“So, Mr. Spock, you want the good news or the bad news?” Jim’s voice seemed far too amused for their current predicament. Spock had insisted they needed to make the rendezvous point if they had any chance of getting within range of the Enterprise’s ability to teleport them, before the system’s solar maxim rendered a rescue, far too dangerous to attempt.

The last information Chief Engineer Scott had given them, which confirmed Spock’s analysis, was that the star’s activity would increase exponentially for the next 72 hours, and hunkering down underground would be the safest way to ride out the solar storm.

How could there be good news?

“I fail to see why Humans find it necessary to delay all pertinent information required to ones survival, by an arbitrary standard of ‘good’ or ‘bad’ news.” Spock had responded, casting serious doubt on whatever put the smirk on Jim’s face.

Spock watched the moment Jim chose to ignore his rebuff.

“Good news is, the water in this cave is drinkable.” Jim responded, pushing a hand through his damp hair. Spock suddenly became aware of the fact that it wasn’t just sweat dripping off of Jim’s body. “The bad news is, it smells and tastes like Keenser’s feet.”
