The rule could have heavy impacts towards trans people across society.
Last week, the Trump administration quietly released a sweeping new federal rule that would use funding threats to force institutions across the country to reject transgender people. The 400-page proposed regulation would codify the administration's anti-trans executive orders into binding federal policy, imposing a blanket prohibition on federal funds going toward "gender ideology"
The proposed rule, formally titled "Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance," rewrites the government-wide framework governing all federal grants across every agency. Among its most consequential provisions, it requires that before a federal grant recipient can receive money, the award must pass a "pre-issuance review" conducted by a political appointee—not a career expert or peer reviewer—to ensure it is "consistent with applicable law, Federal agency priorities, and the national interest." The regulation explicitly instructs these appointees to screen for "denial by the recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic." [...] An institution that acknowledges transgender people exist—through its policies, its training, its healthcare, its bathroom access, its HR procedures, its name-change processes—could be deemed to "deny the sex binary" or to “support the notion that sex is mutable” and have its federal funding blocked.
Importantly, the gender ideology prohibition has no age limitation—hospitals could be targeted not just for providing care to minors but for providing gender-affirming care to adults, because prescribing hormone therapy to a transgender patient of any age could be deemed promoting the belief that "sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic."

"sex is what's in your chromosomes" is not a neutral statement. that's one of the main reductive oversimplifications that the right have been pushing about sex for years. sex is a combination of physical characteristics, many of which can be changed or removed in the process of medical transition. I cannot wrap my head around why other trans people are so happy to uphold regressive binaristic thinking like this
my eternal personal bugbear about "authenticity" in specifically artwork is the central irony that a given piece will only be accepted and understood as suuuuper authentic and raw and real if it matches what the audience perceives as the artist's True Self. "authenticity" has a look, it has a style, it has a vocabulary, it has a hierarchy of materials and media, it should be folk craft or handmade over industrial or digital, it should be emotional and warm over detached and bitter, and obviously it should look pre-21st century because as we all know no one has ever existed honestly since the turn of the millennium and all Authentic Culture died to death badly in 1990. I've heard tons of artists in marginalized groups repeatedly get the feedback that they should make their art "more authentic" and more "reflective of their identities" by people who clearly just mean "make it look more like the stereotype I expect from you." it's a framework that relies on the idea that the only real representation of a culture or identity comes when you strip away all its interrelations with other groups, as though cross-cultural exchange and technological innovation aren't constants throughout human history.

My friend Nader recently became an uncle to his newborn baby niece, Masa. Due to the traumatic stress and malnutrition experienced under genocidal conditions, many mothers cannot produce breast-milk. Masa, like tens of thousands of other babies in Gaza, relies on formula to survive. Today, Nader told me that this little girl is in the hospital now due to a severe chest infection. She is only 8 days old. Please help her.
I woke up today to the tears of my brother's wife, the mother of little Masa, who is suffering from a severe chest infection and is currently in the hospital under medical care. If you're masculine you can only be non-binary and if you're femme you can only be genderqueer.

Like they could just very easily say transmasc/transfem, like that would convey what they're trying to say so much more. Like it's not because I'm transmasc that I need to be masculine, I can be feminine.
Also genderqueer and non-binary have nothing to do with masc/fem and should not be associated with any since the entire point behind those two words are that people do not fit into the man/woman gender binary, so why force them into a look binary??
Idk what the marketing team at UNTAG is doing but it looks like shit...
What pisses me off the most though, is that of the transfem and transmasc trans gear shops I've seen around, UNTAG is the best of them all.
There are still issues, like why the heck is it called "packing underwear" but "tucking undies"???? Like huh?????
But overall it was nice, there was no MTF (shit we forgot about them) category. For both the transmasculine and transfeminine sides there was a fair amount of gear and not a large discrepancy like other shops.
So yeah, to see that they just... decided to conflate non-binarity with masculine traits/looks and genderqueerness with feminine trait/looks is fucking annoying.
And it is about the look and not about the social classes of transmasculine/transfeminine because they used the term "femme" and not "fem". And if they actually did meant that, then there's a clear lack of understanding of terms here. And it sucks ass for a shop aimed at trans people to not fucking know trans terms.
So yeah lmaooo no shops (other than a few specific transfem only ones), of all the ones you can see on my list, are good allies. They all fuck up somewhere. And when they fuck up it's ALWAYS the vocabulary being weird/fucked up and/or clear transmisogyny.

People don't get that non passing trans women are not seen as men, they are seen as non passing trans women and are treated the way they are according to the social script for trans women, which is transmisogyny.
Something that happens a lot in non-binary spaces is that a new member of the community will ask a tone-deaf transphobic question like "Hi, AFAB here, I was wondering if any other AFAB NBs had advice about swimsuits? My AFAB chest means I can't wear swimsuits for AMABs," and an established community member will have to gently explain that not only are we are a community of people who often change their bodies to a degree that certificated sex becomes a useless way to describe anatomy, but we are also a community of people who often join the community explicitly to get away from our birth sex assignment, and so referring to people that way can be really offensive.
And no matter how gently this is pointed out, the newbie will often initially feel instinctively defensive towards what they perceive as scolding. Which means that when another community member comes along and says "Don't worry about the language police 🙄, many of us think AGAB language is fine, it's a useful way to refer to the kind of formative experiences you had as a child," the newbie will latch on to them like a life raft.
And yes, we live in a transphobic society, a lot of people coming into the trans community will have uninterrogated transphobic views, but that just makes them more vulnerable when there is always someone in the community willing to tell them "no, your transphobic views are fine actually, and in fact here are some more you might not have thought of!"
It means a sizeable chunk of newly-out NBs are swiftly radicalised into increasingly extreme transphobia and transmisogyny simply as a defense mechanism against having their own comments criticised. One day they're just happy to join a community where people supposedly don't judge you on your birth sex, and the next they're talking about the importance of "AGAB socialisation".
It's a really big problem and I don't know what we can do about it.
