Remember how it started as 14 days?
FUN FACT!
I was working as a contact tracer during the pandemic. I was in a supervisor position, so I'd be on calls with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), who would relay to us what the CDC's current guidance was. And when the 5 Day Isolation thing came out, all of us asked "but is it safe? Is there any guidance that suggests people are less likely to infect others?" Their answer was "no, but businesses need workers, and this is about people getting back to work faster."
I know a lot of people think that the 5 Day Isolation must have come about because of some new scientific discovery that 10 days was too long, or new strains don't last as long, and blatantly no. THIS DECISION WAS NEVER MADE TO KEEP YOU SAFE. THIS DECISION HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT MONEY.

girls really are expected to concentrate and work on a laptop when it is connected to the internet and all the shiny little images and videos that are always luring them in are right there....
Neurotypicals will be like âI know you have a disability that affects your ability to stay organized, manage your time properly, socialize, or control what youâre able to think about or focus on, but thatâs not an excuse to have trouble staying organized, managing your time properly, socializing, or controlling what you need to think about or focus on.â And then demand that they arenât ableist. Iâm tired.
..... FUCKING LITERALLY.

Please be aware of this double standard.
Freddie Highmore was nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Shaun Murphy on The Good Doctor.
Now, as an autistic person, I think heâs done a great job of playing a character who is his own individual person. Shaun Murphy has a distinct personality as well as a past, aspirations, motivations, wants, needs and flaws. He doesnât feel to me like a really bad cookie cutter of ârandom senseless behavior because hey this character is autisticâ that tends to plague actors who play autistic characters. Scenes from Shaunâs POV show what drives his behaviors and tendencies. The âsavantâ stuff appears to be a really good memory and may also be his visual thinking, which is often portrayed by showing him mentally assembling or disassembling things.
I know the writers and crew are neurotypicals, but it feels like theyâre really doing homework instead of showing what they *think* autism is. Freddie said in a Facebook Q & A that autistic consultants are helping with the show, so there is that. (Now letâs get the whole bunch away from Autism Speaks, blaaaah!)
The showâs creators stated that Shaun is supposed to just be Shaun, not a representative of all of autism everywhere. Everybody presents their autism a little bit differently, so of course Shaun may or may not remind you of you or an autistic person you know. I happen to share similar autistic traits to him, such as clasping my hands together (done that all my life!) and the way Shaun moves his body is similar to how I move mine.
But there is a double standard out there that NTAB* people often engage in regarding autistic / disabled people. Iâm going to say âautisticâ a lot below, but you can imagine âdisabledâ is there, too. Please take note of what Iâm pointing out.
Neurotypicals who pretend to be autistic for movies or your TV screens get rewarded for acting in a way unnatural to them, and their âautismâ disappears as soon as the director yells âCut!â
Actual autistic people who behave their normal way are judged, bullied, called cringey, excluded, are shut away and some of us get abused and murdered by our caregivers.Â
Nobody yelling âCut!â is going to make autistic people stop being autistic. We are often forced to act neurotypical via damaging therapies, and those of us trapped in a 24 / 7 acting job never see any reward for it.
We, as autistic people, have to listen to parents saying they wish we were never born or how they wish they could change us to be the person they âwantedâ instead of who we are. We have to hear about people longing to cure and prevent us. We have to listen to charities talk about what tragedies we are and how burdensome we are on our families. We deal with being dismissed, spoken over, ignored and silenced.
Somebody can play us on TV and get rewarded and lauded for it, but us being ourselves is something to mock and destroy.
This is the truth any time an able-bodied actor takes on the role of a disabled person. It sends a message that disability is only acceptable if it can go away as soon as a director yells âCut!â
We live in a society that rewards people who pretend to be autistic for entertainment, but shuns actually autistic people in the real world.
Itâs a very dangerous double standard.Â
Please be aware of it.

Can we please please normalize subtitles?Â
Subtitles are:
1. A necessity for deaf people
2. REALLY helpful for those who are partially deaf, have APD (like me and my sister) or any other hearing problem
3. really helpful for those who canât focus well, especially for those with ADD/ADHD (like me)
4. Is incredibly helpful for people learning a second language, or for bilingual people who can read better than they can hearÂ
5. Even if you arenât into learning the language, there are countless amazing foreign movies and songs you really canât enjoy without subtitles!
6. Can help people (like my sister) who have reading comprehensionÂ
7. Can help when youâre having a party and you donât want to pause every time someone wants to make a comment/joke
8. Can help when the characters in the show have a heavy accent (especially in period shows)Â
9. Letâs be honest subtitles can really add to the humor of the show! (âsobs mathematicallyâ, âscreeches loudlyâ, âangrily fixes bowtieâ)
10. Can let people watch content without headphones, or in areas of loud noises.Â
11. Alternatively, If someone has sensitive hearing or is triggered by loud noises, they can turn the volume down low and still be able to enjoy the content
12. The last bit is VERY true for movies where they switch between soft speaking and LOUD BOOMING NOISES (Iâm looking at you hunger games)
13. Very good for helping young kids recognize and associate words and learn to read faster!
14. Really good when youâre eating chips/crunchy candy and canât hear the movie
15. IS A NECESSITY FOR DEAF PEOPLE!!!
I canât even tell you how many of my friends made fun of me for needing subtitles, to the point of where I just donât bother with them anymore. Asking for subtitles at an event is the scariest thing I can imagine. People often complain that it âgets in the wayâ of their movie. Watching shows (especially in loud areas or with people who talk a lot) is incredibly frustrating for me. People often think Iâm stupid for not understanding a show or needing to rewind when someone talks. Most Youtube users donât bother to create subtitles for their videos (and auto-generated subtitles are crap). I just wish people were nicer to people who need subtitles, and that they were more accessible on other platforms.Â
My mom is unilaterally deaf, but weâve used subtitles since long before any hearing problems occurred. Sometimes the dialog-to-music ratio is off as fuck in the master, and subtitles help to balance that.
subtitles are also super helpful for autistic people! i have auditory processing disorder, so sometimes itâs like i hear everything a second or two after itâs said. subtitles are very helpful so i can read the dialogue while my ears catch up
This might be an unpopular opinion but I love subtitles, I almost always leave them on. Reading the subtitles helps me to catch every word the characters say (because letâs be real, sometimes actors can be hard to understand especially when thereâs background music). With subtitles you really get to appreciate the writing of a show along with the performances, and you catch a lot of little things you may not otherwise. Not to mention they are obviously super helpful to the deaf, hard of hearing, and so many other people! Itâs so important to normalize high-quality subtitles for tv and web content
Person: "Don't say you hate life" Me: "Fuck off"
Telling me to not hate life or to not hate myself might seem like a good idea but it just makes me bottle up those feeling instead of feeling like I can openly talk about them, this is how I cope with my depression I need to say these things out loud so they arnt ramming around in my brain. So let me just fucking be me!
