and something something about ryland, who's the closest to her, also falling into the notion that she's untouchable. he fails to see her as a person. whenever eva accepts yet another burden, he thinks of it as her strength, never as her guilt. he washed his hands off it despite being her second in command.

it's pretty obv with eva. she betrayed grace by sending him to space against his will. i believe her actions to be justified but undeniably cruel and horrible.

now with grace betraying eva in a way. he is practically the number two, the leading scientist in astrophage, and has been by eva's side whenever she makes all those hard decisions. he knows the stake present of humanity perishing if the mission fails. he knows that there's not enough time to train another scientist. he knows that the kids he so loved are going to die of starvation or coldness.

grace 'betrays' eva and the rest of humanity in that sense. he is not just a bystander. he understands the consequences and has the expertise to make the mission succeeds. and yet, he still refuses to answer the call. he chose self-preservation above all else.

from eva's perspective, grace would make her force her hand, instead of volunteering himself. that eva is once again put in a fucking dilemma (like nuking antartica and paving the sahara) but those situations differ. this is the person that she knows and trusts. but she's going to look at him straight in the eye and tell him to go on a suicide mission. doesn't she carry enough sins already? why can't grace carry some of the burden from her? a part of her prob hoped that grace can accept the responsibility of saving earth. but no. grace entered that room babbling about his kids needing him when they're all going to die anyway. she knows him to be a coward and that's what angered her. he fails to be the person eva wanted him to be. someone brave enough to sacrifice himself for humanity's only chance of survival.
