I cannot express enough that a) he dumped shanks because shanks wanted to take a break and grieve their dead captain and Buggy Don't Want No Scrubs, b) shanks proceeded to become one of the most powerful characters in the series while Buggy is and always will be a silly little jester Faking His Way to the top, and c) Shanks is still extremely obsessed with him and sees Buggy as his happy-ever-after while Buggy is incapable of THINKING about Shanks without descending into quivering fury.

The whole reason he despises Luffy so much is that Luffy reminds him of Shanks - in the Live Action at least, which is Oda-approved and digs far more into side-characters like him with full knowledge of what they'll become in the future!

It's very fun. It's been 20 years since they last dated and they still haunt each other.

anyway, since then Buggy has conned his way to the top of the world, convincing everyone that he is WAY more powerful than he is, snatching the title of Emperor by sheer LUCK (this man fails upwards and it is. hilarious.) and has gotten in an extremely toxic abusive bad-BDSM relationship with two of the series' most beloved antagonists, Mihawk and Crocodile. It's exceedingly not-fun for him and exceedingly fun for me!
