Preface: Do I still read the books? Yes. Do I still enjoy most of them? Depending on the series, also yes. Now that we got that out of the way... Also, there's spoilers. Obviously.
Rant #2: The Crossover was a terrible idea.
I'll admit that after finishing HOSAB, I was intrigued by the concept of a Crossover. After all, SJM did weave distinct connects with the ability to world fall in KoA. Then we had the brief :wink wink nudge nudge: Rhys cameo in KoA and then Aelin mentioned as a red falling star in ACOSF. Then the Daglan were obviously the Asteri.
Okay, cool. I can see those direct connections.
When I read HOFAS though, boy was I surprised at what an absolute dumpster fire of a book that was. Nothing about it was good. Even Ruhn and Lidia's story was reduced in a way that was utterly unsatisfying (see @hlizr50's Ao3 page for a RuhnLidia story that is the opposite of HOFAS slop).
And, as someone who had some of her crossover theories come true, it was still garbage. So, let's stop the blaming on the theories, okay? It wasn't a good book. It wasn't even a fun book. But that's what happens when you rewrite an entire 800+ page book in 5 weeks. Also, her editor that suggested this was "a SJM book" needs to be held accountable. There's another rant in there about how long these books are becoming, but that's for later.
The entire Prythian part held no meaning except for a terrible, extended exposition by a hologram, an uninspired spelunking adventure with Nesta and Azriel, a fight with a worm that was supposedly rare, and weapons swapping. It's just an outline with one event after another, a video game with endless side quests and no actual plot. (that last battle scene, and most of her battles, is another rant for another time...)
But you know what it did? It made HOFAS a preorder titan simply because the ACOTAR girlies who weren't sure about CC had a reason to read it. Because now they are intertwined, to both their detriment. But, hey, Bloomsbury made their preorder money, right? Except that after people reviewed their disappointment, sales went down, and now I see more HOFAS in used and discounted stores than any other SJM book.
I had hoped that waiting for years would alleviate my fears for the next ACOTAR books. Maybe she's taking her time and trying to fix the timeline discrepancy she idly tossed into HOFAS and completely changed the beginnings of The Prison from a history she'd already established previously. Unfortunately, I fear that she hasn't.
From the CHD interview, it seems like my greatest fears are going to come to fruition; that this series is going to become just CC pt 2. I have little doubt we're going to see more Crossover bullshit and meandering as opposed to dealing with the problems and relationships meaningfully.
ACOTAR was always a romance series with a fantasy side plot. That's why 1 to 2 POVs works so well here because it's character-driven. ToG was more fantasy with a side of romance. Honestly, I can't even fucking tell you what CC became, but I thought HOSAB was the sweet spot. But it's clear to me that when she hints at multiple POVs in the last ACOTAR books, we're in trouble. Who knows, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised, but in the meantime, Debbie Downer mode is activated.
Speaking of The Crossover:
Rant #3: SJM is not Taylor Swift, and any connection prior to ToD (at the earliest), is just retconning.
In the Christina Lauren interview, SJM admitted to having the vision of the end of HOEAB during the press tour for Heir of Fire. While she admitted to occasionally working on it in the background for years while she was working on ACOTAR and ToG, CC was never necessarily meant to be published.
She also admitted that the Easter Eggs in ToG and ACOTAR were a fun way to connect them into the same universe, but she also admitted that she never thought of connecting even ToG and ACOTAR "until near the end of ToG," thus Aelin falling through the worlds.
A direct crossover wasn't even a glimmer of hope until that moment. That's why the only clear direct lines of connection aren't until HOEAB and ACOSF.
So when I see people making these theory videos pulling from earlier books, I shake my head. Gurl, what?
There were no direct connections placed in those books as she was writing them that were part of a crossover scenario. Oh, she used the same type of wording? YES, THAT'S WHAT SHE DOES. Mate language is the same. Sometimes power language is the same. It's not because it necessarily is the same, but because she utilizes words in her vocabulary over and over. Oh, there's a Briar and a BRIAR? Listen, SJM isn't great at naming things either, and she reuses a LOT of things over and over again. But STARLIGHT! She uses starlight as a descriptor in varying ways approximately 423 TIMES throughout the 3 series (164 in ACOTAR, 102 in ToG, and 157 in CC). Sometimes vocab is just vocab (although, thankfully, her use of incarnate, both correct and incorrect, has ceased). Theories can be fun when based on actual connections, but good fucking god, some of them are just so wildly out there for clicks it's almost embarrassing.
