These zombies are naturally gentle and their presence tames other zombies in the vicinity. Due to their helpfulness, itâs taboo to harm âbloomingâ undead:
Sweaty summers are the worst and everyone hopes they have enough dried flowers to last the winter.Â
Itâs a colourful apocalypse! An overabundance of flowers in the world leads to plenty of dyes and busy little honey bees!! Scented candles are a thriving export.
Survivors who help spread flowers, look after âbloomingâ undead, cull the hordes, and herd zombies away from safe areas are affectionately called Florists.
Regular weapons such as guns and knives are still used but everyone prefers perfumed water guns, spray bottles, and incense.
Zombies are so overwhelmed by the pleasant scent of rain that entire hordes cease movement until itâs gone.
Every other zombie apocalypse lore is cancelled this. THIS is what I want
My young college dudes, let me tell you a thing.
Your professors owe you a syllabus.
There's a lot of stuff that varies a bunch from school to school and professor to professor, but a syllabus is a vital document for each of your classes and the professor should provide you with one. If the professor DOES NOT provide you with a syllabus, or if the syllabus is outdated or contradictory here is what you do:
Ask your professor for a syllabus or for an updated/corrected syllabus.
If they do not give it to you, you complain to their department chair. If they ARE the department chair, you complain to the dean.
The reason that a syllabus is important is because it is your contract for the class. It is the document that the professor can hold up and say "you knew you were expected to do this thing, it is in the syllabus" and that YOU can hold up and say "you don't get to give us this assignment, it is not in the syllabus."
A syllabus is NOT just a list of assignments. Your syllabus should include:
Information about required texts.
Contact information for your professor with preferred contact method noted by the professor.
The grading plan for the course (ten quizzes adding up to a thousand points? Two exams, a final, and class participation for 100 points? Three weighted exams? Attendance as 80% of your grade?).
Schedule for major exams/assignments.
The professor's late work and attendance policies.
The add/drop and final withdrawal dates for the class.
The professor's office hours.
The extra credit policy, if any.
A general description of the course and how you can expect the term to go ("there will be twice-weekly video lectures, a monthly knowledge quiz that is ungraded, weekly discussion boards, two major exams, and one research project" "attendance is mandatory and will be a large portion of your grade; there will be two exams and a final" "students will be expected to complete three small research papers and one long essay, as well as take monthly quizzes").
A general description of the types of assignments/exams you'll be completing ("weekly discussion board, 400 words minimum and two responses" "100 question multiple choice exam covering chapters 4-9" "timed essay" "3-5 page essay on subject")
Your professors SHOULD also give you a schedule of assigned readings/lectures/homework with due dates so that you can plan out your term, but that is less important than the syllabus. The syllabus is for your benefit, it is your shield from professors doing random shit like deciding that "actually now the midterm is half your grade" three weeks before the end of the term.
Giving students a syllabus in a timely manner is one of those things that professors HAVE TO do. They don't get to be wishy-washy about it. If you get to the second week of your term and you do not have a syllabus (with the proper dates for your term verified by the professor!) in your hot little hands you should either be complaining to the dean or dropping the class.
I know that dropping a class last minute fucking sucks. I know that scrambling to find something to fill the hole in your schedule or to get your minimum units is extremely shitty. But trust me, it is SO MUCH WORSE to have a professor who changes their schedule or their requirements at will if you don't have a document that you can use to say "this is bullshit."
I'm sorry, professor, I consider publishing your course a day late, having a mandatory live zoom meeting during business hours to stay enrolled for an asynchronous class, and requiring students to use a $60 ***pdf*** that you wrote as their textbook to be exceptionally unprofessional and since I've still got 14 days to get a refund I'm totally not paying $150 to take your class.
Also, for all the newbie professors out there: a syllabus is not just a greeting and a list of assignments. If you haven't given your students AT LEAST your office hours, your late work policy, and your preferred method of being contacted, then you have not given your students a syllabus it's just sparkling announcements.
But really. Sir. SIR. You teach Speech 100. This is one of the most basic classes with like, 20 of the most widely available accepted textbooks and you want me to pay sixty dollars for a pdf of a book that you rewrite every semester so that there are no previous editions?
Buddy this is interpersonal communication, not introductory rhetoric. Why is one of your *four* total assignments about Socrates?
Maybe it's the fact that I've taken Spch 100 interpersonal communication three times already, maybe it's the fact that I grew up with somebody who taught Spch 100 interpersonal communication from 1981 to 2018, but buddy what the fuck are you doing?
