a very funny thing about the second half of viceland season 2 is that Matt is pretty obviously being possessed by an evil hat and Jay doesn't notice. Matt has worn one specific hat the vast majority of the time Jay has known him and the appearance of a new, black hat coincides with Matt being extremely weird and squirrely. normally one would ask about the hat but this is not something Jay thinks to do because he's a very self centered and unquestioning little thing, a trait Matt has pretty much encouraged at every opportunity. this is backfiring now because on some level Matt wants Jay to ask about the hat. he wants to stop getting away with it. he wants Jay to see that Matt fucked it all up and tell him that that's okay because the Rivoli isn't actually the most important part of their friendship and Jay can set aside his care for that, because Matt doesn't need an evil hat since Jay will stay with Matt anyway.
and the funniest bit is he almost gets that except it's a funhouse mirror of it, it's the worst thing to ever happen to him ever because instead Jay basically says that it's fine and he not invested enough anymore for this to seem like the apocalypse to him like it does for Matt because he's one foot out the door and just like how Jay missed the extremely obvious hat clue, Matt somehow totally missed what he sees, and arguably they both see, as the emotional equivalent of Jay falling out of love with him.
