dunk + textposts part 5
if youre in the US (especially the northeast + michigan) i would avoid bagged salads/greens and generally wash your produce very thoroughly unless you want the diarrhea parasite
Michigan is experiencing its largest outbreak of a parasitic infection that causes severe diarrhea. Nearly 1,000 people have been diagnosed
this is not life-threatening, but also who wants weeks of diarrhea and a fucking parasite in them lol. if you suspect you've already had this and it's passed, i would see a doctor. you might need an antiparasitic anyway. if you're actively sick, see a doctor and they might be able to prescribe medication to help you get over it faster.
try to avoid eating raw vegetables, scrub fruit with a produce brush and rinse thoroughly with water. again, don't bother with premade greens or bagged salads. if you buy lettuce, remove the outer 2-3 layers of leaves.
there are UNVERIFIED rumors that the greens have been linked to a company that sources to taco bell. some locations have been actively pulling fresh ingredients like lettuce, avocado, and pico de gallo to mitigate the threat, so i would avoid any products from them just in case. considering how vast supply chains are, i'd be wary of any fast food greens in general for now.
also note this is a PARASITIC infection. most diarrhea-causing pathogens you expect to contaminate your greens are bacteria (e.g. e. coli and salmonella), which are a different domain of organism altogether. cyclospora is a protozoan, which is bigger and more complicated than a bacteria (for reference, malaria is also caused by a protozoan). bacterial diarrhea can be dangerous, but you might also expect to weather it and survive unscathed. do NOT fuck with PARASITIC contamination. you should be scared of this one!
Another note: YOU CAN'T WASH IT OFF!
Only high temperatures will kill cyclospora. It resides in what is like a shell, which is highly resistant to water and most cleaning chemicals. The substance it uses to cling to food is so strong we don't even fully know what its limits are. It may be best to avoid fruits and veggies you can't cook. Scrubbing only works if done hard enough and on foods with no hiding places (Like cucumbers and grapes). Peeling the skin off is your best bet at avoiding it however, scrubbing is not guaranteed.
Thank you OP for posting! Usually washing does work on most sicknesses, just not this one.

5 - what’s your favorite piece of furniture, and where did you get it?
My favorite piece of furniture is actually the kitchen table. It’s a huge old farmhouse table that a friend of my mom’s from high school made out of beams from an old barn. It’s just such a homey, cozy table — plus it’s big enough to spread out projects. It takes up most of the kitchen 😅
6 - what’s your go-to recipe when you want to make something that requires minimal effort?
Wraps! I usually have a can of chickpeas and some garlic and tahini for making hummus. Tomatoes, parsley, feta cheese, whatever else is around. If I am feeling ambitiously lazy, I throw some cauliflower/eggplant/whatever veg I have in the oven to roast with olive oil and ras al hanout. Then— done!
16 - how long have you known your oldest friend?
Oh, gosh. That is either @iamaweretoad or my friend Marie? Either way, the answer is something like 15, 16 years? A long time!

14 and 23 for the ask? 💜
Thanks!
14 - what’s a hobby you’d like to get into?
Oh, man, there are a lot of things I would like to try. Bookbinding is definitely up there. I tried it a few times in college and really enjoyed it. If I had the time/money/etc, I think it could really be enjoyable and peaceful. Oh, and bonsai! I love my garden and my houseplants, but learning to shape and cultivate a bonsai would have to be a really fascinating journey. …I could probably keep going. There are a lot of things I would love to learn how to do. Fencing and archery are up there. But I don’t even have enough time for the hobbies I already have, whoops.
23 - what’s the coolest place you’ve visited?
that is a hard one! I’m going to say the Etruscan necropolis in Cerveteri. It’s exactly what that implies — a city-like collection of tombs at the site of the ancient Etruscan city of Caisra (near modern day Cerveteri, Lazio, Italy). It really is a fascinating place. As with most archaeological sites, it has been rather haphazardly abused by grave robbers over the years, but it’s still impressive. If you want to see something really neat, look up the Tomb of the Reliefs, which is full of carvings of important items from Etruscan life as grave offerings.

At one point, when I was in college, I had the good fortune to see an exhibition of JW Waterhouse’s work. The Musée des Beaux Arts in Montréal had mounted it, and it was — if I recall — the largest assemblage of Waterhouse’s paintings ever presented, with pieces on loan from an impressive number of museums and collections. My friend and I caught a bus from Boston overnight, and spent so long in the galleries that I think we were starting to make the security guards nervous. And it was magical.
The funny part is that one of my biggest takeaways from the experience is something exceedingly small. In the room where they were displaying The Lady of Shalott, they had also put out his sketches and notebooks — which is always a fascinating choice in a museum or gallery. Immediate thumbs up from me every time. But, in one of the sketches (a smallish thumbnail, probably for working out layout or value structure), he had indicated her face with a smiley. Truly: two dots and a curve. There, in a sketch for one of my favourite paintings, by one of the 19th century’s accepted masters. : ) It was so goofy and relatable and utterly out of keeping with the painting itself that it has always stuck with me.
So, my point is just: every time I feel frustrated or out of sorts with a sketch that just isn’t landing right, I think of Waterhouse just jotting in a smiley face for the Lady of Shalott. And you know what? It feels a little less daunting.

"There's millions of Tumblr users" to you. To me There's only about 12 and we all reblog the same five posts from each other
Final week of FLY on Kickstarter. Help us stretch our wings and consider backing on kickstarter! Every pledge brings us closer to sharing stories of empowerment with the world.
A coming of age story about Black kids who finally have power to fight back against systems designed against them.
This is your reminder today that Irene Adler in the original Conan Doyle story is literally not a criminal. She never commits a crime.
Nor is she a seductress in any kind of negative or manipulative sense - she has a mutual relationship with a powerful man who then breaks up with her, and afterwards she keeps protection against him in the form of evidence that the relationship existed. She HAS blackmail material, she even waves it at him threateningly because he treated her like shit, but she never even uses it.
Irene Adler is not a thief, femme fatale, or blackmailer. She's just a cool lady that wants to be left alone.
@delphi-star You do recall correctly!! She does not give a shit about that man! She's happily married! She tipped him for being a witness at her wedding!
If your Sherlock Holmes adaptation has a character whose identifying qualities are that she is a seductive criminal in love with Holmes, you have created a character that is basically the literal opposite of Irene Adler and you should name her something else.
I also think people misunderstand Holmes’ thoughts on her? Everyone always cites “To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name.” But I think they get the tone wrong.
I just think about the way some of my aunts/uncles/etc refer to people who have annoyed or thwarted them in some way. A daughter-in-law they don’t like will only ever be “The Wife” — said in a tone of contempt that they have to refer to her at all. It’s petulant and childish, and entirely how I have always presumed “the woman” is uttered. He’s just annoyed that Watson likes to remind him that Irene got one over on him.
They have no particular importance to one another beyond maybe two days worth of interaction.
