For Black fans, watching Black players win can feel like their own victory. “It’s like a very long-distance family reunion,” said Greg Jackson, an Atlanta-based co-host of “For The Culture UTD” podcast, about watching games with fans across the Black diaspora. “Being able to see that all up close. This feels like this is a part of me.”

During matches, players scoring goals can unite people under one identity –– but it can also bring out the worst in humans, particularly toward Black players and fans.

After the Argentina vs. Cape Verde match, FIFA, soccer’s global governing body, said it was investigating an incident in which racist abuse appeared to be shouted at Black U.S. YouTuber Darren Jason Watkins Jr., better known by his handle “IShowSpeed,” by a supporter in the stands. In a separate incident, Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla posted a since-deleted racist screed against France’s Kylian Mbappé. Mbappé later condemned her as a “despicable woman” that is “unworthy” of her position.

Kyle Carr, a Wisconsin-based soccer fan, said he expects what happened to IShowSpeed to happen to other Black fans in the stands too. “It’s just really upsetting that he faces that in the biggest stage,” he said.

The nox live underground because they were banished there and sought to create a new night sky. They have literal black/gray skin. That feels like oversimplification, but the rest of the information you can put together isn’t really relevant here.

The recluse lives deep in “the woods” (vague gesturing but explicitly above ground), she is a witch, she does not have literal black skin, but brown skin (albeit very ashy, unfortunately the reliance on desaturated colors ends up making skin tones look bad imo)

You could argue that the darkness skin/costume gives her a v dark blue tone but this Also doesn’t work because 1. No cosmetics change the race of the character. 2. Barring I think revenant and wylder, the darkness skins give unnatural skin tones- duchess becomes pink/purple, scholar literally is fully silver, etc.

No, I want to highlight the actual issues with recluse that are racist and colorist- she tends to be motherly and supportive of the white cast in their own stories, w the only exception being guardians (notably not human) story, which has her as the cause of his people becoming cursed. While it frames her as sympathetic in the way she helps him learn about it you still have the option to “murder” (he doesn’t go through with it but he hits her) and that’s fucked up.

She has a supporting character that is LITERALLY JUST HER MODEL with a recolored dress. This isn’t the only case in the game, as ironeye and revenant also reuse their models for their stories, but ironeye’s group seems to operate under uniforms, while revenant is a doll who resembles her owner (which tends to be a trend re: bloodbornes doll). These two have in-universe explanations, while recluse kind of doesn’t? The witch of the wheel is called her sister, but the phrasing doesn’t suggest this is literally her sister, nor that they are connected beyond being in the same coven.

In general elden ring and nightreign are very colorist and racist when it comes to which characters get darker skin tones- a lot of the rougher characters get darker skin. Recluse is a lot softer but I think still falls under this given her story and guardian’s.

Just in case: I love these games dearly (they’re my current hyperfixations) they’re fun but I think that any media has a habit of courting antiblackness bc it’s a global and deeply ingrained issue, and I think it’s good practice to analyze the things you love because none of it is infallible

Pilots and other transportation workers have absurd hours of service requirements that start your rest period as “the moment you shut the vehicle down” and can be as short as 9 hours in some cases.

Railroad workers have to be available on-call 6 days a week and be ready within two hours notice. They don’t get sick time.

Retail workers have to keep a veneer of politeness against any and all abuse or they can be fired.

Truck drivers get paid by mileage and rarely see pay for shipper or receiver delays.

In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:

This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.
