we know hummer isn't "real" because nobody other than wifies acknowledges him. he never joins the game, has death messages, or talks to anyone other than wifies. he also is the one who shows wifies the way to see levi. now consider arronax: she never appears on screen, only through narrated dialogue coming out of jukeboxes, and her server that explains all of the leviathan (which is supposedly the no.1 spot to know about the leviathan) is not initially on top of wifies search results, no, hummer introduced wifies to arronax's research. when hummer is such a perplexing mysterious figure due to his beliefs about levi, i find it hard to assume that arronax (his foil) is a perfectly normal woman who wifies could just talk to, normally

the central conflict in this story is the conflict between faith and reason. reason dictates that the leviathan has a singular, logical, and definitive reason to exist, while faith hopes that the leviathan can surpass its own shackles of game glitches and code in order to be seen; a true supernatural entity can appear by way of faith (is what the argument of fate suggests). this is reflected in the character of hummer and arronax, where hummer is the representation of faith, while arronax is reason.

personally, both arronax and hummer seem like distant, godlike figures that represent their respective approach to understanding the world. perhaps in the second installment, we can learn more about arronax and why she stopped believing in levi, and decided that her scientific conclusions were correct

bonus side tangent: the difference between "levi" and "the leviathan" in the video is so cool, and highlights the differences in ideology so well. levi is the name given by hummer to humanise it, to turn something that may not exist into something corporeal, with wants and motives. something that he can worship.

the leviathan on the other hand, is a collection of interesting phenomena, recorded and analysed by thousands. this name strips it down to its bare essentials and prioritises the accesibility and useability of the name (if that makes sense) not even considering that the leviathan is something that can have its own desires. how could it? this is merely a game built on code.

Twinbird (nickname), head engineer of the 30 northern iterators (the final generation of iterators)

Twinbird is an ancient who belongs to an esoteric school of thought that promoted rapid spiritual awakening via methods considered taboo by the final dynasty of The People. She nevertheless still had a rather high ranking position in the House of Engineers because of her skills in the construction of Iterators (both in her current and prior incarnation). She chose to stay behind, after the project was cancelled, as one of the 60 maintenance engineers for the 30 iterators (even as those engineers began to leave). When mass ascension occurred they left her behind (it is unclear whether this was intentional or accidental).

Rapidly developed, with no intention of supporting a city population, for the sole purpose of there being more iterators working on the Great Problem. These 30 Iterators were designed to operate with minimal oversight and maintenance, having dedicated maintenance modules and drones. Their structure takes the shape of a truncated pyramid with their communication spires positioned at the very top. They’re less bound by taboos than their peers, which has earned them some ire from their fellow iterators. Ostracized from their own community they eventually cut off their communications to the wider network before re-opening them later on (after the global communication collapse) to communicate with Fractured Edifice. Later on, with Twinbird’s help, they would go on to fully remove all traces of the taboos from their systems. The 30 iterators (often called the 30 prisms) lack puppets (unnecessary for their role) or full names (their original names were just the number in the order of when they were built). After mass ascension they would go on to represent themselves with symbols and assign themselves nouns to go along with their numbers. All symbols are in the 3rd image above (potentially subject to change).

And then you start drilling and cause an oil seep in an inhabited group of islands and you feel bad, but your new friend makes a deal with the scientist to go study the seep, so it'll probably be fine, right? Well, then the fisherman, upon hearing that he'll be going back and forth between the oil rig and the Marrows (and isn't that a kind of morbid name for a place where people live?) a lot, dumps a glowing golden anchor overboard that OPENS UP A PORTAL, AND WHEN HE GOES IN THE PORTAL HIS BOAT FUCKING EXPLODES.

And then the next day, his suspiciously souped up fishing boat un-explodes out of the portal and he docks on your workplace that you also live in like nothing ever happened.
