At the risk of sounding anti-intellectual, I think that college should be free and also not a requirement for employment outside of highly specialized career fields
At the risk of sounding like an effete intellectual, I do actually think you should be allowed to just take college courses indefinitely
technically you can, if you don't care about degrees.
Free Harvard courses. Free Courses from Stanford. Free Courses from MIT. Free courses from Yale. Free courses from Princeton.
Free courses on Coursera.
Free Courses on EDx Free Courses on Alison
For paid, there's The Great Courses+/Wonderium. 20$ a month for unlimited courses.
When searching, the phrases you're looking for are Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), or you can do a general search of say, "free online college courses." Oh, and so you don't get surprised like I did, have an avoid: Hillsdale College is a conservative Christian site and not a valid MOOC place. Sign up with them and you will get things like THIS IS WHY THE LEFT IS TURNING YOUR KIDS TRANS AND GAY in your inbox.
@yourunderwaterskies I wanted to say thank you so much for adding these links, seriously, they've been life-changingly helpful to me-
And I also wanted to mention that humanitarian organisations have free courses too, like the Red Cross on international humanitarian law.

The infection, caused by the fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII (TMvii), spreads through intimate contact and has predominantly been seen among men who have sex with men. It causes painful, coin-sized rashes on the arms, buttocks, trunk, legs, and genitals. While infections can be treated with oral antifungal medications, treatment can take several weeks, making fast detection of the uncommon infection critical.Â
âTMvii can resemble other skin conditions or sexually transmitted infections, so proper evaluation is important,â says Tom Carpino, Ph.D., the Hock postdoctoral research fellow at DGHI, who has studied the public health challenges of emerging STIs such as mpox. âThe lack of awareness among the highest risk individuals and communities, combined with the lack of wide-scale testing and reporting from clinics, are ingredients for a very serious epidemic to go under the radar.â
Following the links in the article shows this is a strain of ringworm (one of the fungi that cause ringworm, there are three)
It seems really misleading to refer to it as an STI since it can be spread by any kind of close contact or using the same items like towels. Not just sex.
It is also needlessly stigmatizing to single out men who have sex with men as primarily being affected, when it is skin contact that spreads the disease, not any particular sexual practice or sex at all.
It makes it sound like men who have sex with men are extra disease-spreading in their sexual activities, or that men who have sex with men are the only people who can get it. Not cool
men who have sex with men tend to report sexual health concerns at much higher rates, for reasons that should be fucking obvious to a professional news outlet :)
Right, exactly...the trauma of the AIDS epidemic is still fresh in memory...so men who have sex with men probably are much more likely to get tested when there is a weird rash or something.

somebody posted this Calvin and Hobbes strip and i cannot overstate just how topical this fuckin thing is
âThe ad was in a womenâs magazine and if I remember correctly, was for a perfume. It featured a white woman lying in bed with a black man. The manâs shirtless back was to the viewer, making only his taut, muscular form and powerful-looking arms and shoulders visible. He was faceless, unidentified. The woman looked sultrily at us from over his mysterious form, satisfaction writ large over her features. She had partaken of whatever delights this man had to offer and was smugly, luxuriantly basking in the afterglow. The ad copy was, âTake a walk on the wild side.â My teacher used the ad as an example of how marketers can use certain words and images to convey large amounts of information subtly and effectively. A white woman having sex with a black man? How risquĂŠ. The implication: be a little like that woman. Spray on that perfume and feel like the kind of girl who has sex with faceless, muscular black men in ritzy hotel rooms because itâs an adventure, a thrill, a risk, something illicitly pleasurable. These are the semiotics of race. This is why columnists will trip over themselves not to call Lupita Nyongâo or Angela Basset âbeautifulâ, choosing instead to use terms that call to mind a kind of savage, animalistic magnetism: fierce, striking, edgy, eye-catching. Words like âprettyâ and âbeautifulâ and âcuteâ are for white women whose bodies and sexualities are not seen as wild, animal, or untamed. Black men are hulking, threatening, thuggish; white men are charming, sexy heartthrobs with hearts of gold. Brown women are exotic, with their âhoney-colouredâ skin and their âmysticalâ, âenchantingâ beauty, unlike their white counterparts, who are held up as not only ideal, but knowable and safe. White people are beautiful; non-white people are dangerous.â

Gentrification creates a stifling homogeneity in urban areas that makes it less suited for the everyday lives of the lower class and more suited towards the leisure and tourism of those with expendable income.
An old, decrepit laundromat gets replaced by an upscale bakery? And people are mad? Itâs not that the poor hate organic vegan cupcakes, itâs that most of us donât have a way to do laundry in our own home.
Run-down corner stores replaced by hand-made designer clothing boutiques? We donât hate your eco-fabric shawl, but I canât eat that for dinner after work like I could have a can of beans I grabbed from that corner store when I donât have time to take the bus to the real grocery store after work.
What gentrification brings in and of itself is not typically bad, itâs that gentrification brings institutions of leisure and pleasure and makes it so that the poor have to go farther out of their way for basic necessities. It turns low-income living spaces into local tourist attractions. It can even create food deserts by putting restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in that the majority of the lower class cannot afford.
Imagine if someone totally renovated your house and turned it into a mini theme park - they took away your sleeping space, where you prepare food, where you clean yourself and get ready for your day, and replaced it with things that will please people who are visiting, who have their own homes they can go back to, who are here not for their entire life but just as a distraction from their otherwise mundane existence. Itâs not that you hate theme parks, itâs not like youâve never been to a theme park and vow to never visit one again. Itâs just that you need to live! To survive! And the leisure of those who have more than you should not invalidate your existence.
I am glad this has made the rounds. Some people feel a dense misunderstanding or misinterpretation concerning gentrification, and I think it helps to hear a description/explanation of what gentrification is from those who are both affected by it and educated by the culture from which it hails. I and many others enjoy some of the delights of gentrification while simultaneously having their livelihoods threatened by it.Â
Yet another new study debunked the basis for the anti-trans sports bans. It was never about sports but for creating legal avenues for exclusion and abjection. This is one of the largest analyses ever conducted, involving 52 studies and 6,485 trans people. Read the study here.
post so nice had to reblog it twice and force it down everyone's throats

