All the Trans Jax discourse has made me realise how many people don't view representation as something that exists to represent people to themselves and make them feel seen or validated but rather to represent us to non queers as a palatable sales pitch for why they should tolerate our existence.
I think this actually applies to every example of representation, people get so critical of the representation of minorities & marginalized people that they forget we ARE the people creating this representation and deserve to tell our stories even if you don't think they're uwu wholesome 100 enough
I read a tumblr post that's similar to this topic that I'm gonna paraphrase here, but the more critical you are about how marginalized people represent themselves in the media they create, the more you alienate them, and the more you show the industry that it should be old white men that are writing these stories instead
It also should be going without being addressed but not every representation will represent everything and everyone. Not all gay characters will represent the gay community as a whole, not all bi characters will represent the bi community as a whole and lord knows not all trans characters will represent the trans community as a whole but rather a slice of it. Jax represents a slice of the trans community and we have to be more comfortable with this, even if this slice is as thin as a white hair.
Representation isn't going to be universal, we have made a huge advancement as now we're not represented only by the stereotypes. Next advancement will be us being represented by the people within our community that we hate and have behaviors that most people wouldn't willingly partake in. And deserve to be seen and talked about without being demonized, excused just because they're in a minority or denied the right to exist as a whole or in the community they are a part of.
I feel like people have this misconception that friends always agree with you. This is incorrect; A true friend will disagree with you, and even call you out on your bullshit, and still be your friend.
another critter life advice i give you: any dehumanization you justify inflicting onto someone you dislike can be justified as its inflicted onto you. you should keep your standards even when fighting a shithead because inevitably someone will think you are one too
like saying stuff like 'you shouldnt misgender trans people. EVEN BAD ONES' is good and all because it does exemplify this but i think that it needs to be said at all is a sign of a deeper seeded issue.
dehumanization of 'the enemy' is justified because theyre 'the enemy'. but WHO 'the enemy' is is such a vague and nebulous concept that at any point you could be That Guy. whether its on a smaller interpersonal scale or (god forbid) on the scale of a large portion of the internet you become The Enemy for someone, you will experience whatever level of dehumanization has been deemed socially acceptable at the time for someone deemed 'The Enemy'.
so not just for the sake of self interest, but for the sake of not being ashamed of the person you become when its 'justified', keep your humanity and your standards even when people around you dont.
