Anyway thatās why you wear wool and a life jacket babeeeyyyy
The important thing about wool is that it continues to keep you warm even when itās soaking wet.
Other natural fibers donāt do this. In fact, quite the opposite. Campers and boaters are usually familiar with the phrase, ācotton kills.ā If youāre wet in cotton or linen, your clothes actually sap heat from your body.
If you sink in a lake in late October like I did today, staying warm is important. I was rescued long before I wouldāve actually died, but cold makes your muscles seize up, which isnāt good if you have to swim to land.
Which brings me around to life jackets. If the waterās cold enough, you may only have five-ten minutes until your muscles seize (today I probably had 40-60, more than enough time to get to land if I hadnāt been picked up), and youāll drown.
In a life jacket, even in extremely cold water, you can float semi-conscious for perhaps another 30 minutes or so before you actually freeze to death, which is usually when someone rescues you.
Whatās more, you probably know that moving around on land warms you up. Jumping jacks, jogging in place, etc.
In water, moving actually makes you colder. You need to stay still curled up in a ball, which you can only do in a life jacket.
In wool AND life jacket, youāre warm, and your headās above water, which is pretty much your only and entire goal.
If youāre allergic to wool, synthetics are available specifically for this purpose. I know I always say natural fibers are the way to go, but when it comes to safety, wear what protects you!
Yep! A really simple āexperimentā I learned as a kid and now use in my own courses is sticking your hand in ice water. Compare moving it around in the water to curling it up in a fist. The contrast is stark!
To increase your survival time in on cold water, you want to curl up! If youāre with others, you want to huddle!
Again, both are only possible when wearing a life jacket!
I know a lot of people are reblogging this for writing reference, but I like to believe that 7,000 people on this site were actually continually living in fear about this specific situation and that when the time comes, Iāve prepared them with what they need to know to survive.

GLaDOS voice: "Would you like to see some artwork I generated? I've heard from other test subjects that AI-generated artwork produces an uncanny valley response in human viewers because they can't perceive it as fully real. They've told me that it looks absolutely hideous to them, that they can't imagine anything more disgusting than AI art. But, well I've been practicing and wanted your honest opinion. Feel free to let me know how ugly you find this by ranking it on a scale from 'vomit-inducing' to 'eye-bleeding'." A robotic arm lowers from the ceiling holding a hand mirror up to Chell's face

Hey Girl I mean All Pronouns
I've been seeing that quote go around and while making this I think I managed to track it back to "An Oresteia" by Anne Carson
the thing about the You Don't Have To Hand It To The Pope situation that makes me really insane is the sheer number of people going "oh okay so now the pope is responsible for everything bad the catholic church has ever done? all of that is his fault?ššš" as if we're talking about some random schmuck with a rosary and not the world's #1 head catholic bitch in charge in his fancy little dipshit hat sitting on a throne made of pilfered riches and the bones of people who were killed for his god. like yeah actually that guy kind of does need to be held accountable for the past and present crimes of the organization he's in charge of actually. that's sort of what being the boss entails.

Alfred J. Kwak is a cartoon about a duck that does not fuck around
Yep. This anime goes into all sorts of issues, from the sad themes of loss of family, adoption and growing up as an orphan, into far more real issues such as facism, abuse of power, apartheid and much much more. Also, the main antagonist character is literally a crow version of Adolf Hitler. Good show, gets real the more it goes on.
(and yes it is anime, it was co-produced between the Dutch and Japanese)
Weāre just halfway through the series (all of it is on youtube in at least both Dutch and English) and itās amazing how plainly it lays out these things. While newer cartoons might use vague metaphors (stuff like āthe blue aliens are mean to the green aliens, for being green!ā) Alfred J. Kwak bluntly shows exactly how things like this work.
That first three-episode arc with Dolf (the crow) rising to power did a clearer and more comprehensible job explaining how fascism occurs than any history class Iāve ever taken. The monarchy is lazy, greedy and barely more than a figurehead and here comes this very wealthy, very clever public speaker obsessed with power and petty vengeance. The more people like him the more shit he can get away with, plain and simple.
I also appreciate how the HEROES in this show will resort to trickery, sabotage, espionage, theft and more when itās truly necessary to save lives, and thereās never any āoh no, we canāt do this, weāll be just like themā bullshit. Alfred is realistic and practical about what has to be done for the greater good. Without a thought heāll break any rule, take advantage of anything possible to save innocent people. He defeats Dolf that first time by just straight-up robbing him blind of all his money so he canāt make good on any of his deals. Thatās so contrary to the morals pushed by most American media that itās no wonder it never aired here.
What you need to defeat evil in this world is not a sense of moral superiority, evil feels morally superior in what it does, what is needed is willingness. Willingness to sabotage, to violate protocols, to do and say things that will be considered galling and unsavory. You have to be willing to engage and counter evil in any fashion, at any time, however necessary. Fascism, like all evil, is built on apathy and complacency. It relies on the masses simply accepting that thereās nothing they can do, and even if there was something, they shouldnāt want to do it. To combat evil is to reject that mentality, and encourage others to do the same, donāt concern yourself with the ethics of fighting against evil. There are none, you cannot afford to restrict yourself when facing an enemy of endless might.
I think overall there will probably be devastating long term effects on the movie industry from a horror movie based on a youtube video based on a 4chan post making 7 times it's budget on opening weekend but I think the movie itself is probably preddy good
arguments that have zero merit, none, completely worthless, should not influence your decisions at all ever:
"this is how we've always done it"
"that's the policy"
"we've never tried that before"

āEbola poses 0 risk to the west, I am tired of people fear mongering about itā that is so fucking stupid I cannot reply to that in a way that is respectful and kind. it is a highly deadly infectious disease that causes you to hemorrhage internally and die painfully. it does not matter if it is killing people in the DRC or in America, it is an incredibly scary virus and a terrible way to die. you SHOULD be worried about it. there are thousands of people displaced by war without access to healthcare and sanitation and there is a virus with a 30-50% fatality rate spreading in the region. Iām not saying get in your bunker but again, I think giving a fuck about the Ebola epidemic even if it is occurring on a different continent is basic concern for humanity

i should post it here too: i wrote a long post about the practical uses of monads in haskell. in it i try to highlight how we use monads to structure our code, what benefits they bring, and how to reason about them. it comes with exercises!

Stop hitting kids. End of sentence.

YOU GOTTA BE FUCKING KIDDING ME TUMBLR
So annoying. So GD annoying.
Equivocating between "beaten with a stick" and "an open hand slap on the bottom" is the basis of all of these "findings" and is a good example of why social sciences are just propaganda wearing academia as a skinsuit.
Hey fucking abusive dumb ass fascist--if your misunderstanding here wasn't so high stakes (you're advocating for hurting kids Real Grade A You Should Totally Abuse Kids comment) how much you've misunderstood this research is almost comedy.
Let me help you: it's actually saying that it DOESN'T MATTER if it's "light" physical abuse....the outcomes are ALL NEGATIVE. That's the point. Outcomes = bad from all types of "corporal punishment." 100% NO positivity comes from hitting kids. Period. Point blank.
What you personally consider to be "tee hee cutesy just for kids it's so light and itty bitty abuse" doesn't matter.
Hitting your kids will harm them.
If you can reply so fundamentally "my head is up my own ass DEEP" in the face of an overwhelming amount of evidence against your views, there's literally nothing I can do for you and I wish you a very blocked.
It's wild to me that the response to literal decades of research is always some flavour of 'well, I'm hitting my kids the *right way* so this doesn't apply to me š„°'
Why do people want to hurt their children so fucking badly?