I'm going to be real. Sarah Janet Maas is not some literary genius who has cleverly crafted a coherent, interconnected crossover universe. SEE HOFAS for details. She's taking the teeny bits of crumbs in the Easter Eggs, trying to fit square pegs into round holes, and making it look like she did it from jump with intention, even though her own damn interviews tell the opposite story. This is all an elaborate retcon straight from the source.
Preface: Do I still read the books? Yes. Do I still enjoy most of them? Depending on the series, also yes. Now that we got that out of the way...
Rant #1: Bloomsbury and SJM are being messy with the fandom
Like most people, I was excited to hear about the new release being announced on the CHD podcast. Odd choice for an announcement, but sure.
As I watched it, I couldn't help but find it quite performative in comparison to when she used to do lives with Steph post book release. There she felt real and natural. Relatable. On CHD, you can tell the questions were preapproved.
Then, finally, after an hour, we reached the moment of truth and got the announcement of not 1 but 2 books. That's it. Not to say it isn't something, but with the shipwar and all that jazz, and considering Sarah Janet has been silent on this for years, all it got from me was an "Oh."
No titles. No couples. Nothing except that the next 3 are one continuous vibing story with hinted multiple povs route (which in itself is ANOTHER RANT I'll post later).
And let the record state that the CHD podcast was entitled "The Wait is Over," while all of us are now waiting 2.5 months for any other news. All we've gotten are some dumb Maasverse shitposts from the 'geniuses' over at the Bloomsbury social network.
I don't believe an author is beholden to their fanbase to interact on socials or anything. It's a treat, and if they need to create space for mental health, I'm all for that. But Bloomsbury has zero excuse. They have barely mentioned ACOTAR in the 5 years we've been waiting for the next installment. YES, I know you're going to say, "But, mystical-blaise, we also got 2 Crescent City books in that time." Sure. Fine. Again, another rant I'll go on at a different time.
In that same time frame, Bloomsbury dropped the ball on several opportunities to engage the fandom: the tenth anniversary of ToG and the tenth anniversary of ACOTAR. Sure, there was a new ToG boxset, but I'm still honestly still not sure if those covers are AI (mostly due to them using AI generated images on the UK covers of CC via Adobe Stock), so I didn't bother purchasing them.
Then for ACOTAR, when they could have really gone all out, especially if they knew these were coming out, all we got was terrible dull black 'special edition' with nothing special. Literally nothing special. It would have taken me 5 minutes TOPS per cover to desaturate and get the text ready for foil. After what they lost previously, I think they expected max profit for the cheapest editions possible to recoup any losses.
Now Bloomsbury is expecting people, in this economy, to shell out $60+ in the span of 3 months to preorder based on placeholder covers with no other information?
To top that off, the only reason SJM has an interested fandom right now is because the creative community kept it alive for YEARS. And what do they get in return right before the announcement? Most of them lost their licensing because her management team is going to venture into retail. This was such a terrible move and a gut-punch to the fandom that kept her characters in the forefront while she did...things.
I'm fine with people making money, but this whole situation has just left a bad taste in my mouth and is absolutely not a good look for SJM or Bloomsbury.
Hey everyone.
I know that I've been MIA on fics and general updates, but I promise I'm working on it.
One big reason that life has been so chaotic is, not just because of kids and life and my own varying health issues over the last few months, but because my dad is battling cancer. Other than some random treatment issues and side effects, he's doing well, but it's been hard to get into a productive headspace. I'm very lucky that I also live very close to my parents and can help out, including but not limited to taking their dog during long hospital visits. It's no burden taking the husky, but I will admit she is needy and has the best RBF I've ever encountered.
Because the current administration has decided to cut critical cancer research funding, this month I've chosen to raise money for the #americancancersociety by doing what I love for one of the people I love most. Even reading has been hard lately, but I'm bound and determined.
If you'd like to support my journey, you can follow me on Instagram as I post updates. If you feel inclined to donate, you can do so here. Any support, financial or spiritual, is appreciated.
Just popping back on here to say @booksnwriting is back on her bullshit again.
Honestly, she's a stain on the entire gwynriel community.
And, of course, because that's all she knows how to do, she decided to make a post to point at one of my dear friends on Instagram because she called her out for her trash takes (this one was a word salad on my friend's comment about hating Lidia and then Rhys slander...not as egregious as her calling Rhys a fucking sex worker. Still can't forget that one. So yeah, it's cAnOn that your takes ARE trash, babe), and then made a post on her own page about it with a screenshot from my friend's page.
Report the post on Instagram if you can, then block. I reported before blocking her because I don't need her special brand of toxic stupidity in my life.

