Remember Me

I was tagged by the lovely @dragon-swords-prophecies to find the word fall, tired, lost and time. Thank you, Copper! These were very good words and there were far too many fun options to choose from. (Especially for Fall and Time.) It was hard to choose just one of each!

Fall (from "Rook's Horrible, Very Bad, No-Good Day #2")

“Rook, you need to stay awake. Just a little bit longer, until a healer can have a look at you.” Sigmar’s voice was serious as he half-dragged, half-carried Rook down the hall of the Winters’ manor.  Rook groaned in response. He was exhausted, and every inch of his body ached. He wanted nothing more than to close his eyes and fall headlong into unconsciousness.

Tired (from "Liars Will Be Shot")

Rook’s eyes fluttered, then opened, blinking at the sunlight.  “Captain?” His voice was quiet and thick with sleep.  [Zara] quickly sank back into the chair. “Hi, Rook. I’m glad you’re awake. How do you feel?” “‘M tired.” As if to emphasize his point, the end of the word vanished into a yawn. He looked around the room, squinting slightly. “Where am I?”

Lost (from "Storm")

[Tyra] pictured Rook being tossed overboard, lost to the waves. That fucking idiot. She should have put her foot down. Being blown off course would be better than losing the captain. The crew idolized him. Besides, it would be a very anticlimactic end to the legend of Captain Rook, wouldn’t it?  She could see the text in bold print. “INFAMOUS PIRATE CAPTAIN DIES IN STORM, KILLED BY HIS OWN STUPIDITY.” Despite herself she chuckled slightly. 

Time (from "Reunion No. 2 (Burning Down)")

Hand trembling, Rook drew his rapier and pointed it in Sigmar’s direction. Sigmar stalked closer with the unhurried grace of a predator approaching a wounded animal. He tipped his blood-soaked blade in Rook’s direction. “I didn’t believe you were capable of hurting me.” Rook continued backing away. Hand and voice shaking, he replied, “The last time I pointed a blade at you, I did it because I was sure you would never hurt me.”

"What do you mean, she's not here?" Hermia asked, making sure her ears were working. Where else would Helena be? She was a homebody by nature, preferring to sit and weave or even read. It was one thing Hermia's mother brought up constantly, wishing her energetic daughter would just sit in place like Helena. "Did she go out?"

Deadringer’ footsteps echoed in the silent church. His arrival had sucked all the sound from the room, as if even the walls were holding their breath. The steady sound of his footfalls was interrupted by a horrible squelch. He stopped and looked down. He had stepped directly into Sister Celestia’s stomach.

Sigmar’s corpse is lurching towards him, somehow propelling itself on shattered limbs. All of his joints are dislocated, giving his body a freakishly elongated appearance. His shredded clothes are soaked with blood, and every inch of his skin is covered in hundreds of claw and tooth marks, all of which are weeping blood. A web of dark black veins branch out across his face, and thick black ichor drips from his mouth. It falls to the ground, splattering onto the tile with each step.

Orion leapt out of the way, seemingly equally surprised by the lack of impact. He stared up at Reverence, eyes wide. Reverence brought his arm back for another blow. As he lashed out, he saw an arm that was not his own. Large and swollen with muscle, the hand tipped in dagger-like claws.  Suddenly, he understood. Why the first blow had missed, why the world seemed so hazy. He tried to pull back, change the course of the blow, but it was too late. His fist met flesh and Orion crumpled to the ground.

Anger flared in Rook’s heart and he leapt to his feet, slamming his palms onto the table. It buckled under his touch, sending the bottle and glasses crashing to the floor. They shattered, sending glass flying, but Rook ignored it. “Don’t you dare pretend like you care about them. You never did and you’re not going to start now.” He shook his head. “It was all just a lie.” Sigmar got to his feet. “I may have lied to you, but I never lied about wanting to protect you.”

I decided to challenge myself to take these all from the same document this time. It was a fun little challenge, especially since this doc is only 5,450 words long.

“We can’t rest yet. We need to put more distance between us and those druids.” “I thought they were nice druids,” Avra had mumbled. There was a long silence, and for a moment Avra had wondered if Macha even heard her. Then, mournfully, “So did I.”

Hide. That’s right. She had promised Macha she would stay hidden.

In her current state, obscuring her tracks is impossible. The best she can hope for is the snow to at least cover the blood. But in reality, if any intelligent creature comes across her path, they’ll find her very quickly.

“Should we be worried about the fire?” Macha’s steps faltered for a moment. “What fire?”

“That’s snow.” “Can’t be. Snow’s not hot.”

“Let me try something.” Kneeling to the ground at the base of the tree where she had left Avra, she begins to clear away some of the snow, reaching down towards the dirt. Something catches her eye and she freezes. A spot of dark red, nearly black, stands out against the stark white of the snow. It’s frozen, like the rest, but she doesn’t need to touch it to know what it is. Blood. She resumes digging, more frantically now. I’m coming for you, Avra.

Eventually her body decides it has had enough. Her limbs turn to gelatin, her knees buckling beneath her as she crumples to the ground. She’s barely able to catch herself before her her face hits the trunk of the tree she had been leaning against. The impact sends a spike of pain up her wounded arm and she bites down to keep from screaming.
