So the other day I got a question about my timeline, specifically involving Basil/Parsley. I love when this comes up because I get to prove it out and stamp out years of Natsume's bad localization decisions every. single. time.
Magical Melody's Basil and Save The Homeland's Parsley are the same person. No, this is NOT the same person as 64's Basil.
And here's why:

The other image on the right is "Parsley" (Basil!!!!!!!) from Save the Homeland's official guide book. They share the same details, except the age of 21 which you only find out in Save the Homeland. The Basil married to Lillia in 64 (or married to Anna in BTN) is a different Basil, with a birthday of Summer 11 and an age of 36.
But wait, here's more! (also from the Magical Melody blurb)
Common places to find him: Exploring caves, souvenir shops, wandering all over the village Likes: Strawberries, Pontata roots, herbal tea, tomato juice, grass juice, corn, various herbs, etc. Dislikes: Mayonnaise, scrap ore, failed dishes, sautรฉed poisonous mushrooms Background: A recurring character seen in various places throughout the series' history.

It's no surprise that Bokumono has its own version of Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy, given that Wada and the team over at Game Freak + Atsuko Nishida were on good terms with each other! (You can even find a rival child wearing a Pikachu hat in HM64!)
But sure, that might not be concrete enough evidence for you - dear reader who might ask "but how can Basil be a rival for both Nina and married to Lillia if not for being an AU?!" - and I get that! So here's an official comment from Wada about the world setting of Magical Melody.

And even after all of that, Theodore is the mayor of SNES Flowerbud Village and Magical Melody's Flowerbud Village. His grandson Thomas is the mayor in 64. Ellen - an original bachelorette from SNES/MM - is a granny by HM64, and the last of her era's residents. 64Karen's grandmother is Eve, and 64Ran and 64Gray's grandmother is Ann! There's definitely been more than 60 years in between. There's no way those two Basils are the same person after all that time!

One of the more important considerations for the series is understanding when something is expanded information versus retconned/remake information.
SNES -> ็งๅ ด็ฉ่ช
Harvest Moon 64 -> ็งๅ ด็ฉ่ช2 (Sequel)
Save the Homeland -> ็งๅ ด็ฉ่ช3 (64 Prequel in the same way as SNES is a 64 Prequel)
Magical Melody -> ็งๅ ด็ฉ่ชใใใใใฎ่ฉฉ (Retcon)
Hero of Leaf Valley -> ็งๅ ด็ฉ่ชใทใฅใฌใผๆใจใฟใใชใฎ้กใ (Remake)
Everything established in SNES and 64 were when the team was first building out the world and its lore. Save the Homeland coming in after 64 doesn't negate the fact that it exists as a prequel; it's simply expanding the world with updated information and adding more context.
Magical Melody is filed under Retcon because it takes both games and creates a new narrative about that select time. Despite the fact that there are new characters, it adds to the existing relationship framework they had built with SNES, 64, and STH and proves out the established relationship of Sugar Valley and Flowerbud Village. The main difference is the functionality of the town (and main location) and the story that revolves around the goddess a bit more than its preceding titles.
Hero of Leaf Valley is a remake with additional information about that specific period in time. New characters like Magical Melody, but ultimately the same narrative - Leisure Land is going to bulldoze the valley if you don't do something to stop it.
Okay, so if Basil from Magical Melody isn't the same as the Basil from 64, are you telling me that Lillia is in a familial marriage? ๐ญ
Well, no*. Like, it could be possible because who knows what happened in that 60 yrs or so between Sugar Village and Flowerbud Village, but Lillia and co. are actually more likely related to Lyla :)

I was talking to my friends about how Rick's Moonlight Night dialogue changed in each game :) I love SoSFoMT's translation and emotion best, but BtN's egg yolk line is just so cute

Do not worry about them! I appreciate all your archiving of this series. My mother married at 18 and had my oldest sibling at 19. It was not uncommon to marry young although nowadays it is rarer and rarer. My grandmother married at 16 to my grandfather who was 18. They were farming people too. My mother was born when my grandmother was 18. I was told it is not odd but it was odd to be unmarried in your 20's. Times have changed and HM reflects older times.

I am not worried! There's nuance in understanding that it is a thing that did occur then (and still does now!) and also being uncomfortable with it today. You can be both things. I am only focused on accuracy! :)
I am not interested in covering up pieces of this series for the comfort of others. I like dissecting media, especially when it comes to my favorite interest ๐
My ideal is having pretty much every aspect of the series covered and documented, as much as possible, whether that falls into comfortable or uncomfortable topics. From your tags about Popuri reminds me of info I saw online that says Sasha from HM 64 is 39, Gotz is 46 and Karen is 23 (estimated)...so Sasha would have been 16 and Gotz 23 when Karen was born!
