She denies the journey as an execution even when, as Simon insists, there’s no need to lie. There’s not enough of us left to be throwing lives away. After the third time Simon tries to apologize without a sorry for the camara, she tries to forgive him without a sorry, too. She sounds guilty and defeated when she admits she doesn’t know his name. She offers her name, first. She softly says this isn’t punishment. It’s not fair. She tries to give him hope, It might sound crazy but we have gotten people out before. She says it’s worth it. She says it’s bigger than us. But it’s not. Simon is right. Some bone fragment was never going to be worth this torture. They were grasping at straws. The black box was a fluke. Ava was lying since the beginning, but she’s lying because she needs to believe it. She reaches out to Simon because she doesn’t want him dead and because she’s convincing herself that she isn’t actually killing and torturing him. That it’s a calculated risk.

i’ve been utterly captivated by @neonthewrite’s Grace by Inches fic for the past week. it’s like if the book was also the movie and also if he was really really small on top of that and it’s REALLY GOOD

here’s a scene and a bit i decided to sketch out! spoilers for chapters 8 and 13:

They’re the only meals that had ‘uncooked’ fruits and veg inside. While Stratt (canonically) shelled out to get them amazing tasting food, it’s still space food. But he hopes.

They, and a few saved beans and seeds from a handful of other meals, sit in a nice insulated lockbox tucked behind one of Rocky’s expanded Xenonite tunnels. He didn’t want the temptation.

But he’s not the one tempted. Rocky knows it is necessary. He hates it the way he hates Stratt. It is necessary, but it is hurting Grace and he hates it.

How easy it would be to remove the Xenonite. To guide Grace over just before bed, or right when he wakes up. When Grace can’t quite think, and is too tired and hungry and in pain to do anything unless Rocky makes him, and tell him to eat. To have his friend back for a few short hours, a day.
