can’t believe the visigoths are getting shafted like this. 𐌲𐌿𐍄𐌸𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰 𐌰𐍆𐍄𐍂𐌰 𐌿𐍂𐍂𐌴𐌹𐍃𐌹𐌸! 𐌿𐌽𐍃𐌰𐍂 𐌳𐌰𐌲𐍃 𐌵𐌹𐌼𐌹𐌸!
“How would you feed if you were a vampire” reveals a lot about people
“Steal blood donations from hospitals and blood banks” = my personal favorite. They assume the process for this is simpler than dealing with eating people, clearly the most ethical.
“Stealing blood bags is more unethical than eating people” = surprisingly common take. Perhaps they hold the belief some people deserve life saving care over others. If stealing blood people donate anonymously that would keep both you and potential victims alive, then how is it unethical? Most likely, they read this take online and never really thought about it too hard just agreed because everyone else did. Very telling.
“I’d only feed off of volunteers”= has a deep set faith in a sense of community. Not only people that you trust to keep your secret but would put themselves in danger for you. That’s beautiful. Probably gay.
“I’d feed off of strangers but knock them out first, I’d just take a little” = the belief this is more ethical than stealing blood donations is fascinating
“I’d only eat bad people” = MASSIVE can of worms, requiring its own post. who do you believe deserve to die, how would you be sure of that, and how is this more ethical? This conversation is now about who you would murder if you could get away with it

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
i hope the original author sees this thread go by (or y'all are leaving comments on ao3), there is a A LOT of love in the tags and they absolutely deserve it
hey, I'm isaac chotiner I wrote this! I thought a small handful of people might enjoy it and instead it is by some margin the most popular thing I've ever posted on ao3. two key takeaways: 1) the people crave affectionate fidelity to the new yorker style guide, and 2) yuletide rules
Matt Levine linked to my fic in Money Stuff and described it as "Isaac Chotiner/Shirley Jackson fan fiction," I feel like I'm on drugs and/or hallucinating

My dude just casually dropping quotes from -checks notes- Blake, Shakespeare, Jacques Cousteau, Siri Hustvedt, Stanley Kubrick, James Joyce, Springsteen, Knausgård (of /course/ he's into Knausgård!!), and Pacino in an interview.
Likeability of a character doesn't seem to be something you care about all that much. No, I don't really give a fig for likeability. I mean, it's like, are we likable? [Laughs.] It's like, I don't know. I don't even really know. In certain moments maybe, and in another moment maybe not. And it's that duality that everyone has. It's Blake, it's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: We have aspects that are saintly and we have aspects that are monstrous. We all do. Light and shadow.

There are roughly three New Yorks. There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born there, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size, its turbulence as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter--the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. Of these trembling cities the greatest is the last--the city of final destination, the city that is a goal. It is this third city that accounts for New York’s high strung disposition, its poetical deportment, its dedication to the arts, and its incomparable achievements. Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness, natives give it solidity and continuity, but the settlers give it passion. And whether it is a farmer arriving from a small town in Mississippi to escape the indignity of being observed by her neighbors, or a boy arriving from the Corn Belt with a manuscript in his suitcase and a pain in his heart, it makes no difference: each embraces New York with the intense excitement of first love, each absorbs New York with the fresh yes of an adventurer, each generates heat and light to dwarf the Consolidated Edison Company.
-E.B. White, Here is New York (1948)