Did you know that after they switched to blind auditions, major symphony orchestras hired women between 30% to 55% more? Before bringing in âblind auditionsâ with a screen to conceal the the candidate, women in the top 5 major orchestras made up less than 5% of the musicians performing.
so I believe it was actually more complicated than that, in interesting ways. Because at first, when they did blind auditions, they were STILL hiring more men.
âŚThen they put down a carpet, so that high heels didnât clack on the floor, and BOOM women were suddenly getting hired.
The testers didnât even know thatâs what they were picking up on, which just goes to show how tiny of a cue it takes for misogyny to kick in.
The case of blind auditions for orchestras and how it dramatically changed the gender makeup of orchestras is a very illuminating example of gender bias, and an interesting possible way of countering it.
You can be sexist without knowing it. You can be racist without knowing it. This is not a moral failing; it is a moral imperative to remember that you are fallible, and take steps to limit the damage your squishy ape brainâs foibles can cause.
The final chapter in Malcolm Gladwellâs Blink (2005) describes this in detail.
What you donât usually hear about when discussing this blind audition process is that after the blind auditions were implemented, when women had gotten many positions in the orchestra, men no longer saw being a member as prestigious and the salaries for the entire orchestra dropped.
Has anyone figured out whatâs so viscerally wrong with this woman yet
Sheâs so one dimensionally evil you guys đđ how is she real
read this and remember it. read this and remember that she is going to use the profits of her fucking ego-stroking reboot to decimate trans rights. read this and remember that every time you pay into her IP, you are emboldening her to hurt us more.
our lives matter more than your fucking nostalgia.
trans lives matter more than your fucking nostalgia.
cannot help but dance to myself when seeing this post
I donât like how Iâm kinda expected to rewrite the first 20 years of my life just because Iâm trans. I was the eldest daughter in a black household. I canât go back and edit my history to say I was the eldest son, cuz that doesnât accurately convey the certain standards I was held to. I was the only girl in my engineering class. I canât leave out the âgirlďżźâ part. It recontextualizes the entire situation. I donât think either of those facts invalidates my current gender and I donât think trans people should be expected to rewrite their own history in fear of that
its so hard to take fatphobes seriously when you realize they're living in a fullfledged delusion. Like you could look at a thin person and i buying our groceries one after the other and see them buying nothing but carbs and snacks and soda and frozen processed foods and me buying nothing but locally sourced meats and whole vegetables and water and maintain that i must live a less healthy lifestyle bc of my weight. You can watch me and a thin person walk up the same hill and see them losing their breath and needing to take breaks and see me make it to the top without breaking a sweat and maintain that i must live a less healthy lifestyle bc of my weight. You can watch a thin person eat an entire bucket of fried chicken in one sitting and have nothing to say and then see a fat person eat nothing but salads for a week and tell them "hey you know salad isn't as healthy as you think it is i bet that dressing is full of fats and croutons are just carbs i bet that salad is mostly croutons and disgusting fatty dressing this is why you aren't losing weight". You have to completely divorce yourself from reality to maintain your worldview and its pathetic. 99% of the thin people i know dont go to a gym regularly and dont worry about eating healthily at all. Im simply not going to live in your fantasy world where thin people are allowed to be thin because of their genetics but fat people can never ever be fat because of their genetics and every choice they make is a moral failing.
No matter how little notes something i post about fat liberation gets some volatile fatphobe always manages to find it and say the stupidest least science informed bullshit ive ever heard in my life, its a true show of dedication from them even i don't think about fat people this much

this video has been on my mind for days đ
@joy-and-whimsy-official have you got this? This post positively radiates with joy and whimsy :)
Heck yeah it does! Joy and whimsy detected! This post is joyful and whimsical!
idk why people get super pedantic about the movie logic in Home Alone and start and try to pick it apart, because like, its a Christmas movie about a child accidentally being left home alone, the premise isn't exactly asking us to suspend our disbelief that much, and yet nearly every single "gotcha" question I see people bring up about this film is literally answered within the first 15 minutes :/
"seriously how did no one in the family not realize Kevin wasn't there?" everyone was rushing so they wouldn't miss the flight but also every other single contingency measure in place became useless: Kevin wasn't supposed to be alone that night but they moved his cousin to a different bed, Kevin's passport was accidentally thrown away by his dad the night before, the neighbor boy threw off the older cousin's head count so she ended up with the "correct" number of kids before they left the house, they dropped the plane tickets at the terminal, the parents sat in a different class than the kids on the plane
"why didn't Kevin go to the police, the neighbors, etc" his neighbors are also on vacation, the phone lines are down, and if seeing the weird guy stalking his house several days earlier as a police officer wasn't enough to make him suspicious of the cops, he also literally thinks he made his family disappear. like magically, supernaturally, willed them out of existence. and he's eight, so
also he accidentally stole a toothbrush from the store and when you're eight years old that means the police are going to put you in jail forever
