With love, Bi-Positive.
how to convince people to move over to linux "you have the freedom of doing what you want with your pc and with open source alternatives" ❌
too wordy
most people have no idea what that means
"what is linux"
"you can't run league of legends on it" ✅
straight to the point
very easy to understand
over half of the earth's population now use linux
Ancient Greece literally created what became western civilization. Why are you acting like it’s separate?
(context)
"The West" as we know it, and as is wielded against the various peoples of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, started to be formed in the Middle Ages with the idea of Christendom and attempts to rebuild the Western Roman Empire (see: Charlemagne) and "Western culture" only really came into existence as a result of the European Enlightenment into the 19th century.
West Asia and North Africa had massive influence on what would become "the West," both indirectly via their influence on Greece and Rome and directly (Babylonian religious astrology was the foundation for the entire field of astronomy in the Renaissance and later). & Greece also had a massive influence over them, as Muslim caliphates studied and further developed the works of the Greeks in medicine, mathematics, philosophy, all kinds of scientific pursuits, and it was through Arab philosophers like Ibn Rushd that these works came back into European thought at all and allowed for intellectual renaissances. Egypt was the breadbasket of the Roman empire, housed the Library of Alexandria, had a massive influence over Greek and Roman religion through syncretism. Yet the WANA region & it's cultures are not considered part of "the West." We draw a big line down the Mediterranean that never existed historically. Why do the British, on the edge of the Roman empire, get to claim to be the cultural inheritors of the ancient Greeks through "Western civilization" but the Egyptians don't?
Ancient Greece is certainly a part of the mythos of "the West," and Greece is obviously part of European history, but just because people in Western Europe decided to construct this idea of a historical relay race of civilization where no one matters except for whichever European power is currently in control, does not make it true.
Not to mention that it doesn't even really benefit Greece. This idea of ancient Greece as "creating Western civilization" has been used by the British and other Western Europeans to distance modern Greeks from their ancestors, in some really fucking gross ways, and the same has happened to southern Italy. Because the people actually living in those areas don't live up to the whitewashed anti-Oriental fantasy.
TL;DR Ancient Greece did not create Western civilization, they created ancient Greece. That the people who created Western civilization were influenced by and obsessed with ancient Greece does not make ancient Greeks, people from a very different cultural context (and also a term which covers so much time and places), "Western." Especially when talking about how modern Americans and Western Europeans see things like gender, sexuality, and religion in comparison to an ancient Athenian's perception of those things.

so i’ve eliminated my phone from the “staying up all night” equation by getting an alarm clock and charging said phone in another room, but this resulted in a second, secret problem of staying up too late drawing because i still had my tablet. i don’t wanna move my tablet to another room as well because i like having a little bit of drawing time before bed so for about a week i was like….. oh i’ll just force myself off at the correct time eventually. one of these days that will happen.
but last night realized i'm never gonna just gain the willpower to curb my bad habits at random, that’s the entire reason i took the phone out of the room, so i just. set my tablet to turn completely greyscale from 12:30am to 8am to prevent me from staying up all night drawing. and guess who actually fucking went to bed the second his tablet turned grey.
moral of the story and a lesson i think everyone can take from this is don’t expect yourself to just get over your bad habits through sheer force of will. it won’t fucking happen. instead make them as annoying as possible to continue. make them completely unsatisfying. sabotage your bad habits.
June 7 2020 - Black Lives Matter protesters in Bristol, UK, tear down the statue of 17th century slave trader Edward Colston, and dump it in the harbour. Protestor John McAllister, 71, said: “It says ‘erected by the citizens of Bristol, as a memorial to one of the most virtuous and wise sons of this city’.“The man was a slave trader. He was generous to Bristol but it was off the back of slavery and it’s absolutely despicable. It’s an insult to the people of Bristol.” [video]/[video]
we're abolishing gender! in the future people will just be referred to as AMAB or AFAB, no need for gender at all! 😀
this is a progressive stance, you see, because AMAB and AFAB are different words from "man" and "woman." we're leaving such outdated concepts behind!
no no no it's not "misgendering you." it doesn't refer to your gender, it refers to the sex you were assigned. that way we don't need gender anymore! you can just throw that old thing away
now there's only two categories: AMABS and AFABS! so much simpler! what? no I didn't say there's only two genders. these aren't genders they're categories. this is progress we're making progress
you want to change your assignment? because of what, your gender? no you don't need one of those, I said to get rid of it
60s sci-fi will really have you saying shit like "we used to think the future would be good"
Even when it's not, like, *utopian* per se there's a general air of just presupposed optimism given the whole (gestures broadly) civil rights movement and space race and all. The political motivations behind the space race are uh besides the point. The zeitgeist of it all was so. Head in hands. God
I've often found that humanity itself is much like a struggling individual. We have ups and downs, and when we're in the dumps, we lose sight of the bigger picture of how far we've come. And, much like the struggling individual, when those bad times come, we have to keep our spirits high and hold onto our hopes and continue to believe (and act on those beliefs) that the future will be good. It's easy to think so when things are already looking up. But good futures can only begin when we face the worst of ourselves.
I believe this is the perfect time to start building a good future.
We need to fight like hell.

I absolutely blame Facebook for this shift. Words cannot describe how freaking WEIRD it was in the mid-00s when there was suddenly this popular website where you were required to use your real, brickspace name and encouraged to post photos of yourself. Every single bit of Standard Internet Safety prior to then said that you should never ever ever do either of those.

a lot of united states politics make a lot more sense when you factor in that a lot of us laws are written and passed by people who think a liberal arts degree is a degree in art that has a pro-liberalism political message
"he would not fucking say that" and "he wouldnt do that" and "this mischaracterization is horrendous" but its an author rereading the beginning chapters of their first draft
