.⊠pairing. medical assistant!reader x lars lindstrom
.⊠c.w. fluff, hurt/comfort. reader talks about being a woman, although no physical description. misinformation on medical tools and procedures (i looked everything up lol im sorry). mentions of food. one mention of needles. topics of grief and guilt. lars cries once.
.⊠summary. lars finds any and all excuses to visit the clinic to see the pretty assistant there.
.⊠authorâs note. chat i love lars. long live chubby ryan gosling </3.
ever since you joined dr. dagmarâs clinic as her apprentice, you were informed about larsâ situation, not that you didnât know about it given itâs the sole topic this town could talk about. you didnât mind. you helped backstage, so to speak.
you were tasked with looking for bibliography that can help back dagmarâs sessions with him, creating session objectives to direct his attention towards the situation at hand without arousing suspicion. you understood the importance of lars connecting with dr. dagmar, so you couldnât really interfere with his process. although you would be lying if you said you werenât curious to meet the famous lars.
every time heâd show up for one of biancaâs appointments, you made sure to greet them both, normally being greeted with a simple smile from lars.
but that was a long time ago. youâre happy to have silently helped lars, even attending biancaâs funeral, though you were sure lars couldnât have known you were there, you still showed, as did every single person in town.
every now and then, you still wonder how heâs doing. no one talks about it anymore and every time you ask dr. dagmar about it, she just assures you that karin says heâs okay, and that heâs delighted with his new baby niece. and you had absolutely no reason to question that, but you barely saw him anymore, only catching small glimpses of him when you jogged past his church.
as if the universe had heard you, while youâre busy with booking dr. dagmarâs appointments at the front desk, you hear a low voice going âexcuse me?â you turn to see none other than lars lindstrom. âoh, hi, lars! what can i help you with?â youâre genuinely delighted to see him. he looks much happier, although his quiet demeanor hadnât changed, you could see a small little twinkle in his eye you hadnât seen since you last saw him with bianca.
he blinks and shakes his head, turning around and leaving the clinic almost at a jogging pace. if it were anyone else, youâd be weirded out, or even worried, but since itâs him, itâs just endearing.
now, what you didnât know is that lars was so flustered hearing you say his name with such kindness, he was overwhelmed. silently scolding himself because he was sure today was the day. ever since he first saw you, he was flooded with guilt. he was taking his sick girlfriend to an appointment for godsakes. he couldnât be looking at the pretty receptionist. he tried his best to conceal his thoughts. and after everything that happened afterwards, it was the furthest thing from his mind.
until recently, when he was left astounded by your presence again when he saw you jogging past his church after mass one sunday morning. he remembered you quite well. he thought there was no harm in at least knowing your name. and the fact that he was coming down with the flu was the perfect excuse to go down to the clinic.
what a shame he didnât go through with it. thereâll be a next time, he thinks.
karinâs been encouraging him to ask you out. he thinks thatâs a bit excessive, though. all he really wants is to know your name, and maybe ask how long youâve been working with dagmar, and maybe ask where you live or where you like to spend your free time, all he really wants is to know you, basically. how karin figured out his littleâŠcrush on you, is above him.
what he doesnât know is that she saw the way he looked at you that first time, opting not to say anything because it wouldâve been disrespectful to bianca. and sheâs seen him looking for you across the street after mass a couple times now, not really wanting to say anything other than âlooking for someone?â in an amused tone. and laughing quietly when he violently shakes his head no and begins walking faster.
two days have gone by since lars showed up at the clinic. you wondered what he was going to ask or say, but youâre sure heâll be back when heâs comfortable enough. no sooner said than done, heâs there again, nervously toying with his hands and blinking tightly. you try your best not to stare at him while he makes his way to your desk. deciding only to turn to him when he speaks, that will make him more comfortable. you think.
