very long stranger things rant incomingâŚIâm sorry but I needed to get my thoughts out because volume 2 had so much potential to be good but it ultimately fell flat for me
my biggest problem with stranger things and one of the biggest reasons I think their storytelling often falls flat is because they are TERRIFIED of killing off main characters. not one of the main cast has died since literally season 1. they keep doing fakeout deaths or making us think someone is gonna die only to make them miraculously alive (hopper and max for example)
hopperâs âdeathâ wouldâve have so much more impact if he was actually dead. it wouldâve given el and joyce something to really fight for. if max died, it wouldâve been devastating of course but it wouldâve worked so well because itâs so tragic, because she had only just realised that she didnât want to die, she wanted to live and be with lucas again. it wouldâve made for some great character work for lucas in s5 and wouldâve given the party motivation to kill vecna for max. she is one my favourite characters so of course Iâm happy sheâs alive, but Iâm just saying that the story couldâve been so much more compelling and interesting if she did die. and they canât even kill off the wheeler parents apparently!!
instead of killing the main characters (which would be devastating but would, again, add so much weight and emotion and drive to the story and characters) they keep introducing a new character every season just to kill them off in the end. I loved eddie but I didnât feel very connected to him because he was only there for one season. so of course I didnât care as much when he died, at least not as much as I would if it was steve or jonathan instead, whoâve been there from the start. the main reason I did care about eddieâs death was because of dustinâs reaction.
and their refusal to kill off main characters makes the cast of characters so convoluted, thereâs WAY too many main characters now and it means that the important characters donât get time to be fleshed out properly or have a proper arc or even have substantial screen time (this has been a problem since season 3, but itâs especially apparent in season 4 and 5)
mike (who is arguably the main character in s1 apart from el) has been absolutely shunned to the side in vol 2 â he had like three scenes and none of them where important. el (literally the main character apart from will?) is just there for decoration apparently. joyce is boring and nowhere near the compelling character she used to be. jonathan is absolutely ruined because they hate him apparently? we didnât even get his reaction to will having powers?? hopper is also boring and they canât seem to decide what to do with him. they donât have time to work on good character arcs or relationships anymore because there are too many characters.
essentially what Iâm saying is that the duffers are fucking scared of killing off their characters even though it would improve their story and give them more leeway to work with the other characters. I thought for sure they would kill of some characters in s5 and I thought they would do it before the finale, because it wouldâve added more weight, higher stakes, emotion, and drive for the characters, and made season 5 âdarkâ like they said it would be
jonathan and nancy shouldâve died! it wouldâve been sad but it also wouldâve made for some great character work with joyce realising sheâs been neglecting jonathan, some fantastic mike angst (finn wolfhardâŚcarrying emotional weightâŚ) if his big sister died before they were able to save holly, and it wouldâve been cool if jonathanâs death motivated will to go up against vecna. also mike and will couldâve had some great scenes together if both their older siblings died. even just killing off karen could give us some good content to work with for mike and nancy!
but for some reason no oneâs died yet and everyone has crazy plot armour. itâs lowkey too late now to make killing anyone off very impactful seeing as itâs the last episode ever, but if no one dies in the finale Iâll be pissed. but they keep hinting at it with dustin & steve and el & hopper especially, so I fear it might not actually happen, theyâre just trying to scare us </3

Some people say that there are no stupid questions, which is blatantly false. Of course there are stupid questions, and if you have one, you had better ask it, before you go and do make a stupider mistake. Stupid questions are more important than intelligent ones. Iâm willing to bet more people die because of stupid mistakes than because of intelligent ones.
as in you'll never achieve the perfect daily routine, sleep schedule, coping mechanisms, mannerisms, fashion sense etc. even after years and years of healing and improvement and self-discovery. you will never be so good at life that you manage to utilize every waking moment. its great to be productive and all but sometimes you'll suck ass. sometimes you'll take eight hours to be done with a twenty minute job. you'll prioritize the wrong thing. you'll sleep for 12 hrs just to avoid being awake. you'll relapse. and you'll relapse again. you'll forget to turn in the assignment. you'll order too little food. life is far too large and complex for you to even experience it completely, much less try to make sense of and control it. you can't. please give up on that and be at peace with the hours you lose. they are not separate from your life.
