Soccer can unite people across the world â but also bring out the worst in them.
"The World Cup is a global stage for Black excellence that has led to unforgettable moments, like Cape Verdeâs goalkeeper Vozinha becoming a national hero and Franceâs Kylian MbappĂŠ dominance.
For Black fans, watching Black players win can feel like their own victory. âItâs like a very long-distance family reunion,â said Greg Jackson, an Atlanta-based co-host of âFor The Culture UTDâ podcast, about watching games with fans across the Black diaspora. âBeing able to see that all up close. This feels like this is a part of me.â
During matches, players scoring goals can unite people under one identity ââ but it can also bring out the worst in humans, particularly toward Black players and fans.
After the Argentina vs. Cape Verde match, FIFA, soccerâs global governing body, said it was investigating an incident in which racist abuse appeared to be shouted at Black U.S. YouTuber Darren Jason Watkins Jr., better known by his handle âIShowSpeed,â by a supporter in the stands. In a separate incident, Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla posted a since-deleted racist screed against Franceâs Kylian MbappĂŠ. MbappĂŠ later condemned her as a âdespicable womanâ that is âunworthyâ of her position.
Kyle Carr, a Wisconsin-based soccer fan, said he expects what happened to IShowSpeed to happen to other Black fans in the stands too. âItâs just really upsetting that he faces that in the biggest stage,â he said.
To share the range of experiences, HuffPost asked a variety of Black fans to share the unique joys and frustrations with being a Black soccer fan during this yearâs World Cup."
Black Fans Share The Radical Joys And Frustrations Of Watching This Year's World Cup, by Monica Torres
It's been rough, even from the outside, but there's been a lot of joy, too! I been rooting for everybody Black, and I will continue to do so đЎ
RADICAL JOY INDEED!!!
âwe need a word for unintentional racismâ yeah bitch the word is racism. yaâll cut tf up.
2026 world cup final
here's two articles about how JK Rowling just posted on X an upskirt photo of Freda Wallace, a transgender woman, after deadnaming her and misgendering her repeatedly online.
The wealthy author escalated a social media spat that resulted in posting a photo from a 2023 event at the Institute of Economic Affairs in
Rowling posted the picture taken from below because the trans woman, she said, was "refusing to debate me."
Thank you for posting without the fucking destiel meme
So in summation; Rowling demanded access to a womanâs time and when she couldnât get it she retaliated by posting an upskirt image of her and called her fat, and some of her fans even went âI think I can see her genitalsâ.
She literally went âdebate me! Debate me!â Over and over like the grifter she is and when she couldnât get what she wanted and when ânoâ wasnât enough she resorted to retaliatory sex-pestery, posting an image of somebodyâs body with intention to shame and embarrass and spawn more waspish tittering from her internet followers.
Rowling is trash and this is disgraceful behavior, in case anyone has forgotten.
She had also claimed Freda "deserved" this sexual harassment because of what she was wearing... You know... The same excuse used over and over to try and justify rape.
No person (trans or otherwise) is obliged to debate anyone for any reason. When they refuse to do so you should take it as a 'no.'
One would THINK that a 'figurehead of women's rights' would understand that 'no means no'... But according to JKR it apparently mean 'sexually harass and verbally abuse them on twatter.'

Mmmmmmmm Iâm having thoughts on nightreign re: recluse.
someone mentioned to cbc sheâs not Black but Nox but this is untrue? (This was some time ago but I remembered it suddenly)
But guess who has 700+ hours in both nightreign and elden ring! Me!!! I do!!!! And I know some things!!
The nox live underground because they were banished there and sought to create a new night sky. They have literal black/gray skin. That feels like oversimplification, but the rest of the information you can put together isnât really relevant here.
The recluse lives deep in âthe woodsâ (vague gesturing but explicitly above ground), she is a witch, she does not have literal black skin, but brown skin (albeit very ashy, unfortunately the reliance on desaturated colors ends up making skin tones look bad imo)
You could argue that the darkness skin/costume gives her a v dark blue tone but this Also doesnât work because 1. No cosmetics change the race of the character. 2. Barring I think revenant and wylder, the darkness skins give unnatural skin tones- duchess becomes pink/purple, scholar literally is fully silver, etc.
No, I want to highlight the actual issues with recluse that are racist and colorist- she tends to be motherly and supportive of the white cast in their own stories, w the only exception being guardians (notably not human) story, which has her as the cause of his people becoming cursed. While it frames her as sympathetic in the way she helps him learn about it you still have the option to âmurderâ (he doesnât go through with it but he hits her) and thatâs fucked up.
She has a supporting character that is LITERALLY JUST HER MODEL with a recolored dress. This isnât the only case in the game, as ironeye and revenant also reuse their models for their stories, but ironeyeâs group seems to operate under uniforms, while revenant is a doll who resembles her owner (which tends to be a trend re: bloodbornes doll). These two have in-universe explanations, while recluse kind of doesnât? The witch of the wheel is called her sister, but the phrasing doesnât suggest this is literally her sister, nor that they are connected beyond being in the same coven.
In general elden ring and nightreign are very colorist and racist when it comes to which characters get darker skin tones- a lot of the rougher characters get darker skin. Recluse is a lot softer but I think still falls under this given her story and guardianâs.
Just in case: I love these games dearly (theyâre my current hyperfixations) theyâre fun but I think that any media has a habit of courting antiblackness bc itâs a global and deeply ingrained issue, and I think itâs good practice to analyze the things you love because none of it is infallible
Of course I will always defer to Black fans and likewise other fans of color (being white means I could be way off on these things but Ive been reading on these things a lot in part thanks to cbc) and I genuinely wanna discuss this stuff bc I think itâs productive!
@creatingblackcharacters I hope itâs okay to share with you! I had been thinking of elden ring and nightreign when a while ago you had talked about it w some people, but there was some misinformation that was a lil too layered and out of context, so I tried to include accurate information with context!
As a reminder, itâs this character:
Renders make her v ashy when in game itâs a lot more clear:
(Second is. The recolor but the skin tone is the same. So I think itâs worth adding, esp since you can see how egregious it is.)
All these industries with shortages of workers and they canât figure out why.
Im proposing the hypothesis that the reason we donât have enough doctors/pilots/bus drivers/etc is that maybe, just maybe, having your entire industry function as a lifelong hazing ritual isnât the best recruiting strategy.
Doctors are subject to 8 years of post-secondary education and are forced to work 48 hour shifts.
Pilots and other transportation workers have absurd hours of service requirements that start your rest period as âthe moment you shut the vehicle downâ and can be as short as 9 hours in some cases.
Railroad workers have to be available on-call 6 days a week and be ready within two hours notice. They donât get sick time.
Retail workers have to keep a veneer of politeness against any and all abuse or they can be fired.
Truck drivers get paid by mileage and rarely see pay for shipper or receiver delays.
Work should not be designed to make you a miserable burnout and yet here we are.

In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:
Taylor Farms Earthbound Farms Little Salad Bar (Aldi) Marketside (Walmart) Kroger House Brand Target private label greens Costco salads and greens etc Trader Joe's chopped salad kits and fresh produce Fast food: McDonalds, Taco Bell, (Yum! Brands), Chipotle, Subway, Pizza Hut, KFC, Olive Garden, Top Golf, Red Lobster, Burger King, etc.
This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.
We need a fully funded and staffed FDA, and regulations with teeth - and that's exactly what we don't have under Trump. To make things worse, the CDC is no longer tracking these outbreaks. We're on our own.