âsorryâŠâ he begins. you turn to see him with a smile. you donât seem to notice the way his breath hitches, thank god, he thinks. âi was wondering if i could get an appointment with dr. dagmar. iâve beenââ he clears his throat. âiâve been coming down with the flu.â he blinks again. you nod, looking through the agenda. âhmm, iâm sorry lars, she doesnât seem to have any spaces left today.â you answer, apologetically.
he quickly turns on his heel, making way for the door. you stop him. âi could check you outâ check it out, if you want.â he turns again, placing his hands on your desk, thinking about what youâve offered. âi didnât know you were a doctor, too.â he smiles. âyes, well, iâm a medical assistant. iâm technically not supposed to diagnose you if dr. dagmar isnât there, butâ but if itâs just the flu i guess itâs alright. if thatâs alright with you.â you state. hoping he says yes. forâŠwhatever reason.
he thinks about it, he really does have a sore throat and a runny nose, and as he thinks youâre technically a doctor. although he does wonder if heâll be capable of regulating his heartbeat when you check himâ not that you need to do that for a common flu, mind you.
âokay.â he says quietly. âoh! perfect.â you suppress the urge to thank him, he doesnât need to know heâs the first person youâll be diagnosing. âiâll take you to the exam room, just give me a couple minutes, lars.â you finish with dr. dagmarâs schedule for the day sloppily, making sure not to waste larsâ time any more than you should.
lars is sat in the waiting room, looking at you and turning his head very quickly when he sees youâre looking at him. heâs so cute, you think. scratch thatâ why havenât you noticed how handsome he is? something about him being taken when you first met him, probably.
âright this way, please.â you stand up and direct him towards the exam room. once there, you ask him to roll up his sleeves so you can take his blood pressure, although you never imagined youâd be as affected as you were seeing him rolling his sleeves.
what is it with women and men rolling their sleeves? itâs almost an aphrodisiac, you ponder, while coming back to reality and clearing your throat, looking for the blood pressure cuff. this was, probably, unnecessary, but hey, youâre a health care professional, you must be thorough. heâs looking everywhere but at you while you pump air, and youâre doing your best to ignore how the veins in his arm are very visible.
with anyone else, the silence mightâve been uncomfortable, not with lars, though. for once, you didnât have to talk out loud, going through whatever youâre doing, because dr. dagmar wasnât around and because you were sure lars didnât care what a sphygmomanometer was, nor if he had nice veins for needles. but old habits dies hard. you mutter to yourself â115 over 75. thatâs okay.â
while youâre busying yourself looking for the next tool, lars is trying really, really hard not to look at you, or smell you. you smell great, what is that? vanilla? no matter. heâs quite grateful youâre so focused and professional, otherwise you wouldâve noticed the goosebumps cursing through his skin when you muttered something to yourself. thereâs something about a pretty voice saying just about whatever.
you approach him again with a stethoscope, pressing it to his back. asking him to breathe in and out.
âhave you had any fever, lars?â he breaks from his trance. âuh, no, not so far, no.â he answers. you hum. âsore throat?â you ask again. he clears his throat, as if your words have reminded him of that. âyes, a little bit. not too uncomfortable.â he says, sitting on his hands on the exam table. trying his best not to break eye contact.
you hum again. placing the stethoscope back to its place, making sure itâs exactly where it was. look, itâs not like dr. dagmar is strict, but you wanted to make extra sure there was no evidence of you diagnosing one of her patients. âokay. iâll have to feel your neck for any swollen lymph nodes, is that okay?â you ask carefully. you are very aware about his aversion for touch. but, it was necessary. you curse yourself for putting him in this situation, maybe if dr. dagmar was here, heâd feel more comfortable withâ
âokay.â he nods. leaving you dumbfounded for about a quarter of a second, before going back to your professional stance. he furrows his eyebrows in anticipation, heâs come a long way since he felt like burning when people touched him, but he still braced himself everytime. heâs positively astounded when he feels nothing once your hands are on his throat. it might evenâŠfeel good. last time it felt good when someone touched him was with bianca.
he really canât think about bianca without tearing up. so he tries not to, but tears are welling up in his eyes. he blinks rapidly a few times, swallowing a couple times, then he remembers his sore throat.
heâs tearing up. shit. you knew this was too much. you couldâve resorted to checking his throat with a penlight and a tongue depressor, but no. you had to touch him, you had to make it uncomfortable. âiââ you begin. âi am so sorry, lars. i know this is painful to you, i shouldâve checked it with a light first, iâm sorryââ you apologize profusely. taking your hands off him immediately. âno, iâm sorry. itâs not you, i swear. i justââ he hesitates.
but your kind eyes make him want to tell you the whole truth, how you light up his sundays even more because he gets to see you run by, how heâs tried every single week to come talk to you to no avail, so he just settles for the next best thing.
