Unironically I think this meme is really good for explaining why maths formalisms and notation are so valuable, even when they seem cumbersome/convoluted. It's an incredibly precise way to describe the interaction of a lot of related-but-meaningfully-distinct concepts, and this is a great showcase of that, thank you Lynn Chordbug you're the best.
我 I
For what it's worth this might be the funniest joke I've ever made
stop letting miserable people on the internet convince you that you must have a concrete, well-constructed opinion on everything that has ever existed.

puttering around the house is an underrated form a self-care. make some tea or coffee. put on a podcast. sort the mail. tidy some pillows and fold some blankets. start the laundry. thaw some soup. just casually wander around aimlessly doing little things to make your space and life a little nicer. who cares if you get distracted or only do a little. you aren't being productive. you're puttering.
My life has gotten measurably better since I reframed the period from 3-4 pm as “puttering hour”. No it’s not me avoiding work or failing to force myself to concentrate during my mid afternoon slump. It’s puttering hour.
At the local hamburger shop and they said yelled out “order 167!” And three middle school age kids yelled in perfect unison “ 6 7!” Life is sometimes so beautiful
If you reference 67 you deserve to be executed on the spot tbh
If I was king for a day the first thing I would do would be to sentence you to a life full of love and understanding.
the solution to the Mathematician's Lament is to teach calculus in early grade school if not kindergarten & i am being 100% unironic
Why playing with algebraic and calculus concepts—rather than doing arithmetic drills—may be a better way to introduce children t
The familiar, hierarchical sequence of math instruction starts with counting, followed by addition and subtraction, then multiplication and division. The computational set expands to include bigger and bigger numbers, and at some point, fractions enter the picture, too. Then in early adolescence, students are introduced to patterns of numbers and letters, in the entirely new subject of algebra. A minority of students then wend their way through geometry, trigonometry and, finally, calculus, which is considered the pinnacle of high-school-level math.
But this progression actually “has nothing to do with how people think, how children grow and learn, or how mathematics is built,” says pioneering math educator and curriculum designer Maria Droujkova. She echoes a number of voices from around the world that want to revolutionize the way math is taught, bringing it more in line with these principles.
The current sequence is merely an entrenched historical accident that strips much of the fun out of what she describes as the “playful universe” of mathematics, with its more than 60 top-level disciplines, and its manifestations in everything from weaving to building, nature, music and art. Worse, the standard curriculum starts with arithmetic, which Droujkova says is much harder for young children than playful activities based on supposedly more advanced fields of mathematics.
“Calculations kids are forced to do are often so developmentally inappropriate, the experience amounts to torture,” she says. They also miss the essential point—that mathematics is fundamentally about patterns and structures, rather than “little manipulations of numbers,” as she puts it. It’s akin to budding filmmakers learning first about costumes, lighting and other technical aspects, rather than about crafting meaningful stories.

wife scored a free laptop from work and gave it to me, so i'm using macos for the first time in a while. and holy shit did they make this OS a piece of useless garbage. what do you mean there's a system setting for automatically changing my actual keyboard inputs based on what your stupid fucking autocorrect algorithm thinks i'm trying to type? i put up with this on a phone v reluctantly because it's much easier to fat-finger an input on a phone and correct typos is slower. even then sometimes it "corrects" a perfectly valid dictionary word into a different word... just because? literally every time i type the word "come" on my phone it changes to "coke." this is sufficiently annoying i have tried turning off all spellchecking and autocorrecting entirely, and unfortunately my thumbs are just too fat to make that work. even still, it's infuriating--not only do even mildly out-of-distribution but perfectly common well formed english words get "corrected" ("dicked," as in "dicked around" > "picked") but you're correcting an extremely common word for one that's either a brand name or a much less common noun.
but why the hell would i want this on a laptop or desktop OS?? and turning this off doesn't automatically disable it for textedit and apparently the toggles in textedit don't even reliably work???
both bad design and proof that most of the people who design UIs are like freaking space aliens when it comes to their understanding of what i might actually want out of a computer. a device i have to fight in order to input all but the most anodyne text is a horrible idea! definitionally any text that is going to be interesting enough to be useful will be out of distribution in significant ways!
Last night, two earthquakes hit the city of Caracas in Venezuela. So far, reports show a death toll of 164 people, with nearly a thousand injured. Multiple hospitals and health centers have begun taking in patients and continue to expand their capacity to serve everyone in the area, and Interim President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a State of Emergency.
If you are able, please consider donating to the Venezuela Humanitarian Fund. They dispense donations out to local organizations on the ground in Venezuela, and you can donate as little as 2 dollars. If you know of any local organizations who are able to take donations online, please share them.
I am lucky in that my friends and their families from and in Venezuela are okay, and my heart is with everyone affected by this disaster.
The death toll has risen to 589 dead and over 3,000 injured with hundreds of people still missing.
There are, of course, tons of local organizations and efforts ongoing. These often involving donating through Zelle or other mobile pay apps and I know that many people are less likely to donate if there are ‘extra steps.’
In light of this, I’ve added a few larger, “easier”organizations providing aid in Venezuela rn that you can donate to.
I Love Venezuela
World Central Kitchen
CORE
Direct Relief
International Rescue Committee
If you’d like links to some local orgs/action feel free to reach out.
I just remembered that this was a thing that was HILARIOUS in 2006 and apparently that was ten years ago now.
Old people: join with me in remembering how funny we found this on LiveJournal.
Young people: look at this lolrus, it’s so happy, it has a bucket.
And then they stealed away the bucket and we realised we had fucked up a perfectly good elephant seal and given it anxiety.
listen this vintage meme is high quality and i will hear nothing said against it
20 years. I am not happy about this.
I’m delighted at the bucket reappearing but dismayed at the passage of time
Happy 20 years to Lolrus and his bucket!

Hey, we’re in line for some absurd temperatures here in the southwest this week. This is very important to know and keep in mind. Be safe, stay hydrated, stay out of the sun as much as you can.
For my fellow Europeans south of us who are currently suffering from extreme heat. Stay safe!
I’d also like to add this
Additional you can also put them on your palms, also, make sure to always use a light towel or kitchen paper and don’t put the ice bags directly onto your skin!
