Lily and Remus are so so precious to me. They are soulmates. They love each other so unconditionally. I also really enjoy writing Lily - IMO (and no shade to anyone who hcs this) I don't like portrayals of her as a joyless rule follower. She's a younger sibling. She's a menace. She's creative. She's honest to a fault. She stands up for what she believes in every time, even against the people she loves, and she holds people to account, but that doesn't mean she cares about the rules or petty shit. Also, she's judgemental and dismissive and self-superior. She's just a very real person to me and I wanted that to be reflected in this fic. Her and James work for me as a fun dynamic in this fic bc they're both a little brash and arrogant. They both love to double down.

And, Oh Xan, he's my baby. I guess the main thing I wanted to focus on with him is the idea of someone who really embodies that happy-go-lucky sensibility while also being in the absolute trenches. I think he's a great foil to Sirius, who really struggles with and externalises all his pain. And Remus, who really digests and internalises all his. Xan is sort of this third thing that I feel doesn't get as much exposure bc it's not as narratively juicy, which is like. The person who just embraces their shit and deals. He goes through it, he doesn't let it get to him. It hurts him but it would hurt him more to betray himself in the name of survival.

I also feel like he really craves the admiration that he gets from Remus, who looks up to him in a way that paints him in a more flattering light than he really feels he deserves. He likes being the person who has all the wisdom to dispense.

I'm not sure how I came up with him really. I just knew I wanted Remus in with the local hoodlums because that's always just a fun trope. And I had this image of this happy, toothy, savvy kid who can just move through life with this ease about him that doesn't really show how much he's struggled.