âi was just thinking about howââ he lowers his voice. âhow i always feel pain when someone touches me.â he blinks again, he can feel the tears running down his cheeks, heâs quick to wipe them off with his sweater. he almost wants to tear up again seeing you with such an apologetic look in your beautiful eyes.
âbutâ but i didnât feel anything like that at all when you touched me. it feltâ it felt good.â he admits. âand that only ever happened with bianca.â he lowers his gaze. purposely avoiding yours.
âlars, thatâs so sweet, iââ you swallow. âi thought you were hurting because i was touching you, not because youââ how can you even say what you wanted to say? ânot because me touching you feels goodâ? is that too romantic? you donât care. heâs a very sweet, kind, and honestly, quite handsome guy. at best, you make him feel reassured, at worst, he dismisses your comment. âiâm glad youâre comfortable with me touching you. iâm so glad i can be of help.â you tentatively place a hand on his shoulder, trying very hard not to look too pleased when he smiles to himself at that.
âwhatâs the diagnosis, doctor?â he tries his best to make a joke, and although he immediately cringes at himself, he canât seem to care anymore when he hears the soft laugh that escapes your mouth. âwell, not terrible news, but you do have a sore throat. and since i noticed the redness around your nose, i guess youâre sniffling too, right?â he nods. âyeah, common flu. best you can do is take an ibuprofen every six hours, okay? youâll be as good as new in a couple of days.â he nods again, hopping down from the table and making his way to the waiting room. you following closely behind.
you walk back to your desk. him hovering over it. âso,â you begin, not wanting him to leave just yet. âhow did i do? iâve never done that alone.â you confess. he blinks tightly again, a small smile plastered on his face. âyouâre going to be a great doctor.â without anything else to say, he hesitates to turn to the door. âandâ iâll tell karin and gus to ask for you when they feel bad, too.â he adds. making you smile. heâs so kind, and handsome, and it kind of makes you wonder how come he doesnât have anyone falling for him.
he looks like he wants to say something else. but he doesnât. he simply turns around and leaves. âbye, lars!â you shout. after the door has closed behind him, he waves at you and walks to his car.

a week has gone by and, obviously, heâs feeling much better. but heâs positive thereâs something wrong because heâs been getting headaches constantly. wellâŠhe got a headache, two days ago, for fifteen minutesâŠbut still, he always says âhealth first!â
so he makes his way back to the clinic. and the fact that heâll ask for you, specifically, is partly because heâs comfortable with you, and partly because heâs a bit worried he didnât see you jogging past his church yesterday. not that heâs bringing that up, though. reciting âyou look pretty todayâ like a mantra the whole drive there, he gets there rather quickly.
he sees you sitting at your desk. and you do look pretty today. âexcuse meâŠâ he begins. making you turn your head to him, moments before, you were busy writing everything down from one of dr. dagmarâs sessions. âyou look pretty today.â he says softly, making your heart flutter for just a moment. as soon as you try to answer, he continues. âiâm here because iâve been having headaches. i wanted to check that with you, if thatâs possible.â
âoh, thatâs too bad, lars. have you been stressed lately?â you ask him. âuh, no, not really.â he says. not really sure if he should answer truthfully to your questions, otherwise youâd begin to wonder if he was telling the truth. âuhm, are you eating normally? drinking enough water?â you ask again. truth be told, he wasnât one for drinking lots of water, so when he answers, itâs technically not a lie. âiâ i guess i havenât been drinking water, thatâ that must be it.â he nods. and turns around and leaves without a goodbye, again. only turning after he closes the door, waving goodbye at you.
