Literary criticism terms I use on this blog despite making them up myself, much to the chagrin of anyone who does not have my back catalog memorized:
are we the baddies: SFF subgenre focused on agents of an imperial power realizing that and grappling with what to do next, in contrast to stories focusing on the scrappy rebels resisting said imperial power
I could fix him (the empire): SFF subgenre where the colonized subject being nice and/or sexy enough Ends Colonialism, frequently tied to the John President of Racism problem
librarian bait: books centered on the transformative life-changing power of books and libraries, cousin to books focused on the transformative life-changing power of storytelling and narrative in general
college brochure fiction: stories where the protagonist has an artfully arranged group of diverse friends who are as flat as paper and whose cultural backgrounds never come up meaningfully
the Dave Strider: character the fandom fixates on to the detriment of everything else, until the weight of that attention warps fanon and sometimes even canon around them. almost always male. it's happening to Gurathin from Murderbot right now
#OP tell us more about the John President of Racism problem!
It hails from an immortal tumblr post by penultimate-step, except not immortal apparently because I get 'not found' when I try to go back to the original. So here's the text:
It's always disappointing when a series makes a big deal about societal and structural problems in it's setting, making readers think it has interesting things to say about the subject, only to then resolve the problems by fighting The CEO of Racism, John Racist, so that all of society's problems would then get better because they promoted a new CEO.
No it's not libel if it's true
For example it's not libel to say that Israelis love killing children. They have killed more children at a higher rate in a single year than anyone else in the last two decades.
This article is almost two years old and Israel has continued targeting women and children at a disproportionate rate even after the "ceasefire"
This is a country of child killers
people like the idea that there is an identity they can claim that will absolve them of the responsibility to examine their beliefs and actions and adjust them accordingly to better align with their values and desired outcomes but there isn't, we all have to practice humility and do the work regardless

honestly it’s less about marjane satrapi and persepolis and more about how that’s the only narrative the western world views as factual or even worth reading
same thing with authors like khaled hosseini. their works show one perspective, a perspective in a sea of different experiences, one that conveniently paints western imperialist agendas in a positive light and even more conveniently becomes the only narrative ever published for western audiences
you can acknowledge someone’s experiences, but you should always ask yourself why, for example, books like this became required reading in many schools alongside other writings meant to shape your opinion a certain way about a certain region and religion
marjane satrapi was an open zionist and khaled hosseini was welcomed by george w. bush at the white house. Hosseini wrote in his fictional book Kite Runner:
"There are only three real men in this world, Amir," he'd say. He'd count them off on his fingers: America the brash savior, Britain, and Israel. "The rest of them--" he used to wave his hand and make a phht sound "--they're like gossiping old women."
In Baba's view, Israel was an island of "real men" in a sea of Arabs too busy getting fat off their oil to care for their own. "Israel does this, Israel does that," Baba would say in a mock-Arabic accent.
irritating as fuck when people get mad at Black people existing in premodern historical fiction/fantasy media. like first of all, you're racist. and second of all, you are acting as though Black people didn't exist in premodern Europe which is simply false. especially when we're talking about the Mediterranean, like what the fuck do you people think is along the southern half of the Mediterranean Ocean?? everyone's on boats, there are GOING to be interactions with Black people in Northern Africa, and there are GOING to be Black people in Mediterranean Europe. stop being stupid. your imagined homogeneous white European past is not historical reality, get over it you massive losers
Transgender woman faces two felony charges after drawing a firearm during an altercation.
A Wyoming transgender woman is facing two felony charges after drawing a firearm during an altercation she says began with anti-LGBTQ+ and a
Ríhanna Kelver, a bartender and trans rights advocate in Laramie, has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a deadly weapon with unlawful intent after a 13 September 2025 confrontation outside the Crowbar & Grill, whereshe worked. Kelver could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if convicted on both charges.
Kelver says one man in a group of men across the street from her started shouting homophobic and transphobic insults at her before the man allegedly shoved her to the ground in a downtown crosswalk, as reported by The Laramie Reporter.
There's more, as it pertains to Black trans people's right to self-defence:
Despite Wyoming’s “Stand Your Ground” statute, which allows people to use reasonable force in moments of self defense, Kelver faces up to 15 years in prison for both charges, as well as up to $11,000 in fines, per Cowboy State Daily. Kelver faces an additional year and $1,000 fine for a charge of interference with a peace officer. [...]
As pointed out by Slate, self-defense laws are often put into question when people from marginalized communities, especially trans people, use them, including Cece McDonald, a Black trans woman who served time in a men’s prison for defending her friends during a racist and transphobic attack. Ky Peterson, a Black trans man from Georgia, was also arrested and imprisoned for killing his rapist in self-defense.
with the fact that the uk race riots are happening in belfast too perhaps white usamericans/canadians can stop pretending that being irish or having irish ancestry inherently makes someone progressive or anti racist lol idk why they became convinced of this but it does my head in