"Some of our lectures will only be available for 24 hours so it is up to you to stay on top of it."
Friend, you are teaching an asynchronous online 100-level class at a community college during a pandemic. Get off your high horse, a third of your students are probably parents. There is no reason whatsoever to limit access to course materials to 24 hours unless you are doing it to be a controlling asshole.
Also YOU published your class a day and a half late! You don't get to publish your class late with an incomplete syllabus and tell students to "stay on top of it." Especially not since that means that people have two fewer days to buy your PDF textbook and only one full day to prepare for your mandatory 1pm on a Tuesday zoom meeting!
Why do you require me to have access to a printer for an online class? Oh yeah it's because you expect me to print out and draw on sections of your $60 ebook.
SIR. No thank you.
Kids, new students: this is a level of bullshit and disorganization from a professor that you do not have to put up with. This is a neatly ordered series of red flags that say "this professor is going to be absolutely unbearable."
Also *any* humanities class where your whole grade is 4 assignments should get serious side-eye. You should be able to pass most 100 level humanities classes by just turning in weekly assignments. 4 assignments means that by the time you figure out how the professor grades you're probably close to halfway through the class. Look for classes that require weekly participation as a major chunk of the grade because that way, even if you fuck up a project in a major way, just showing up can save your ass.
Me the first time I was in college: this isn't fair, but I guess these are the hoops I gotta jump through.
Me now: absolutely not. I am too old, too experienced, and my ass is too fat to fit through that hoop. Kid, you are an ADJUNCT, what the hell do you think you're doing?
One of the stated goals of the first assignment isn't "assess understanding of the subject" or "introduce basic concepts" it is "prove access to course materials, such as the textbook."
Friend. You are supposed to have global learning outcomes for your students. If your goal is "teach students how to pass MY" class and not "teach students the basics of interpersonal communication" you are a bad teacher.
Okay everyone get out your bingo cards because the professor just managed to get his class halfway updated and here's what I've found:
"This Class Is Not A Safe Space"
"Discussion question: If you are MALE say four things that you think females normally say. If you are FEMALE say four things that you think males normally say."
Prager U vid is one of three total resources on the topic of climate
Chris Rock "How to keep from getting your ass kicked by the police" video as part of the "conflict resolution" unit

A video on the "proven" techniques of how to spot a lie from the author who owns this webpage (time to update your security certs, Pamela):
And just for shits and giggles, the first assignment is due one month into the semester so you'll have no idea what his grading style is until well past the add/drop date and that assignment is the only one that requires the $60 pdf textbook that he wrote. This is HIS description of that assignment:
Purpose â To check that the student has completed initial tasks; included, but not limited to: 1. Having access to the textbook. 2. Demonstrating that the student has interacted with the text. 3. Reading and understanding the text.
Buddy.
No.
Are you fucking kidding me?
Also the midterm and final were scheduled for a one-hour slot on weekdays in spite of, again, being an asynchronous course.
So I've already dropped it (good riddance) but I probably WILL contact the dean and say "hey so I signed up for this asynchronous course because I am a returning student with a full-time job and your professor decided on his own that he was going to schedule 1pm zoom times and 1pm exams for all his async students, which is probably going to cause problems for other students who are enrolled because I'd guess that at least some of them have classes that are SCHEDULED for T/TH 1pm class meetings oh and also just FYI your boy was 28 hours late on publishing his class and didn't get his syllabus up until 34 hours after he was supposed to so I'm not really sure his time management skills are up to teaching async classes and ADDITIONALLY he noted that he would only make the lecture materials available for 24 hours and then did not list when those lectures were scheduled in his syllabus so it would be very easy for busy students to miss lectures because he didn't schedule them but also won't be leaving the materials available. So. You know. Someone should probably check on that."
His score on ratemyprofessor is 1.8 and even the two people who gave him a 4 say "I failed the final because he hadn't taught us any of that information or put any of those fields of study on his final exam study guide."
Also, new students, you must learn the proper way to complain to the dean.
Every department has That One Fucking Asshole who everyone wants to see gone but students tend to complain about personalities or "why is my speech teacher assigning an economic ethics paper published by a conservative think-tank funded by the Waltons" and that is not how it's done. The administration may agree that he's an asshole, but "he's an asshole" isn't a good enough reason not to renew someone's contract and go through the time and effort to bring in a new hire.
