I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.

Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!

When I was 8 years old, I was jumpscared by a skeleton in a picture book. I had a panic attack. As a result of the panic attack, I had a psychotic break that lasted about 3 years.

It wasn’t the book’s fault.

If my parents had noticed I had anxiety (and it shouldn’t have been hard; apparently I almost completely stopped talking at age 5) and had treated me for it, I probably wouldn’t have had the panic attack.

If my parents hadn’t immersed me in religion 24/7 and hadn’t constantly referred to bad or scary things as demonic, I wouldn’t have believed that the panic attack and subsequent intrusive thoughts were evidence that invisible demons were chasing me.

If my parents hadn’t regularly hit me, I would’ve felt safe talking to my parents about my experiences, and they might have been able to help me.

Medical neglect, abuse, and religion hurt me. A scary image was simply the last straw. If it wasn’t that, something else would have come along in the next few years with similar results.

I grew up. I learned that books couldn’t hurt me (except papercuts), I learned that there was a name for what I experienced and it wasn’t “demons,” I learned that there were medicines to treat it, and I learned that atheism and agnosticism existed. I learned about sexuality and gender, and the alienation that I’d felt since I was 12 suddenly made sense. All from books and websites that were freely available, most at school, local, or university libraries.