On one street, hundreds of masked men carrying bottles and bricks set bins on fire and shouted "foreigners out", our reporter says.
i really don't have the words for how things have escalated to outright race riots in the last few weeks. just to collect a few of the stories the bbc is reporting in their live thread:
Families led to safety through flames (Dan Johnson) Homes were targeted and burned. Families had to be led to safety through the flames - rescued by emergency services risking their lives in the most dangerous situation. It’s what the authorities feared all day. What they warned against and pleaded not to see. The condemnation came quickly and was widespread. It wasn’t just homes, cars were also torched by young masked man in these predominantly unionist streets but the target here was immigrants and the message to entirely innocent families was: "You’re not welcome". In the north of the city, more people were forced to flee including an African family who’ve lived here for 20 years.
People being put out 'because they're black' - pastor A pastor who has been helping those in houses targeted in tonight's violence says people were being put out of their homes "because they're black". Pastor Jack McKee was at the scene where multiple houses were on fire around the Crumlin Road in north Belfast - he says some members of his church "who have been with us for 20 years" were "getting put out of their home, had their house attacked, windows smashed, houses beside them burned". "They're good Christian people and they're getting put out just because they're black," he says. "I'm doing my best to help them, it's as simple as that." [...]
Masked men shouting 'foreigners out' (Kelly Bonner) Last night on the Lower Newtownards Road in Belfast hundreds of masked men walked down the street carrying bottles, bricks and masonry. They set bins on fire and shouted "foreigners out". As they walked street to street, they were banging on doors, kicking doors down and breaking windows. Masked man set cars alight and at one point I witnessed them trying to burn a car until a woman came out of her home and told them it belonged to a "local and not a foreigner" and they stopped. A young family had to be moved from their home by police. The scenes of this young family fleeing their home were really quite shocking.
We're seeing a 'race-based pogrom' in Belfast, MP tells BBC Claire Hanna, Belfast MP and leader of the Social Democratic & Labour Party, has spoken to Newsnight about the "nightmarish" attack on Monday, which she says has "understandably revulsed and shocked" people in Belfast. However, she condemned the scenes that erupted on Tuesday afternoon, suggesting that "negative actors online and politicians locally who don't really care what communities in north Belfast have been through" have used the knife attack to incite violence and seed division. "What you're seeing is a race-based pogrom. We are seeing men going door to door asking to get the foreigners out based exclusively on the colour of their skin," she has said. "It's not based on what they're contributing to society, what their status here is and it's terrifying for people in Belfast who want this sort of politics to be far beyond them."

Daily reminder to Americans on this website that American war on Iran is bad because Iranians are getting killed not because you can no longer afford going to the movies in the weekends or refill your car 😒
Y'know what, this reminder also includes non-Americans. Let's watch our words and keep the victims of American aggressions in our heart always
'Yeah yeah, it sucks that some Iranians are going to die, but don't you know the real victims are Americans who have to deal with higher grocery and gas prices in the US?? Why are you, OP from the Global South, so mean to Americans who make themselves the centre and main victims of every US imperialist aggression??'
Americans seeing a post by a Global Southerner reminding both Americans and non-Americans that the victims of the US bombing Iran are Iranians who are actually being massacred, not anyone in the US: Uh, don't you stupid hater trolls understand that the US killing hundreds of Iranians AND groceries being more expensive in the US - I am not going to question how US imperialism plays into why groceries in the US were previously more affordable in the first place - are both bad?? WE ARE ALL VICTIMS OF THE US BOMBING IRAN!! WE ALL BLEED RED!! No, I wouldn't trade places with someone in Iran right now, why would you ask that??
There's a perversity to the "moral logic" of modern imperialism, in the sense that it's willing, to an extent, to criticise itself. It will admit to bombing, ruining, killing, raping, and destabilising countries insofar as some distant and oppositional Other remains worse. We bombed Libya, Iraq, etc., but Russia is worse! Our transnational corporations and financial institutions may be exploiting Africa and the developing world, but China is worse! We may repress people, but North Korea is worse!
They don't need to be morally pure, just kings of the shitheap of their own design. And it doesn't even need to be true. They simply need to make this moral asymmetry appear true because they own the media, dominate international institutions, and write the cheques of academics who produce the knowledge that reassures them that, no matter how shit-stained and blood-encrusted their faces are, they'll always be cleaner than the enemy. Then they convince most people of that too.

"The native intellectual, at the beginning of his career, tries to give proof of the fact that he has assimilated the culture of the occupying power... The native intellectual who goes back to his people wears European clothes, and in the way he speaks, in his mannerisms, he shows that he has adopted the very forms of the colonizer. The colonizer is right, he says, the colonizer has conquered and we must take his place. We must prove to him... that we can do as much as he can. The native intellectual, in short, wants to be recognized by the colonizer." — The Wretched of the Earth, Chapter 4: "On National Culture"