Booksnwriting you are almost 30 years old spending your friday night ranting about why a man who was literally forced to have sex for basic rights “wasn’t raped” all for 4 likes on tumblr. You are the epitome of a loser grow the fuck up.
Anyways
“Rhys wasn’t raped”
“Rhys wasn’t raped”
“Rhys wasn’t raped”
“Rhys wasn’t raped”
“Rhys wasn’t raped”
Rape is both emotional and physical
Look, I don't normally like to, you know, point out people directly, but holy fucking shit. Rhys wasn't raped? And apparently, sex workers can't be victims of assault? Trying to LIKEN HIS ABUSE to sex work? What an absolutely hideous take that this pretentious bitch tries to justify with CaNoN to back her up?! Sorry not sorry, your takes are absolute trash. I already knew from theories this girl was batshit crazy but dear god. Isn't it time we cancel this nutjob? Straight to fandom jail.
i will say, I do love that this is one point and one person where all Elriels, Gwynriels, and Eluciens can ban together to, you know, ban.
I'm not sure if it's personal growth or depression, but I don't even know of I care about the next ACOTAR book at this point.
It'll be nice if it's Gwynriel. I'll totally read it. But there are literally over 400 non-SJM books on my TBR and it's been... really nice reading other things.
Like, instead of rereading ACOTAR or Throne of Glass for the tenth time, try reading the Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh. It's where SJM got a LOT of her inspiration.
Read the Defy the Night series by Brigid Kemmerer. Read War of Lost Hearts by Carissa Broadbent. Read The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon. Read the Myths of Airren series by Jenny Hickman. Read the YA books by JLA.
There are literally SO MANY BOOKS OUT THERE. Books that we could be reading instead of fixating on a book that might exist in the next two years and fighting about who it's going to be about.
After the unmitigated disaster that was HOFAS, I'll gladly wait a fucking decade for her to write something better. I'm begging you, SJM.
But, yeah, read and discover other authors.
Is your genre Fantasy/Romantasy? Carissa Broadbent. Mai Corland. Rebecca Ross. Brigid Kemmerer.
And if you love PNR? JR Ward, Lara Adrian, and Nalini Singh. Lux and Dark Elements by JLA (HER YA BOOKS ONLY...sorry not sorry).
A contemporary girlie who likes a blend of humor and heart? Jay Crownover, Kylie Scott, Lauren Asher, JLA (Wait for You series)
For those in their hockey romance era? Elle Kennedy, Teagan Hunter, Avery Keelan, Hannah Grace, Julia Connors, Andi Burns, Peyton Corrine, Nikki Hall.

It was more than mere sleeplessness. No, it was a bone-deep, soul-crushing exhaustion, beneath the weight of her sacrifice and the abject terror that she would close her eyes and lose everything again. She didn’t regret the choices she’d made. She would do it all again, if it meant that her people would survive.
If it meant that he would survive.
She hadn’t spared a thought for what might happen after. The impossibility of the notion made the consideration an exercise in futility, and a temptation to somehow find another way. But how could she cling to her life as she’d known it when the very future was at stake?
And so she’d paid the price - not with her life, but with her very soul and self. With only a blind faith that the man who meant more to her than nearly anything would understand and forgive her.
The Goddess must have taken pity on her, because her eyes had miraculously fluttered open once more, to the most heart-rending cerulean stare, her body wrapped in the warmth of an unyielding embrace.
Link’s gentle touches had been a near constant comfort since she woke. She couldn’t quite wrap her mind around how many days had passed, her insomnia-addled brain growing more muddled every minute. But the tender brush of battle-calloused fingers was never far. It was as if the hero needed the constant reminder that she was real. That she was at his side.
Truth be told, she was glad for the reminder herself.
Still, her guard’s constant vigilance made it more and more difficult to hide the drag of her feet over the dirt paths of Hateno, her meager appetite, and the bruises of sleeplessness below her bleary gaze.
Goddess bless the nights when he slept soundly, and she could slide her trembling form out of bed, pad down the stairs, and sit herself at the table with a candle, her beloved texts, and the blank parchment where she would write and write and write in an effort to keep the oblivion of sleep at bay. The night before, he’d woken calling her name, and it had nearly killed her to hear the agony that cracked his typically soft voice. Then the stark relief that filled his eyes when she’d appeared at his bedside, whispering brokenly that she was there.
The guilt that consumed her when she lied to him - when she’d shrugged and simply explained that she couldn’t sleep, and that was why she was at the bed’s edge and not in it… It was slowly slicing her open, bleeding her dry.