So you get them on bureaucratic shit. "Published his course late," "did not provide office hours," "did not provide a way to communicate and did not respond to calls, emails, or canvas messages," "set required meeting times for asynchronous courses" - THIS is the shit that the administration can pin a professor to the wall on because it isn't student said vs. Professor said.
Like, look, you are important and your feelings and thoughts matter, but the administration knows there will always be someone who is offended about something innocuous who doesn't know how school works and they're not going to write up a professor because of how a student thinks the class should be run. But they WILL write up and add observations for a professor who doesn't run a classroom the way that the school policy says a class should be run.
It's getting to be school time again, and some of you will have garbage professors.
You're paying for this, do not accept this kind of behavior. Read and re-read the last part from @ms-demeanor because complaining effectively is key to stopping this bullshit.
If you are stuck with a professor that is administering thier class well but being hostile, belittling students, not making reasonable accommodations or otherwise being a jackass, write down specific incidents (what was said to who where and when, if possible, take screenshots or make recordings of class), and look up your school's nondiscrimination policies, classroom safety standards and inclusivity goals. It's way more effective to say "on September 3rd professor last name said "(fucking nonsense here)" to student Y, which is a clear violation of classroom safety rule (Cite specific rule) and stated inclusivity goal "(goal here)" and I want to know what administrative actions I can expect to see while you handle this." Than it is to say "hey prof lastname's been really mean/a bigot in class"
The admin almost certainly wants to fire this asshole too. Give them the legal ammo they need.

[id; a tweet by nathan bernhardt @jonberhardt: âwhy do marvel movies do so much stuff in CGI surely they could have just had wardrobe-â makeup and wardrobe is a union crew. the CGI animation sweatshop is not. it really is that simple. end id/]
This is probably why Cats was a CGI nightmare. Rather than higher a costume designer to re-imagine the leggings and fur hats for a modern audience. Which would have required hiring union work people to make the hundreds of costumes theyâd have needed they just CGI ed some cat fur onto their actors.
Did the CGI team do their best and give it their all, probably. But they shouldnât have been hired. They shouldnât have been put in a position of making costumes and worlds and extras, and, and, and. They should have been hired for what CGI is best at, special effects when physical special effects arenât possible and the rest shouldâve been left to physical craftspeople.
Thereâs nothing wrong with CGI when used sparingly and married with physical effects and costumes to enhance the realness of the world but when you plop some actors in morph suits on a green screen set and just replace everything with CGI your movie sucks.
Compare the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and youâll understand what I mean.
CGI people deserve a union, deserve respect, and deserve not to be treated as an isnta movie factory. They deserve to be allowed to hone their craft and dedicate time and energy to creating the kind of world-building effects we all know and love.
Oh hey this makes Hollywoodâs obsession with CGI suddenly make a lot more sense huh.
If there was a way to run SUPER MEGA AD BLOCKER on this website I fucking would
âPlease oh please open up your computer to a porn virus! If you donât youâre evil!â
Freeloader Cominâ through!
We didnât start this war internet users have with ads - We might have moaned about banner ads, but it was only when they started making noises when we might be listening to music or a podcast or whatever, causing two sound sorces at once, that we started trying to block ads universally rather than just a specific type of ad (pop ups).
And since then ads have gotten worse - Actual malware rather than merely breaking one of the fundamental sins of web design - though shalt not autoplay anything with sound. And the more aggressive a website is with âplease turn off adblockâ the less I trust it to bother to vet ads and advertisers to make sure theyâre not installing malware.
Not to mention that the idea that avoiding ads is âfreeloadingâ is hilariously backward. Advertisement is a transaction between the platform and the advertiser, the user has no obligation to provide the views/clicks the platform has promised. Using an adblocker isnât freeloading in the same way that leaving the room to get a snack during a commercial break isnât cheating the tv network.
Ok yâall, I work as a web developer and Iâm here to tell you that you are 100% right and that itâs shit. SO Iâm going to tell you how to get around websites that block you from using their website if youâre using an adblocker.Â
Every website uses a language called JavaScript; long story short itâs a website language that allows developers to do the crazy shit you see on websites. Now the easiest thing to do is to disable JavaScript to stop them from knowing you have an adblocker:
Oh no! Iâm blocked from viewing the website. It would be a terrible shame if I were able to right click and select the âinspectâ feature
Click the three dots in the top right and open the âSettingsâ Menu
And then scrolled down to âDebuggerâ and checked the âDisable Javascript Optionâ
And then just refreshed the page

I was about to say âhow do you know someone has done that unless itâs you, OPâ but then I recognized the name and I went on twitter to check and sure enough he was my creative writing professor in college
No one gonna talk about how he called catholicism, Catholic canon
You know thatâs the origin of the term âcanon,â right?
another classic hit from the people that lost verizon a billion dollaridoos
hi as pride month draws near for june reminder that cishet aces/aros are not LGBT and donât belong in our spaces
And like, just a reminder that people like op are the people I donât want to share my spaces with.
