The Escapism Is Real

(set in an au where no one was cut)

Robert

His backpack which has a lock to keep it safe. He just has essentials and spare clothes as well as other personal things but the lock is just to be safe.

He’s not dumb enough to keep the astral pulse there. Royd keeps it safe and hidden in the lab while the suit is being repaired. Robert checks in on it when he can. He does have another decoy made just in case.

Two spare SDN shirts and a towel. Things can still get messy as a dispatcher. And when interacting with Waterboy.

Some pain meds for emergencies. Chronic pains and migraines are a bitch and he likes having some on hand.

A picture of him, Chase, Blazer, and Beef. He recently added it. This replaced the picture of his dad he used to keep. Beside the new picture is a more recent picture from Prism, a picture of him and the Z-Team.

Some food for Beef. Robert keeps treats at his desk but also has a small ziplock bag of kibble for his longer shifts.

Flambae

Extra hair ties. He shares with Prism and they both tend to lose them when handling villain fights.

Hair brush. Flambae always makes sure his hair is perfect before and after missions.

Travel sized skin care products. His fire makes his skin dry up so he’s gotta stay moisturized.

Spare shades. He has yet to break his current pair but he’s ready if needs the back up one.

A small picture of his niece. It’s a small motivation to help him remember that he’s a hero now.

Prism

Hair brush. She likes looking after her hair too.

Extra hero outfit. She’s not getting caught having a wardrobe malfunction mid shift.

Mirror. For when she applies her lipstick. Plus an extra tube of her favorite lipstick. Just in case.

Power bank for her phone to charge while she’s busy with shifts. She refuses to leave her phone to charge in the locker.

Hair spray. To keep her hair nice. She has to constantly warn Flambae not to go off near her when she uses it.

Music speaker. For lunch break outside of the office or when the office parties come around and it needs some more liveliness.

Invisigal

Emergency back up inhaler in case she runs out or something happens to it.

A selfie of her and Golem. She also has a picture with prism.

Some prescription pills in case her asthma flares up and her inhaler isn’t helping.

A pack of bubble gum. She’d keep it on her but Sonar keeps trying to eat them.

A black version of her pink jacket for stealth missions. She can turn invisible but once visible, anyone can see the bright pink so she got a black one too.

A bag of sour patch gummies. She always brings once with her and eats it in between shifts. She also shares with Robert.

Sonar

An extra suit and tie. Sometimes he transforms and turns back, his suit gets wrecked completely.

He used to have a certain type of powder but soon stopped sneaking it in when he started taking his hero work a little more seriously. Plus Robert’s been helping him get clean. It’s a long progress.

Magazines on crypto currency and tech. He’s a big nerd and reads on breaks. He may have stopped actually doing crypto but he still likes reading it.

Several brushes for his fur. He had combs but they kept breaking in his tangled fur. Malevola helps him brush his fur out after missions.

A special tooth brush and paste for his fangs. He eats bugs and other things so Malevola has him brush his teeth right after. Bat breath is nasty.

Malevola

Emergency first aid kit. It’s not used since the team is tough and she can heal anyone but keeps it anyways so she doesn’t always have to use her powers. Robert uses a lot of the bandages.

She used to keep Booze in there before Robert became their dispatcher. She took it home eventually and keeps it there.

An outfit for when missions involve ice or the weather is cold. She can handle a bit of cold but even she has her limits. And Flambae isn’t always available.

Malevola doesn’t really keep much in her locker since she can just open a quick portal if she needs to grab something at home.

She does have a selfie with the girls. And one with her and Sonar.

Coupe

Polish for blades. She likes keeping her blades clean and Punch Up helps her clean each one at the end of the day.

Eye makeup. She likes touching up her makeup when it starts getting messy.

Some romantassy books. She loves her audio books but she also loves physical books and reads them on break if her tablet is charging.

Her tablet. She listens to audio books on break too.

Pins to keep her mask in place.

A picture of Punch Up. Them being heroes together really helped their relationship.

A list of enemies the team has made. She’s still a trained assassin after all. Though she promised Robert she wouldn’t kill anyone for him.

Rubbing alcohol. Bloodstains are a bitch to get off of her knives and outfit.

Punch Up

A picture of Coupe. He’s really glad they’re heroes together.

A blade from Coupe. She threw at him once and he kept it. It says ‘I love you’ in her blood on the side.

Extra hand wraps and bandages. He might be strong and dense but even his skin and muscles get achy from punching all day.

Hand gloves. For cold weather missions and to keep his hands safe. They were a custom gift from Robert.

A comb for his mustache. He likes to make it look nice and fancy. Coupe loves how cute it is.

His bag. Has emergency stuff and spare clothes.

Golem

Doesn’t actually use locker much but if he needs something, he’ll have one of the guys grabs what he needs.

A picture of his new kaiju baby. He takes fatherhood seriously.

His phone and headphones. Can’t carry it in his body or it’ll get dirty so he keeps it there.

His wallet. No place to keep it on himself during work.

There’s not much in his locker. He doesn’t need much at work as a construct.

Waterboy

A picture of his granny. He loves her very much.

An extra wet suit. In case his current suit gets wet.

Spare goggles. In case the other breaks or he loses it on a mission.

A small poster of Mecha Man and another of Phenomaman. He’s a big nerdy fan.

A picture with Robert. He got some courage and asked for a photo since they’re friends.

Anxiety meds. Waterboy struggles with anxiety and when he joined the Z-Team, he was put on meds to help with his anxiety. He does his best to take them before his damp hands dissolve them.

Nausea pills and throat lozenges. After a long day, Waterboy’s throat often ends up sore and he feels nauseous from throwing up water all day. He takes these after rough missions.

His lunch bag. His grandma makes his lunches and always packs some milk with it.

Phenomaman

He used to have a picture of Blonde Blazer but once he started getting over her, he took it down. Robert was proud of him. There’s now a picture of him with the team.

He also tried anti-depressants as a suggestion by Robert but due to his alien biology, they didn’t really do much. Therapy seems to help though.

Pamphlets on depression and dealing with break ups. Robert gave them to him to help him. He rereads it on breaks.

Books on human stuff. He’s been learning about human stuff with some encouragement from Robert. He has books on animals, art, and history. His favorite are the animal books.

An old, decrepit laundromat gets replaced by an upscale bakery? And people are mad? It’s not that the poor hate organic vegan cupcakes, it’s that most of us don’t have a way to do laundry in our own home.

Run-down corner stores replaced by hand-made designer clothing boutiques? We don’t hate your eco-fabric shawl, but I can’t eat that for dinner after work like I could have a can of beans I grabbed from that corner store when I don’t have time to take the bus to the real grocery store after work.

What gentrification brings in and of itself is not typically bad, it’s that gentrification brings institutions of leisure and pleasure and makes it so that the poor have to go farther out of their way for basic necessities. It turns low-income living spaces into local tourist attractions. It can even create food deserts by putting restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in that the majority of the lower class cannot afford.
