I think it's linguistically very interesting that Americans have come up with phrases like "I don't believe in [X thing or concept that very much exists]" and "[something/someone] makes me uncomfortable", the former betrays a very belief-centered mindset where material reality doesn't matter (the sentence "I don't believe in vaccines" should not make sense, it's like saying you don't believe in lamps, but what it really means is that they personally don't like/agree with it) and the latter phrase for example can't even be translated properly into my native language afaik. In Slovene you can say that you are uncomfortable, but you can't just fully make it about someone/something else. You can feel uncomfortable, a conversation can be uncomfortable (adjective), but your feeling of discomfort is yours, nobody is making you feel that way.
Which might not sound like a big deal but there's a huge difference between admitting that you're uncomfortable in the presence of large dogs VS saying that large dogs actively make you uncomfortable. Like they're not doing anything, the large dogs are just there, you're the one who's feeling uncomfortable, it's an emotion you are feeling.
Another American phrase I have a issue with is "I feel like" when you're expressing an opinion. Why are you saying "feel" when "think" is right there? If I had to guess, I'd say that you don't want to take full ownership of what you're saying. Thoughts and opinions are seen as more open to criticism than feelings.
I think it's all pretty telling. Also, the worst part is that it's spreading to other languages too. We have to actively resist the influence of the American mindset.
I don't think Americans realize how odd it is to put that much weight on feelings, and to speak as if you have no agency over them.
"I feel like this is true" to me means you're admitting you have no idea. Feelings are an internal process happening only in your own brain, they're as subjective and irrational as you can get. So when I hear Americans say things like "this is my truth", they just sound like they're detached from reality and not a all concerned with being factual.
If you're a teacher and you tell the class that 2+2 equals 4, and a student says "I don't feel like that's true", there's nowhere you can go from there... You can't have a conversation about material reality with someone who can just pull out that phrase and protect themselves from having to think too hard about anything. That's not a sentence that should make sense. Unless you've internalized a culture that knocked knowledge off of its pedastal and replaced it with feelings.
ive invented (note: dubious claim) something i call the bear diet which is mostly fruits and vegetables with fish as the main protein source and something like once a month you eat a few hyperprocessed foods of your liking because that is when you, the bear, raid a dumpster in the suburbs
âWe are descended from the Witches you couldnât burn!â
Itâs a nice sentiment, I like the energy, I do. That said, I am actually descended from a âSalem Witch,â and my Ancestor, Mary Isham Towne, was not burnt at the stake, she was hanged by the neck until dead. Weâre not savages yâknow.
Furthermore, Mary Isham Towne was a churchgoing, god-fearing woman, who just so happened to be a widow who owned a piece of land that the local judge wanted to purchase, but which she refused to sell, and which he set out to acquire pretty much immediately after he sentenced her execution.
So, yâknow.
My Grandmother on the other side was a practitioner of Womenâs Reproductive Health for two decades in NYC, through the 70s & 80s. She and I had many illuminating conversations over the years about the ways in which Women are mistreated and what can be done to address it.
Her own mother had nearly bled out on their kitchen floor, once, when she was just a girl.
Great-Grandmother had had a brief affair, you see, and although she had ended it and reconciled with her husband, a bastard grew within her. Certain moralizing individuals might say that she should create an entire person as a punishment for a temporary transgression, but she was more humanitarian than that, and she had sought a then-illegal abortion. The practitioner had been more of the witchy type, and was untrained in proper medicine, and it very nearly killed Nana.
Grandmother never forgot.
And neither will I.

There is only one way for us to truly be a Civilized people, and it is by enshrining material protections for all citizens in law. The possession of a penis cannot be a prerequisite for the ownership of property, or a bank account, or indeed of your own body.
Protections for Women to decide about their own lives, from the ability to own a business, to the freedom to get a private and professionally performed abortion, must be enshrined in law, and enforced by those responsible for such.
I am descended from the Witches Who Were Hanged, and their ghosts whisper to me: that this fight is far from over, and far more important than many give it credit for, and that we cannot let our guard down for even one generation, lest the likes of Peter Thiel and Donald Trump send us back into a Dark Age.
Learn your history. Fight for your Sisters.

The biggest bullshit with Adultism is basically that the people will defend it with: "Well, if we did not force X on kids, kids would not do it, because they hate X."
And then you actually look onto the research.
Kids do not generally hate learning or school. Quite the opposite. Children tend to enjoy learning and are naturally curious. It is exactly the fact that they are forced into school and into the rigid structure of it that often punishes curiosity but also is hostile towards the differences inherent in people, that kids hate it.
Kids do not naturally hate medical care. While medical care is scary at times, the fear usually comes from medical care scenarios being defined by adults overriding a child's agency, not explaining things to him, and otherwise being abusive, that makes children afraid of medical procedures. Additionally the way a lot of medical procedures go hand in hand with denying a child's reality ("Look, it is not that bad") tends to be traumatizing to children.
There have been studies done in this. If you explain a child - even a toddler - what you do and why, children will generally be a lot more okay with stuff like needles and simple procedures, and will even agree to necessary surgical interventions.
If you create a learning environment that allows more for self-directed learning, and involves less specific testing, most kids actually will enjoy learning.
The way kids hate school, and are afraid of doctors is the result of those interactions being associated with violence and coercion. The hatred is because of the coercion, rather than the hatred making the coercion necessary.
youd think a band named violent femmes would be made up of violent femmes. but it isnt. its dudes

alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
Question 2/3
How often do you visit or interact with museums/archives (whether in person or online)?
Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)
Rarely (once every couple of years)
Never :(
Question 3/3
If you saw a museum was using AI in exhibits, marketing, research, etc., would you be more or less inclined to visit that museum?
under 18, more inclined
under 18, less inclined
18-29, more inclined
18-29, less inclined
30-45, more inclined
30-45, less inclined

i know folks are gonna call me a pedo for this one, but i grew up seeing my mom and grandma naked. they had health issues and at times needed care and help showering. and i truly think more kids need to be shown the nonsexual reality of naked women at a young age. there is nothing sexual about my grandmothers breasts, they were simply body parts. more women die of heart attacks because people are too afraid of breasts to do real chest compressions, because they are scared to touch their breasts. the sexualization of our bodies literally kills us. i need people to be more normal about naked bodies and i'm 100% serious.
I think it's really funny that reading the discworld witch books (at least the ones that are Weatherwax+Ogg+Magrat), Granny immediately seems like the scariest one by far. She seems like a terrifying force of nature accompanied by a jovial old grandma and an insecure young woman. But as the series progress, the times when Granny holds back and Nanny and Magrat jovially engage in brutal physical violence add up. Now I'm not saying you *shouldn't* be scared of Granny, I'm just saying that she has a rather strong conscience in her way, whereas Magrat and Nanny will both sucker punch you, kick you between the legs and happily step over your groaning body. Granny is to be feared, but Nanny doesn't fight fair and Magrat will kill a motherfucker. Terry Pratchett really knew how to write female characters.
Too right to stay in the tags

#Granny fears what she might do too much to ever do it #the other two have no such limiter #because Magrat believes sheâs a good person #and Nanny doesnât care
#my wife is on the SOR for being gay #no joke #she hit on a girl in a straight bar once #in 1997 #and while the girl was into it #the off duty cop sitting nearby was not #and so he arrested her for âsoliciting homosexual activityâ #which in our state was still a felony #in 1997 (and would remain so until Lawrence v Texas in 2003) #and since âsoliciting homosexual activityâ was a felony and a sex crime #she got put on The List #she is still on there to this day #because it costs MONEY to ask a judge to take you off #and she has tried four times#since 2003 #to get taken off the SOR #but every time the judge has said something like âno you pled guilty to the crime i canât possibly take you off the sex offender registryâ #with no acknowledgement of what the actual crime was #(the crime of being a butch lesbian hitting on a cute girl who was into it) #(in 1997)

Younger queer people need to realize that the SOR being used against queer people simply for being queer isnât some ancient history thing. It still impacts queer people today. And it can quite easily be used that way again.
Listen!
When you hear people throwing around the talking point of âwell thereâs a high rate of sex offenders in the trans/queer communityâ, this has to do with why.
Being on the sex offender registry isnât inherently equivalent to whatever horrific sex crime youâre meant to think of when itâs mentioned. It evokes imagery of pedophilia and rape, but there is a lot that can get you put on it and not a lot you can do to be taken off of it.
Public crossdressing used to be able to get you put on the sex offender registry (and by used to I mean as recently as 2011).
Public urination (you know, the literal only option for someone whoâs homeless and doesnât have access to public bathrooms, a venn diagram where trans people are more likely to rest in the meeting zone) can get you put on the sex offender registry.
Sex work is pretty much an automatic way to end up on the sex offender registry if youâre caught. (This is especially weaponized against black trans women who do sex work)
âDeviant Sexual Intercourseâ (aka literally any sexual activity aside from penis-in-vagina penetration) could get you on the sex offender registry as recently as the early 2000s. That effectively impacts the entire queer community in one way or another.
The sex offender registry is, first and foremost, useless. It tells you nothing about what someone did. Itâs mentioned to quickly associate a person or a group of people with the worst possible crimes imaginable.
It has been used against us time after time and it will continue to be used for that.
And this is where the push of purity discourse in fandom shows its fetid, fascist underbelly.
This is why they are making being trans in public a felony in some states.
When you decide that people who commit a certain crime or category of crime should legally lose their humanity, you create incentive for more people to be charged with that crime.
But, is your current President on that list? đ¤đ¤đ¤
In a hypothetical future in which Trump loses power and the Democrats grow a spine and try to sue him, I donât want The State to be able to take away Donal Trumpâs human rights.
I will throw a party if the next shooter hits their mark.
But I donât want The State to be able to take away Donal Trumpâs human rights. Because I donât want The State to be able to take away anyoneâs human rights.
Because the moment they can (which is right now), they target marginalized people. They target refugees. They target trans people. They target people of color. They target disabled people. Theyâre doing it all right now. Oppressing minorities is What States Do.
The potential joy I would feel if the state punished 1 evil billionaire isnât worth the harm to millions of people that always always results from the state having that power.

i would rather see the information for an event handwritten in sharpie on a paper towel than see another AI generated flyer
Saving this post to show my boss who I told the AI flier makes us look lazy and ignorant, and offered to hand draw one. She still printed tons of ai fliers and I'm tempted to make a better one just because it annoys me so much.
Fun update: event was canceled because literally nobody rsvp'd to the AI flier.
