With the promise of classes starting up again, priorities shifted.

Of course, classes were expected to be at the forefront of that list. A job, if you had one, and of course everything you have has to always be clean, and of course you’ve got to be happy! You have so much going on!

You sighed, head in your hands. Already everything felt so heavy and dizzying. Your overpriced drink you’d tried to treat yourself to only served to remind you of how you had to watch your expenses, wonderful. Life is hard. It beats down. It’s tiring. The burnout that awaits you each day is inevitable, a ticking time bomb and some days it overwhelms you, enveloping you whole and drowning you in a seemingly endless stream of misery.

Of course, your friends get it. Especially one of your best friends, Vash. Who you’d found to be great company while studying, even if it’s on call. You didn’t feel like leaving your room today, checking back to your discord tab to see if he was still studying.

you’re a young, pretty third year resident with a huge amount of gumption. abbot sees a bit of himself in you, and even though you can handle yourself well he feels the need to make sure you’re okay on shift. whether that’s a quick check in when he gets a chance, or asking shen for an update on you when you’re nowhere to be seen, under abbot’s watchful eye no one will dare touch you.

until abbot’s dealing with breaking a death to a family, and you’re in with a drunk patient who smacks the shit out of you when you refuse to give him morphine.

yelling fills the ER as security hold back the patient, and shen and ellis come running to your aid. your lip is split and you can feel the side of your face already beginning to swell. you’re uneasy on your feet, and john steadies you carefully as he gives instructions to ellis.

“someone get abbot!” he yells to bridget, who runs to find the room abbot is in.

“fuck,” you groan, clutching your face. “be honest, how bad does it look?”

“it doesn’t look good,” shen says softly. “let’s get you checked out.”

“john,” you suddenly come to a stop. “i think i’m gonna throw up.”

“emesis basin, now!” shen yells to lena, who throws one to him in the blink of an eye.

shen manages to put it in front of you right as you keel over and empty the contents of your stomach.

“woah, what the fuck is going on?” abbot is quick to come behind you, making sure the stray pieces of hair escaping your ponytail are out of your face. “bridget said a patient got violent?”

shen takes the basin away from you and that’s when abbot notices the swelling on your face.

“shit, she’s bleeding. she might also have a concussion. let’s get her a bed," abbot’s at your side in no time, shining a light into your eyes. you're too out of it to catch the words he whispers to shen. "i want a word with the patient who did this to her."
