simon never went to school. it was something he was quite ashamed of.
he had teachers, sure. he learned how to read, write, count. he never learned about science.
or, well, he learned that science was a list of things the government wanted you to believe to pull you away from God. because of course, God created the universe, and evolution was bullshit.
simon realized he grew up in a cult. he escaped, built a life for himself. his dad had teached him how to install a light switch once, and it’s the only thing he remembers being interested about. so he follows training and becomes an electrician. and soon came to the realisation that he didn’t know anything about the world around him. so he started to learn.
it’s not so long after that he stumbles across this streamer called ‘RGrace’ and saw the title of his lifestream ‘i have a doctorate in molecular biology: ask me anything!’. simon had no idea what molecular biology was. so he joined the live and asked.
and the man answered with such passion and excitement that simon found himself fascinated, and wanting to learn even more. so he asked more. and more. the man was an excellent teacher, and on top of that, there was only four people watching, including simon, so all his questions were left answered.
simon kept coming back. he soon came to find out that the man’s name was ryland grace and he was a scientist turned middle school teacher. ryland not always talked about science. sometimes he came on live just to talk about anything, and the man sure liked to talk. he would go on for hours about anything that went through his head. sometimes it would start science and then after an hour the subject has diverted all the way to his favourite pokemons and somehow it was just as interesting to simon.
but sometimes the subject diverted back to the viewers. because there was always very few of them, ryland was able to get to know each of them. whenever ryland asked questions, simon never answered. he never even gave him his name, but it was in his username, so.
it’s not that simon didn’t want to participate. he did. but he felt so small compared to the other people watching the stream. very often the conversation between ryland and the other viewers would go back and forth, there was an astrophysics student, a lab tech, sometimes this botanic professor would join in too, and they were all so smart. and simon was just there. and he wasn’t smart.
surely ryland wouldn’t be interested in the life of an electrician who never went to school.
that is until he gets called to fix a malfunctioning electrical panel and the man who opens the door is a blond man with glasses named ryland grace.