this happens three or four more times during the month. heâd been getting headaches, toothaches, his left arm felt funny once, too. you name it. the poor guy was going through it.
had you been a little more naĂŻve, you wouldâve assumed he just wanted some company, but you are aware of the fact that he is a very socially busy person. youâd hear from people in the waiting room how theyâd gone to dinner with lars, or how a friend of a friend went bowling with him and how he was surprisingly good at it, so, yeah, you kind of figured he wasâŠcomfortable with you, for lack of a better word. and, no, you didnât mind. you were just wondering when his excuses would run out, thereâs only so many body parts that can ache.
so, fifth timeâs the charm, he thinks. all throughout his little visits to the clinic, karinâs been encouraging him to bring you a little something. âgirls like knowing theyâre on your mind, lars.â sheâd tell him. he walks in, yet again, although this time, he had no excuse prepared. with his hands safely in his pockets, he struts right to your desk, not even bothering to say âsorryâ or âexcuse meâ because there was, honestly, nothing he had prepared. so all he does is place a small box in your desk. when you turn to him and smile, he fights his feet to stay in place. he smiles back.
âi brought you something. for all your help. iâm feeling much better now.â he eyes the box. staring intently at it while you grab it.
it was a little silver necklace, with a pendant of the rod of asclepius. to say you were astounded falls short. it wasnât fancy or showy, but it was relevant to your life, which only made it better. âoh my god!â you gasp. âlars⊠you didnât have toââ you quickly rephrase your wording, you didnât want him to feel self-conscious or regretful of this thoughtful gift. âi absolutely love it.â you hold it in your hand, standing up to be face-to-face with this sweet, sweet, guy. you clasp it in place, looking at the pendant once more. âthank you so much, i love it!â
he smiles. âiâm glad.â he almost makes his way to the exit, again. but you walk to him. âhey, can iâ can i hug you?â you ask him. he hesitates. worried you mightâve made him uncomfortable, you ramble. âiâd like it, if thatâs okay with youâ you donât have to, though.â he opens and closes his hands, and then blinks tightly. âokay.â he mutters.
he opens his arms and in turn you do too. wrapping him in a tight hug. youâre quite surprised to feel his arms go around your waist, squeezing slightly.
heâs most likely at the brink of heart failure, in a good way. he wonders if this is what people meant when they said a hug fixes everything. he truly felt his anxiety and worries disappear briefly. not wanting to break the hug, he nuzzles his head on your neck. feeling your new necklace on his nose. he smiles to himself.
you melt into the hug, not wanting to break it before he does. after a little while, he separates from you. although only slightly. still holding you securely with both hands around your waist. âi was wondering ifââ he begins. you try your best to ignore the comforting weigh of his hands on you. âi shouldâve asked sooner, but i was wondering if you wanted to have dinner with me sometime.â he asks, sheepishly. only taking his hands off of you when he realizes theyâve been on your waist for a little too long to look accidental.
you all but jump up and down. heart and stomach fluttering. cheeks going red. âyeah. iâd love to! are you free tonight?â you think you should care about sounding intense. but you donât, really really donât. he hums.
âyeah, i think i am.â he smiles softly. âwhen do you get off work?â oh yeah. work. shit. youâd forgotten dr. dagmar had asked you to stay a bit late so you can go over some bibliography for some patient of hers. although she did say you could just come in on a saturday if you had plans. you make a mental note to tell her before your shift ends.
