You know how few protagonists have a freeze reflex?

You know how many One Piece characters have a fight reflex? It's probably most of them (Ace, Zoro, and Kid are pretty notable examples). And after that, flight is probably next (Usopp, Nami, etc).

See a sad lonely whale? Punch it. That’s how you show affection.

Law makes a plan? Boo. That’s no fun. Ignore it.

There’s a corrupt government? Punch it. That’s how you handle problems.

Rules? Ha. What are those? No one in your entire life has ever set consistent rules and consequences for you.

Structure? Never heard of it.

Self preservation instinct? You’ve been hunting tigers since you were SEVEN YEARS OLD. When would you have developed that? Ace certainly never mentioned anything about it. Neither did Sabo when he was around. Or the Pirate crew you hung out with when you were six, or the 50 mountain bandits who sporadically took care of you, or your grandpa who visited once a month to throw you in a ravine and punch you in the face. Maaaybe the bartender tried a few times but like, she wasn’t around enough for it to stick.

The only things you lived your life by were “have fun, do what you want, punch stuff.”

(Also sometimes people just leave. They don’t stay around. You have to cling tight to them because they’re all you’ve got. Sometimes the place you play with your brothers gets set on fire, the government doesn’t care, they’ll shoot a 10 year old in a boat and it’s just you and Ace now and he’s the *only* consistent thing in your life. All you want is to make him smile because he’s so sad because the world never wanted him but dammit, you do. You want him.)
