This recently published, free-to-access article is one of the best summaries I’ve ever read of the critiques of conventional weight science. From the lack of evidence of an “obesity epidemic” to the “obesity paradox” (higher BMIs can be health protective) to the evidence that weight-based interventions are making people sicker, they’ve concentrated the best work in the field here and cited heavily. It’s also a very hopeful picture for future approaches to weight and health!

There is virtually no evidence that overall health is negatively affected by high BMI. There is virtually no evidence that ‘anti-obesity’ initiatives or programs have any effect on a population’s weight. Long-term studies of weight loss programs that follow participants after the weight has been lost find that 95% of participants regain the weight within 2-5 years, along with significantly worsened health problems associated with weight cycling. Not only does weight stigma result in negative psychological and physiological effects, but there is evidence, ironically, of a direct causal pathway between experiencing weight stigma and weight gain. By contrast, Health at Every Size program participants do show improvements in both psychological and physiological areas, particularly regarding positive self-image, stress levels, and intuitive eating. HAES also rejects the idea that we are all personally, morally responsible for pursuing perfect health, and that we are personally to blame if we get sick - the literature just doesn’t support the assertion that we personally have that much control over it, and any control we do have is usually directly related to social privileges or the lack thereof, such as income/poverty, race/immigration status, and gender.

I’m going to miss this place. There’s not an inch of this city that wasn’t built from the fierce wilderness that surrounds it. Hurricanes, floods, fevers. we only get a little over $800/month from my mom’s disability and we’ve already spent a lot of it on stuff like the electric bill, our cats, my mom’s medicine, etc
