i find it fascinating that this hate account decides to come for arguably one of the best gay couples in tv history in a show where many straight couples are arguably worst in the middle of pride month. and also just posting poorly thought of opinions about one of the gay characters like some of re other straight characters aren’t worst. during pride month. they should just admit they are homophobic and move on. like imagine saying mickey is “abusive” and “not redeemable” when lip the angry, misogynistic “i like to bully women + treat my girlfriends like objects/garbage” straight boy is right there.
Ngl I didn't even read a lot of it because I'd already gotten the gist of it from mutuals. But when I did locate the account just to block, a quick glimpse had me seeing that lip is their fave and Lip was right and "level headed" during he and Mickey's fight in season 11. I rolled my eyes so hard they nearly fell out.
Like, I'm not gonna say that Mickey should have taken his anger and frustration out on Lip, and I know logically that "violence is never the answer" yadda yadda blah blah blah
But.....Lip was 100% an entitled asshole for that entire plot. Selling the house was complete stupidity and utterly selfish.
The mother of his child is offered a free house, in a safe neighbourhood, where they can build a family home for their son. And Lip is like "how about an RV in my family's yard in one of the most crime-riddled streets in Chicago, I'm sure that's a great place for our infant son".
Like, I do have some sympathy for Lip in regards to maintaining his sobriety. Lip was correct when he said that such an upheaval and being away from his support system could have a negative impact on his sobriety. However, he did not actually bring that up as a valid concern or talking point until AFTER he'd already gone behind Tami's back. He had no interest in discussing options and considering any kind of middle ground. The house he rented was so close to his family home you could practically spit on it from the Gallagher porch.
When Ian and Mickey moved, they stayed in Chicago. It was far enough away to get some distance and build a life for the two of them, but still close enough to the family to keep their support systems and jobs with little to no impact on their routine. Because significant upheaval isn't good for Ian either, and Mickey also struggles with change. Lip and Tami could have considered a similar option.
Lip never actually seems to consider what is in Fred's best interest other than to want him to grow up close to his family. Their neighborhood is not safe. Living in an RV in that neighborhood is sheer stupidity.
And then he rents that house without Tami's knowledge, and when she calls him out because she wanted to "build a life together. For you, and me and Fred", Lip ends up breaking his sobriety anyway. When maintaining his sobriety was his primary reason for doing what he did in the first place.
Then he wastes time and money fixing up the rental. He could have worked side-hustles during that time. He could have saved that money to find a place he and Tami could both agree on when the lease was up. But he spent so much time and money on back splash tiles and fancy paint. And now they're gonna be homeless cos the owner is selling.
And also he picked a fight and lost his job so now they're chances of applying for a mortgage are gone. Oh and he also lied to Tami about a serious crime he committed and lied about breaking his sobriety again. Oh and once again Tami's family has offered them a place to live but Lip is too proud to take it. Oh and Lip also doesn't wanna discuss options with Tami either and freezes her out again.
Then Lip comes up with a plan that Tami seems agreeable to: sell the Gallagher house and use the money to find a place they both like. Tami is open to this because for the first time it seems that Lip will allow her to have an opinion and the lump sum of money will give them some much needed breathing room. But Tami is sceptical and tells him she doesn't think his family will go for it.
Lip brings it up to the Gallaghers. It blows up. Debbie is furious. Carl is on the fence. Liam literally runs away for over 24 hours terrified of where he's gonna live and who's gonna take him in, and he feels like he doesn't have a voice in the family because he's the only one still a child.
And they assume it was Tami's idea. And Lip lets them. Lip never corrects that. Lip throws Tami under the bus and then has the audacity to say "why can't we have a rational conversation about things for once" as if his own inability to have a rational conversation with the mother of his child isn't the whole reason he's in this mess.
And Lip's argument for selling the house is "maybe our kids could grow up some place nicer", as if he didn't turn down a perfectly good house that was nice and safe. As if he didn't force the mother of his child and their son into an RV and then a run-down house 20 feet away.
Like yeah, tensions were high, and Lip and Mickey were taking their frustrations out on each other during that fist fight. It was petty and shouldn't have happened. But Lip was not "level-headed" and hadn't been all season lmfao. I'm surprised nobody swung for him before then.
Lip thought of nobody but himself that entire time. Lip lied to Tami, kept things from Tami, potentially endangered their son, uprooted his family, committed crimes, broke sobriety twice, threw Tami under the bus, treated Debbie like shit, and was trying to act like he was the one in the right.
And I think Lip is such a fascinating and entertaining character. I think that he's a realistic depiction of wasted potential, of substance abuse, of someone who can never seem to get out of their own way. I think he's incredibly charismatic, and Jeremy is a phenomenal actor.
But the sad reality of Lip's character (especially during this arc) is also a sad reality of Mickey's character: they're both afraid of change. Because no matter how bad things are, at least the "known" is safe, is predictable, is something they've learned to live with and around. It's preferable to whatever could be waiting on the other side. Because even if the other side COULD be better, they don't KNOW that it will be. "The cage door is open. The cage is all I know."
The difference is that Mickey has spent his entire adult life so far either in prison or on the run. A permanent state of fight or flight. He literally hasn't had the time or freedom to consider what he wants and what he might be allowed to have. But he trusts Ian and wants a life with Ian, and knows that Ian HAS thought about dreams and goals and a future that Mickey never thought he'd get. So ultimately, Mickey swallows his pride, chooses to be brave, and commits to forging that life with Ian.
Lip stonewalls Tami at every turn and continuously back-slides just when he seems to be making progress.
Every character in the show is such an interesting and nuanced depiction and exploration of how the environment, upbringing, and subculture play a significant part in who people become. And how it's not easy to break the cycle.
But if you're going to specifically compare Lip with Mickey, and specifically look at Season 11 and where they both were by the end of the show, you'd have to be willfully ignorant to not see that Mickey made the most significant strides in development. Mickey has the more stable, supportive and healthy relationship. Mickey broke the cycle.
And this is not me shitting on Lip. Because though I would not like him as a person, I think he's an incredible character, and a shining example of a lot of the themes and messages the show was trying to convey. What I'm saying is just what canon gave us, and what I'm taking from it is that Lip is still stuck in that cycle, and he's not sure of his relationship lasting. My personal opinion is that Tami deserves better.
