"Stop, stop, stop!" she screamed as Mona hoisted and shoved against the beams piled on top of Gen's lower body. She could feel herself draining out, bleeding onto the forest floor. "There isn't time, Mona. You have to go! She's escaping!"
Mona's face was streaked with tears as she shook her head violently. "Not without you, Genevieve, I'm not leaving without you." She pushed harder against one of the thicker branches covering Gen's legs.
"Mona! Mona, you have to go." Mona wasn't listening, she was still pushing against the logs, desperately trying to free her, but Gen knew that even if Mona succeeded, she would die here on this forest path.
"Mona. Mona look at me. Come here."
Mina scrambled over to Gen's side, swiping her hair off her forehead and leaning close as Genevieve's voice got weaker. "You have to be strong now, for us both. You have to save the forest. The Sorceress, she's going to finish casting her spell, and she's going to finish soon. This is what she wants. She wants you to fuss over me until it's too late and she's drained the entire realm. You won't be able to stop her then," Gen coughed, and Mona let out a small sob. "You have to go now."
"Genny... I can't. I can't do it without you, I need you, I can't. Genny I can't, don't make me leave you, please, I-" she broke off, burying her face into Genevieve's collarbone.
Gen let out a few tears of her own, not for herself, but for Mona. It didn't matter what she did now, this was going to hurt her, and above all else Genevieve hated when Mona was hurt.
"Mona... take me with you."
Mona lifted her eyes to Gen's, her expression confused. "I was trying, you made me stop."
"No. Mona. Take me with you. Use me. Whatever's left, and use it to stop her. Keep me with you, always."
"No!" But she was already reaching for Gen's hand, her pupils were already dilating beyond normal range. Gen knew that appealing to the magics was the best shot she had. And it had worked.
Their hands clasped together, and Genevieve felt it more strongly than any time before, the energy flowing out of her like a flood. She'd thought she was feeling herself drain onto the forest floor but that was nothing compared to this. The edges of her vision went hazy, but she could make out Mona's eyes, black as pitch and full of tears, and the faint glow around her best friend, the only person she had ever truly loved.
"I love you," she managed, weakly as her vision tunneled further.
"I love you, too. Always," Mona said, voice broken by sobs, and yet amplified the way it always was when the magics took over.
She leaned down and pressed her lips to Genevieve's cold ones just as her vision went black.
And then she was floating.
