That word was chosen for a reason.
It was not chosen because it accurately describes reality, not today, and not in the 1960s when this lie was pushed. It was chosen because it steals the language of the Holocaust, turns it against the Jews, and turns the Jewish state into the imaginary heir of Nazi Germany.
The Soviet anti-Zionist machine began pushing this inversion seriously after 1967: Zionism became “racism”, Israel became “colonialism”, Jewish self-defense became “fascism”, and the victims of genocide were recast as the perpetrators of it.
The goal was obvious: erase the moral meaning of the Holocaust, delegitimize Israel, and prepare the intellectual ground for another attempt to destroy the Jewish state and the Jewish people.
The new slogan is just the old Soviet garbage in modern activist language.
And like all propaganda, it survives by moving the goalpost.
At first, they said it was genocide because Israel killed “a lot of people”.
But genocide is not defined by “a lot of people died”. If it were, every major urban war would be genocide. Genocide requires intent to destroy a people as such.
Then came the inconvenient truth:
Most of the dead were combatants. Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other armed terrorists.
How many were killed because Hamas built its war machine inside civilian life - under hospitals, inside schools, beside mosques, in apartment blocks, under aid routes, and beneath children’s bedrooms?
And this is where the first version of the accusation collapses.
Because even using the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry’s inflated total death figures as the denominator - the numbers repeated by nearly every anti-Israel activist on earth - the combatant-kill figures still imply the lowest civilian-to-combatant ratio ever recorded in urban warfare.
Genocide does not produce a battlefield ratio in which a majority of those killed are actual fighters from the army that started the war.
That proves the opposite of genocide.
If Israel’s goal were extermination, the numbers would look completely different. There would be no pattern of targeting battalions, commanders, tunnel networks, rocket units, command centers, and armed cells. There would be no need to warn civilians, create evacuation routes, coordinate pauses, or fight a slow ground war that puts Israeli soldiers at risk.
A genocidal army does not spend months fighting house to house against a terrorist army embedded in civilians, in the cost of their own soldiers' lives.
It simply kills civilians.
So once the combatant numbers make the “mass killing = genocide” slogan harder to sell, they move the goalpost.
Fine, they say. Maybe Israel is not literally exterminating Palestinians. But Israel is trying to destroy Palestinian life. Israel is trying to stop Palestinian reproduction. Israel is creating “conditions of life” meant to make Palestinians disappear. Gaza is an “open-air prison”. The genocide is demographic. Biological. Slow.
Then let’s look at the demographics.
In 1967, there were roughly 1 million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza combined.
By 2023, before the current war, there were about 5.4 million.
That is the opposite of genocide. That is a fivefold population increase.
Even after the current war began, the broader Palestinian demographic picture still does not behave like a genocide. Gaza’s population slightly fell during the war, according to Palestinian statistical claims, because of deaths, missing people, but mostly due emigration. But the population still remains stable, around 5.3 to 5.5 million Palestinians - not a disappearing people, not an exterminated population, not a demographic collapse. In fact, the population still grew during the war, as attested by Sami Abu Zuhri, the head of Hamas Political Department Abroad, in March 2025.
But the accusation was not “war is terrible” and people die.
The accusation was “Israel is trying to destroy Palestinians as a people.”
If that were true, the long-term data would not look like this.
By 2022, Palestinian life expectancy was about 76.7 years - higher than Egypt, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, and almost identical to Jordan.
Palestinian infant mortality was about 12.3 per 1,000 live births - lower than Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, and Yemen.
Maternal mortality was about 17 per 100,000 births — lower than Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Yemen.
Under-5 mortality fell by more than half from 2000 to 2022.
So the “open-air prison” somehow produced better child-survival indicators than much larger Arab states.
Countries with more land. More natural resources.
More access to ports, borders, trade, oil, gas, and regional depth.
Yet the Palestinians - supposedly trapped in history’s most uniquely evil "demographic death machine" - had survival indicators that outperformed much of the region.
This is where the slogan collapses.
Because if Israel were trying to destroy Palestinian reproduction, Palestinian children would not have been surviving at better rates than children in richer, larger, independent Arab states.
If Israel were engineering demographic disappearance, the population would not have grown fivefold since 1967.
If Gaza were simply an “open-air prison” designed to erase life, it would not have had one of the region’s youngest and fastest-growing populations before Hamas turned it into a terror fortress.
And the vaccination numbers make the lie even more obscene.
During the war, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and other agencies ran mass polio vaccination campaigns in Gaza, facilitated by Israel.
The initial campaign targeted roughly 640,000 children under ten.
The country accused of exterminating Palestinian children not only facilitated pauses that allowed international agencies to vaccinate Palestinian children, but the number of children under 10 in Gaza significantly grew during the war.
The opposite of genocide.
Genocide is a blood libel, and it's why Holocaust inversion matters.
The genocide accusation was never just a legal claim. It was a psychological weapon.
After 1967, Soviet anti-Zionist propaganda worked to turn Zionism into “racism”, Israel into “colonialism”, Jewish self-defense into “fascism”, and eventually the Jews - the people who survived industrial genocide - into the new Nazis.
Not to understand the conflict.
To reverse the Holocaust.
To steal the moral language created after the murder of six million Jews and weaponize it against the Jewish state.
That inversion is now everywhere: on campuses, in activist NGOs, in media headlines, in TikTok slogans, and in the theatrical legal campaign at The Hague.
The ICJ case is not proof of genocide.
South Africa filed thousands of pages trying to convert a political slogan into a legal case, not because they have a case, but because they can put Israel and genocide in the same sentence and not be accused of antisemitism for spreading blood libels. Of course, there is no genocide, and hence no evidence of such, so South Africa asked for an unusual extension of 18 months - not because they can prove there is genocide - they can't as even the UK government already concluded, but to keep the public pretense of one, because once the evidence are shown - the case would be over.
The accusation is the point.
They do not need a verdict.
“Genocide” gives them permission to treat Israel as uniquely evil. It lets them call for the destruction of the Jewish state while pretending they are anti-fascists. It lets them erase Hamas, erase October 7, erase hostages, erase human shields, erase Palestinian population growth, erase regional health comparisons, erase combatant deaths, erase vaccination campaigns, and erase every fact that gets in the way.
If Israel fights terrorists, it is genocide.
If Israel kills terrorists at a historically low civilian-to-combatant ratio for dense urban warfare, they ignore the ratio.
If Israel warns civilians, it is ethnic cleansing.
If Israel lets aid in, it is too little.
If Israel coordinates vaccines, they ignore it.
If Palestinian numbers grow, they say Israel is still “trying”.
If Palestinian children survive at better rates than children in neighboring Arab states, they change the subject.
This is not human-rights advocacy.
It is a theology of accusation.
And the theology always ends in the same place: the Jew as the cosmic villain.
That is why this lie is so dangerous.
Because genocide is not a word for “a war I hate”.
It is not a word for “civilian casualties”.
It is not a word for “Israel exists and I resent it”.
Genocide means the intent to destroy a people.
And when the people allegedly being destroyed grew fivefold, maintained regional-leading survival indicators, produced no demographic disappearance, and had hundreds of thousands of children vaccinated during the very war supposedly meant to exterminate them, the accusation is not merely wrong.
It is Holocaust inversion.
It is a Soviet-era lie with NGO white washing, and UN stamp of approval.
It is antisemitism dressed in the language of international law.
And everyone spreading it after the numbers are shown to them belongs in one of two categories:
Those who know it is a blood libel.
And those who did not care enough to check before joining one.
