This one is always worth reposting. Telegram sent by Dorothy Parker to Robert Benchley, December 31, 1929.
Please don't ask me for relationship advice unless you are prepared to receive some truly upsetting information because some people are ready for the "He's exhibiting the literal textbook signs of a psychological abuser and you need to get away from him before he successfully cuts you off from your support network" talk and some people aren't
FOR WHOEVER NEEDS A REMINDER:
There is never any justification for someone putting their hands on you in any way without your consent short of immediate risk of harm or death.
If someone tells you that "the way I'm acting is your fault because you know that doing X thing would make me do it and you chose to do it anyway" is just fancy bullshit talk for, "I know my behaviour is wrong, but I don't want to be held responsible for it so I'm pushing it on you"
Nothing good ever, ever comes from someone who tells you, "I don't want you talking about our relationship with anyone". This person cannot handle accepting responsibility and processing criticism so they need you to never, ever question them. That's easier if they control the narrative and your friends aren't there to cut in.
Nothing constructive comes from screaming.
"It's not like that all the time" is optimistic and sweet, but the truth is, it shouldn't be like that at all. Sweet words and gifts and gestures don't erase being frightened for yourself or for your loved ones. That is not normal. Don't minimize it.
It is not healthy or normal to be genuinely afraid of saying "no" to someone, for any reason at all. Violence, outbursts, retaliation, anything. You should not have to be afraid of someone's reaction to your boundaries.
You are not responsible for saving anyone. Even if you love them. Even if they have nobody else. At the end of the day, if they want to hurt themselves in any way, they will, and you can't stop them forever. People need to want to improve before they can actually improve, and if they're threatening to harm themselves to keep you around, they're using your love to hold themselves hostage. You do not decide their choices for them, and they don't get to shunt that off on you.
There will always be other people who can love you better. You will not be alone forever. This will not be the last time you care for someone like this and it will not be the last time someone cares for you
This applies to ALL relationships btw
Heyy guess who missed the 1 year anniversary of this post and the end of the friendship that inspired it

Pictish drip was insane. Look at this choker:
Chances are thats going to be the only thing a Pict warrior is wearing as he charges at you naked covered in blue paint and screaming with a sword in hand
Loveee that illustration on the left with the chain on. Definitely worn by the sexiest bitch above the Antonine Wall circa 400 AD.
Question. Did they really not wear clothes or was that an outsider trying to make them seem subhuman creating a fake reason? (Source: Julius Caesar making impossible shit up about at least one island in the Mediterranean and two in the Atlantic)
They wore clothes but fought naked, generally speaking. They were a people of northern Scotland and they farmed sheep so I assume they dressed warmly and in a lot of wool though depictions of their clothing are scant. They made very beautiful brooches/cloak pins. Fighting naked was an intimidation tactic practiced by many Celtic cultures. The reason Picts are usually depicted as naked and painted is because that was how they went into battle and generally speaking, that was the only time outsiders saw them.
(Detail of a Pictish brooch and a recreation of the piece available on Etsy.)
you can tell a lot about a guy by the stuff you make up in your head about him
they were right btw. you have to dig yourself out of your grave over and over again

I have been WAITING for this post! Thank you <3
my eye is twitching
Between this with Jumba and Pleakley I get to why some parts of the internet is freaking out because how lately Disney have been with letting us down with remakes but also I mean I'm very skeptical myself but also I kind of want to give it a try but then again I don't want to be disappointed
Donât watch this movie, Iâm begging. This is more than just complaining about how disney doesnât need to do live action remakes. This movie in particular has already exploited the lands of Hawaiâi by filming there and will continue to do so by promoting tourism there, which is destroying the islands and harms locals and indigenous natives who are already getting pushed out of their homes by foreigners due to tourism and gentrification.
This movie also promotes whitewashing. They casted a lightskinned wasian woman to play Nani instead of an actual indigenous Hawaiian woman. This movie is promoting the erasure of Hawaiian people getting to tell stories about themselves, thereâs not a single Hawaiian person behind the writing or directing for the production of this movie and its clear that unlike the original cartoon, itâs made with a clear lack of respect for its people.
Do not watch this movie.
I am still thinking of "ice cream guy" so it's time to talk about it. I saw a tweet about someone excited that they even included ice cream guy, and I am really glad it wasn't just me who caught the change they made, because that change, making 'ice cream guy' native, changes everything behind Lilo's motivations. I flipping love Lilo and Stitch. I was so happy that my kids enjoyed it when they saw it last year, and when my husband mentioned how much he loved Nani's lullaby, i told him about the history behind Aloha Oe, and how the movie is so good about being a movie that places Hawai'i as a real home, where real people live, and not just a backdrop to your vacation.
There's a scene cut for time from Lilo and Stitch that explicitly dealt with Lilo's experience being the backdrop to a bunch of tourists, and even though it was not in the full movie, the motive is still there. She took a picture of that white guy with his ice cream the same way people take pictures of her as "oh look honey it's a real native."
There's times when changing the race or gender or background of a character is a neutral thing. This was not a neutral act on Disney's part. This divorces Lilo's action from her motives. It leaves it hollow, not just in the way that all of these soulless live action remakes are, but in a way that removes her home from her background. What is she taking a picture of, if it's just some guy with a dropped ice cream? Why is she doing this? Why are you watching her do this? What's the point?
Do not watch this movie. Go watch the original. It's great! And if you missed that cut scene, watch that too.