”Zelda.”
She nearly flew from her seat, even though the voice was just as warm and comforting as it had always been. And, yet, there was something else there. Something deep and determined that kept her from lifting her gaze to meet his. She was afraid of what she might see.
”Are you unable to sleep, Link?” Goddess, her voice was shrill as she pushed back from the table and rose to her feet. “Let me whip up a draught for you, so you can —“
His fingers seared her skin where he caught her elbow before she could scurry to the hearth and avoid the intensity of his questioning eyes. Still, she refused to look at him. She was not the courageous one, after all.
”Zelda, please.”
She couldn’t bear the way his plea scraped over her flesh. She was hurting him, and that was the last thing she ever wanted. But she was just so incredibly afraid.
Link’s fingertips were heartbreakingly gentle on her jaw, turning her face to him. And when she saw the shimmer of concern in his crystal blue depths, her own eyes began to burn.
”You’re not sleeping,” he murmured, scouring her face for answers, for any hint to her troubles. Her answering smile wasn’t nearly as convincing as she wanted it to be.
”Not tonight, but —“
”Not since you came back.”
The strangled whimper that crawled out of her throat was that of a wounded animal cornered by the startling realization that he knew everything that she’d been desperate to hide. The bitter taste of self-reproach burned upon her tongue as her eyes filled with tears. How gloriously stupid of her, to think he wouldn’t notice. Link, the man who had spent years by her side, whose talent for quiet observation had molded him into a brilliant strategist and an even more incredible friend.
He had always seen more of her than she’d ever meant to show.
She loved him for it.
The princess stared into those piercing eyes as the silence suffocated her. Her greatest fear before swallowing the stone had been that Link would never forgive her. He would understand why it was necessary - he was too good and too honorable not to. And she had every confidence that he would be victorious over the Demon King. But would he be alright? Would the times they’d shared be enough for him to know how completely he’d captured her heart? Would those last moments, her reaching out to him, be a source of comfort, or of anguish?
Now, after finally being forced to gaze back at the man she’d given everything to protect, all she could see was concern and confusion and a tenderness so deep she could hardly comprehend it.
The pad of his thumb brushed over the apple of her cheek, wiping away the tears that had begun to fall, traitors that they were. His other hand released her arm and moved, cupping her face.
”My princess,” he breathed, “why do you cry?”
The floodgates opened, and Zelda let herself fall apart, once again, in the arms of the only person she’d ever allowed to see her in such a state. And he comforted and soothed, silently stroking her hair and her arms and her damp cheeks, waiting until she was ready… now that he’d slipped past her defenses.
”I’m just… just so…” she huffed between sobs. Big, gulping breaths. “I’m so afraid, Link.”
Once the words began tumbling from her lips, there was no stopping them.
”I don’t want to close my eyes, because what if this is all a dream? A fantasy crafted by a long-dormant, desperate soul? What if I close my eyes and the only thing I see is oblivion? And even though it makes no sense - even though I know I wouldn’t be conscious of it…” Zelda sucked in a stuttered breath, her whole body trembling. “I know I wouldn’t survive losing you again. Even if my mind wouldn’t realize, my heart would be irreparably shattered. There would be nothing left, no reason for me to go on.”
Her hands found the collar of his lightweight linen tunic and curled her fingers into it, looking desperately, frantically between his tear-filled eyes. “I can’t lose you. I can’t. Not again.”
Link’s gaze shimmered silver in the moonlight, but his face… He wore the same peaceful, steadfast expression he always had, strength and support wrapping her in their warm cocoon.
He did not speak, but his palms found her cheeks, his thumbs scraping across them as he brushed away her tears, the lingering terror and desperation. Link was captivating, the calm center within the maelstrom of her existence. His presence settled her in a way that no one else ever could, and she felt the pounding of her heart begin to ease.
”It is not a dream, Zelda. I swear it,” he promised, those penetrating eyes never cowering. “You will not lose me. I could never leave you.” In one swift, graceful motion, the princess was swept up in her hero’s arms. His strength and steadiness had always fascinated her, seeing as he stood an inch shorter than she. Still, he carried himself like a man of twice his stature, with all the well-earned confidence of the warrior he was. The savior of the world, twice over.
Link carried her back up the stairs, cradling her close, and paused with his knees at the edge of the bed.
”Do you trust me, Princess?” The question was hot against the shell of her ear. And even as her pulse began to race, she answered.
”With my life.”
A whine escaped her lips as he climbed onto the mattress, walking on his knees to the center.