âin like, three hours. but i want to change. i wanna go home and maybe retouch my makeup.â you practically think out loud. âyou look very pretty right now.â he offers. if there was any way to smile harder right now, you would.
he makes his way back to his car, not bothering nor wanting to say goodbye because he knew for sure heâd see you soon. the hours you have left go by rather slowly, much to your dismay. checking the clock every few minutes wanting nothing more but to see â7:00 p.mâ plastered on it.
heâs very doubtful. he really really wants this to be a date. a proper date. but he still finds himself feeling guilty by moving on. do you think itâs a date? and if so, how can he tell you he wants it to be date but at the same time tell you heâs not ready just yet? he finds himself wondering on the drive back home. he figures heâll distract himself by getting ready.
as soon as the clock hits 7, youâre basically sprinting to your car to get ready in record time. once you get home, you wonder what to wear. opting for a comfortable outfit. not too fancy but not too casual for him to think you donât care. you didnât dare ask him if it was a date, truth be told, you hadnât liked anyone in a while. not like you liked lars, at least. and although youâre quite aware of what heâs gone through, had he shown at your door with flowers and in a tux, you wouldnât have objected. but alas, that wasnât the case.
before he left the clinic, you made sure to give him your address, making extra sure to be ready at exactly 7:30 p.m. and, punctual as ever, he was there. 7:30 sharp. wearing a comfortable sweater and equally comfortable jeans. he knocks softly twice.
when you open the door, heâs stunned by you. your outfit, your makeup, your hair. all of it. if he thought you looked beautiful wearing scrubs, it didnât even come close to seeing you in your element. any and all doubts about being ready to date again thrown out the window.
âhi again!â you greet him, trying not to seem too smug by his small gasp. âyou look gorgeous.â he emphasizes. giving out compliments this easily is new to him, he realizes. âi was thinking we could go to this place karin recommended. i think they serve italian food, ifâ if thatâs alright.â he says.
truth be told, he was much too tempted to kiss you, anywhere youâd let him. in those few seconds you went inside your house to grab your purse, he daydreamed about kissing your lips, feeling weirdly okay with the thought of being so close to you. well, not okay, good. great, even.
although conversation was a bit awkward at first, you made it work. falling into a nice rhythm of asking each other questions about your life back and forth. only stopping to take bites of your food. it was a really nice restaurant. like, really nice. it did make you wonder if it was a date after all, and honestly, youâd want nothing more.
but thereâs this sort of restraint you noticed in him. youâd catch him almost reaching for your hand a couple of times. deciding enough was enough, while youâre telling him an anecdote from the clinic, he slowly but surely reaches out for your hand resting besides your plate. feeling brave and stroking it back and forward a few times.
you really canât suppress the smile forming in your face. it was very nice to see him feel so confident. and truth be told, that only made you feel more smitten by him. and you really canât deny that helping him come out of his shell makes you feel a bit satisfied.
but lars canât quite shake the feeling that heâs doing something wrong. although he decides to let that small part of him be suppressed, especially after seeing how pretty you looked when you smiled at him rubbing your hand.
as the gentleman he is, he drops you home. walking you to your doorway and thanking you for a very nice dinner. âwe should do this again soon.â you say. he smiles even bigger than he had tonight. âyeah. yeah iâd love that. iâd like to take you out on a date again.â oh. he said it. so yeah, it was a date, then.
it honestly slipped. he didnât mean to say it. he didnât mean to say date. but any anxiousness he mightâve felt, vanished entirely when he saw your reaction.
you pulled him in without warning. wrapping him in a hug so tight he felt secure. all he could really think about is how close your faces were. after you pull away, he subconsciously follows you, his lips hovering over yours.
you donât dare take a breath, afraid you might spook him. had he been anyone else, you probably wouldâve kissed him first. but you understood the importance of him making the first step. your eyes flutter shut when you feel his lips on yours.
he doesnât really remember either of you moving, yet here he was. kissing you so softly he almost didnât feel it. in a good way. in the âthis doesnât burn meâ way.
it can really only be described as a peck. but no matter. this was the first of many, you expected.
he pulls away. a big, shy smile on his face. âokay.â he says to himself. âiâll seeâ goodbye.â he turns on his heel and practically sprints to his car. hey, at least he said goodbye this time.
over the moon is the only way you can describe your feelings. yeah, you didnât make concrete plans for a second date, but heâll come by any day of the week. and with flowers this time.
he figures the only way to move on, is moving on. and he hopes to god that bianca is approving of his decisions in heaven. after all, heâs never felt more comfortable or more smitten with someone since her.
