the thing about having an awareness of how engagement with hollywood and the bigtime etc will probably drive matt johnson insane in a new way and make him a shell of himself (this is not unique to him this is what happens to anyone interesting who gets picked up by the mighty hand of god here) is like on some level you find it very depressing because it's another example of how creative, driven, and very fascinating people will be eaten by a machine that has no goal other than to smooth down rough edges and pad out any concave sections with money, squeezing out sincerity and legitimacy for alternate use until there's nothing left and the original author is left clinging to the idea of themselves before everything. but on the other hand like, you walked into the maw willingly. you saw everyone else who told themselves they could resist it because they're special, saw them fail, and you were like, well maybe i can resist it because i'm special. and that's pathetic. but also, the reason it's so effective at snapping people up is because it's lifechanging in a way that's almost impossible for people to resist. and in a logical sense, for people in this purview to continue their work, they have to make at least some deals with the devil. there's just not another option, and the house always wins. always. you either get chased out or you capitulate. idk it's just kind of hopeless watching people slip down that slope every time. "do a flip!" i holler, content from my position wherein i've never been tempted. man it must suck to want to make movies