Every time I see an exclusionist on here and I click their profile theyâre like 17 or 19 or maybe 21 at best.Â
And thatâs fair- itâs not like people that age canât have opinions or be right, theyâre people.
But when I think about how long it took me to work out my own damn sexuality, gender, and all that crap, and how gently I stepped once I realised I was queer, and how much listening to people I did to see who the hell was out thereâŚhow much I am STILL learning about people who have different experiencesâŚ
âŚit feels really odd to see people this young being so secure in their belief of who should be excluded from the community.Â
Not how to support and include, to help and support, but how to exclude.
LikeâŚbeing confident in your own sexuality at 19? Fuck yeah, good for you, Iâm happy you had a better chance and an earlier start than I did.
But⌠telling other people theyâre not queer enough to be in âyourâ space?
Your space? Not mine anymore? Huh.
Iâm over here at 35 still listening and learning and trying to understand everyoneâs perspectives, discovering that sexuality is even more complex and nuanced than I knowâŚand all these people barely out of their teens are talking like they know everything there is to know about being LGBT, ever. Like itâs all been written down, stamped, sealed, confirmed by some Authority.
Mmmm. No. Just⌠have an ounce of humility. Try gaining some perspective, please.
You havenât lived long enough to even really listen to real life aces, to really think about what LGBT means. I donât mean this as an ageist insult, I just really think that this kind of shit deserves TIME- hell I know it deserves time and thought because I am STILL unlearning bad assumptions and behaviours, and STILL meeting people who define themselves outside of the frame that I was once taught meant âLGBTâ. And you, a teen raised in a world thatâs still pretty fucking homophobic and doesnât recognise half of what the LGBT community itself has taken years to acknowledge, you think you know it all?
Because youâre online? While youâre here, read some posts where ace people talk about how theyâre treated. Forget semantics for a while: read the experiences. Iâm online too, I have been for some time. Doesnât make me right, but experience is of some value. Experience in listening to queer people who arenât quite like me, that is, in trying to understand how I am similar, instead of trying to figure out how they do not belong. In how people rework things, figure out how they can be less harmful, more inclusive, more representative of all those who are marginalised. See, Q is queer but also often Questioning. Itâs still important to let people be Questioning, there is an astounding amount of queerphobia in the world and we are NOT done working out the labels. We may never be. Not so long ago, the T in lgbt was under question. Bisexuals are still being excluded. So Iâm being told I donât matter by people who werenât even born yet when I realised I wasnât straight. Theyâre skipping right over all the reflection and going straight to self-affirmation by exclusion.Â
Which, again- if you are born into a world where you never have to question your identity, oh good grief I hope thatâs real for everyone some day. But weâre not there yet, yanno? And I resent being told that after all these years of soul-searching and careful, very careful questioning of whether I belong and how I can be a good member of the community, people arrive so 100% certain of their claim to being LGBT that the first thing they do is try to kick others out.
tl;dr I was here first and Iâm not amused.
My general feeling when These Kids start yelling about who does or doesnât Belong in the collection of the broken, hurt and strange that is the queer community:
Pride month is an especially shitty time to tell queer people that theyâre not queer enough and that theyâre not welcome.
Iâd like to take this opportunity to invite any exclusionists following me to kindly eff off (and also unfollow me while youâre at it :) Happy Pride! Â
reminder again that if you want to make a community that is safe and welcoming for questioning people, you are going to have cishets there. thatâs just how it works. you canât say âyouâre welcome if youâre questioning but only if you secretly already know the answer, and itâs the right answerâ
some questioning folks are going to mess around in the space of What Gender Feels Like to them, and come away concluding that, yeah, they are cis! but now theyâre cis with an understanding of what that means to them, rather than just because itâs viewed as the âdefault settingâ
telling people theyâre totally welcome while theyâre figuring stuff out, but that if they come to the wrong conclusions, theyâre no longer welcome is not really welcoming. Â
