St. John attempts to own Jane's soul. Whether one believes in a soul or not, in the world of Jane Eyre it's very real, and the foundation of the book. Jane's soul being entirely her own, and free, is the whole point.

Jane literally hears Edward calling out to her at the perfect time to save her from St. John. This is not supposed to be possibly a hallucination; like the blasted tree warning her to run from Rochester in the first place, this psychic connection is explicitly facilitated by God at this point. She must run away from Rochester to be free, but now that he's changed, he can help her (without his knowledge) to free herself from a much worse man.

I hate the push that you can quit addictions by pure willpower because it perpetuates the idea that people who can't have committed a moral failing of some kind. We all may know some people who did quit an addiction cold turkey, and with no aid, you may be one of them. And that's fantastic, but it is not the norm. It is more than okay to need help to quit an addiction. Relapse is also part of the process. Many people relapse several times before they are able to quit for good. Let's have compassion.

Not gonna lie this makes me a bit irritated. Here's the real version of this photo:

Instead of a cutesie reference to film censorship it was an explicit statement of defiance of Maryland's criminalization gay sex, which was not repealed until 2002. This wasn't a guy saying "Oh they can't put what I do in the movies according to a completely voluntary industry code" he was saying "The State of Maryland wants to put me in jail for being gay and having gay sex."

It wasn't a guy being cheeky about sex in an ambiguous, cute way. It was a man stating, in no uncertain terms, that a whole state of the United States considered him a criminal for being homosexual.

I had to listen to the audiobook and it is the funniest fucking thing I've ever heard Christian sounds exactly how I'd imagine harden from after to sound which is ironic because everyone has a British accent in a book that can barely resemble being based in London at all