”And you know I would never let anything happen to you, right?” His lips were soft and warm against her temple, a brand of protection.
Laying them both down, he slid Zelda to one side, but kept her cheek pressed against his chest. She didn’t know how long they lay there, as he combed fingers gently through her hair and whispered hushed words of comfort and encouragement until her panic ebbed.
Link drew one of her hands up to rest at his collarbone, thumb dragging back and forth over her knuckles. “Listen to my heartbeat, Zelda. Feel the rise and fall as I breathe in and out,” he murmured, so softly. “Do you hear it, love?”
She barely had the strength to nod as his words and his touch and his heart’s rhythm soothed her.
”Let it comfort you. Anchor you. Let it guide you through the night. You are safe, and I will not let you go. Not ever.”
And upon that final vow, Zelda’s eyes fluttered closed. She surrendered to the consuming dark, to whatever tricks fate may have had in store.
~~~
She had to squint when she opened her eyes - or tried to. The morning sun cut a path like a knife across the room. Across the bed, where Link still lay beneath her, the steady thump of his heart against her cheek. When she tilted her face up, she was met with a warm, adoring smile that made her lungs falter.
”Good morning, Princess,” he offered as he tucked a lock of hair behind a pointed ear. Joy filled her chest as the realization dawned on her: she had not fallen into the endless dark of draconian sleep. She was well and truly awake. Alive. She was home. As her lips stretched into a bright grin, Link asked, “How are you feeling? Did you sleep well?”
Before she could answer, her body lurched, a great yawn bubbling up from her chest. Goddess, she’d slept very well, indeed. But she could still feel the weariness in her limbs and in her heart. It was not enough, not after so many sleepless days. With a snicker, Link pulled her closer to him, dragging her further up against his sculpted, scarred torso, and pressed a kiss first to her brow, then her hair.
”Go back to sleep, my princess. I’ll be right here when you wake.”
”Promise me?” She felt his answering contented sigh throughout her entire body.
”I swear it, love. I will not let you go.”
Another deep breath lifted her, melted her curves into his angles. And as she drifted away into much needed rest, his solemn vow followed. A protector and a beacon.
To be completely transparent, besides chatting with my besties and posting reviews, I've avoided many fandom socials lately. It's been actually pretty nice to breathe.
But, of course, today, I am introduced to one of the dumbest theories I've ever read, and let me explain why. A disclaimer: I don't mind theories, even if they're throw-spaghetti-at-the-wall levels of nonsense. As long as the author said "a theory?" Go nuts. I don't have to believe it but 10 points for being creative and giving me a chuckle.
What I do mind, though? When the author of said theory presents it to the socials as fact, especially when, in fact, it's already been completely, thoroughly, 100% debunked by the last canon book.
The example and the question posed: "Is Rhys's sister Lorin Tamlin's former lover?"
Now, this is a question in a poll based on their personal theory that, in fact, Ruhn's mother Lorin Donnell is Rhysand's *dead* sister and was sent to Midgard because Tamlin glamour shapeshifted some guards to look like Rhys's sister and got her to safety to the other world.
Yeah, I know. 🤦
Here are the cold-hard canon facts:
(1) Rhys, who understands what glamours are, states clearly that he buried his sister and mom in the middle of winter. We get great detail in this. It impacted him a lot.
(2) Rhys's sister after Tam's Fam was done with her:
(3) The gates to Midgard were 100% locked during the time Rhysand's *unnamed* sister died. The Harp was still lost until ACOSF. There was no way to send anyone beyond their world. At all. Aelin fell through as she forged the lock on her side, but had the gates been open from Midgard to Prythian, the Asteri would have already returned. That was the whole point of them wanting Bryce to open the gate, so they could go back.
(4) CC debunked alllll of this. Over and over and over again. Let's do a little family tree, shall we? (Honestly, as a genealogy nerd, I was stoked about this):
Note that the gates were locked. Yes, Aelin fell through when she was forging the locks when Feyre was pregnant with Nyx, but the lock from Midgard to Prythian was closed from Silene until after Nyx was born. Also, Silene had hidden the Harp and it wasn't until Nesta that it was found.
Not to mention, Lorin Donnell is the niece of Morven Donnell, whose line is related to Einar Danaan far in the past (thus making Ruhn Cormac's cousin on two sides, and Bryce's distant cousin on one).
There is no way in hell this works. Lorin Donnell is a 277+ year-old Avellan fae who was born in Midgard. Rhysand's sister, born in Prythian during the time the gates were sealed, is dead.
